just tried to create a route using Garmin base camp for the first time. have marked all the way points and the route is now sitting there in my library. however i can't for the life of me get it to export to my device (GPSmap 62s if relevant). ive tried the send route to device button, tried exporting it to the the device and even drag an dropping it, however when i go to the device and check the route planner or track manager folder it is nowhere to be seen. please help before i throw a massive hissy fit and accompanying tears before bed time
Not using base camp, but if I add a route to my device (Garmin 510) from bike hike or a file someone's sent me, it doesn't show until I've turned it off for 10 seconds and then back on again
Worth a try?
Are you putting it into the correct folder? On my Oregon, it's in Garmin/GPX
Are you "ejecting" the GPS before unplugging the USB cable? Some applications/systems won't clear out the I/O buffer until this is done so the route hasn't actually made it to the device.
Have you tried converting the Route to a Track in Basecamp and then exporting it? (You shouldn't need to - just trying to help)
I gave up on it after a very short time, user unfriendly and buggy. This was after years ago now mind you. Garmin seem to make great hardware but useless software. I use Tracklogs for easy mapping and transfer.
OTOH, I use Basecamp all the time and it works really well.

tried the switch it off, switch back on IT support trick - no luck

yes, when trying to manually export it

yes, have to close the base camp first though before it will let me eject it

how do you do that? have tried to find a way but basecamp isn't very intuitive (or i may just be thick)

sounds like you might be the man to help then, any ideas?
If you "Open" the route on Basecamp - so that you have the pop-up box with all the waypoints listed - the Create Track button is second from the right at the bottom.
Another idea would be for you to send me a copy of the route and I'll see if I can read it. Have you tried exporting it to a file and then opening it in another program?

when i double click on the route the way point appear in a side menu underneath the library & devices menu, no pop up box, no create track button.
just to check it's not user error when creating the route, once you have dropped all the way points to where you want them is there anything you have to do after as there doesn't seem to be any 'create route' option?
Ah - you don't have a route then, just a list of waypoints 😆
There should be a menu bar including a little set of 3 green boxes. That's the Route button.
Click on that then click on the map where you want waypoints.
But have you been through any of the "How to" video?
Edit: the List of Waypoints idea is useful if, for instance, you want to create a file of locations for bothies. It's not a route though.

i thought there might be some user error in there somewhere - unfortunately the how to videos won't load
i clicked on the create new route in the first place and it opens a pop up asking for a start and finish point. i've now added the way points that i originally plotted on the map, put in the first and last way points as start and finish point and cut and paste the rest of them (so they're in order) into the next pop up box and created a track which has then been converted to a route. this will now download to the device, but when you look at the map of the the route on basecamp, it's not the nice circuit planned it's done loads of out and back diversions up tracks to the way points and back again. i'm clearly doing something wrong!
how are you meant to create routes and whats the difference between a route and a track (i thought tracks just plotted where you had been for later use as a route?)
my head hurts
thanks for the help so far guys - im usually better at this stuff, but clearly failing on basecamp
Can you do a screen shot?
Are you trying to create an off-road route? If so, it may be directing you back to the road between each waypoint because the mapping you are using doesn't recognise anything other than roads as being routable (this is a common problem with all mapping/GPS route planning programs). You need to change the Routing type to "Direct" to stop it trying to recalculate your route. It should then show straight lines between each waypoint.
FWIW, I ignore/close that pop-up with the start/end points and just click on the map with the mouse/arrow. That puts the waypoints where I want them and in the correct order.
Tracks allow you to have many more "waypoints" per "route" so you can follow a path on a map more closely.
(I should just point out that Basecamp is remarkably powerful and flexible. That bring with it a learning curve)
On the garmin you need to select 'direct' for the route type or else it tries to take you between way points using tracks / paths.
You may be able to set that up on basecamp at the start, but it's easy to change on the unit (although can't remember exactly how!!)
edit - beaten to it 🙁
ignore post up there ^^^
have just tried the videos again, worked this time - deceptively simple!
time for a beer and a lie down
EDIT - yep, is off road route and hadn't ticked direct. i think this is one to try again tomorrow! thanks for the input guys & girls
