With such a bewildering array of Garmins now available can someone recommend a replacement for my old Etrex Vista Hcx please? Think handheld for walking and bar mountable for when on the bike. I tended to use the vista for download routes from Tracklogs and vice versa. Altimeter nice just to see where we've been. On screen mapping, never used it but not to say I wouldn't now if the units have improved. Open to all suggestions from the hive?

Budget?

What's wrong with the eTrex? How do you prioritise the walking stuff vs bike functions? Do you want cadence and heart rate and other bike functions?

Either an Edge of appropriate cost, or another eTrex.

650 Oregon does both, good screen size, SSD slot for OS maps, has all the edge functions

The battery terminals are about shot on the Etrex. Not bothered about cadence and heart rate. Just being able to see where I've been on Tracklogs or Google etc. And put my own tracks on it. Ta. Budget, not really if it's the right unit £2-300 ish?

Another vote for an Oregon. I use a 600 for walking, riding and paddling

The Dakota has been dropped now, in favour of the Etrex Touch. I much prefer the larger screen of the Oregon anyway (having "upgraded" from a Dakota)

If you are happy with the size and shape of the Etrex, then just get a newer version of that. eg Etrex 20x, now available for about £140. Or Etrex 30x if you want the barometric altimeter, about £180 (though I think GPS elevation is good enough most of the time). They both come with OSM maps loaded as standard.

The Oregon is quite a bit bigger. And it has a touch screen, which may or may not be better. Plus shorter battery life.

Touch screen is very hand. Makes moving around screen etc very quick. Also handy if you need to do a go to point. The larger screens make for very easy use. Depends on your use. For example Ive used mine to cross Portugal north to south, big screen very hand when you need to make a route change to nearest village etc

Depends on your use I guess

I bought an Etrex 20x a couple of weeks ago. Very pleased with it so far on and off the bike. Decided against a touch screen so it can be used with gloves. Also I'm not sure I'd want anything bigger on a bar mount.
