Been using a several different mapping programs to build routes. Why, when I try to save a GPX file to my pc, does it only save as something readable by Adobe acrobat?
No other option is there.
When I save a TCX file of the same route it saves as TCX.
Windows 10 and, I think ,my old Windows 7 didn't do this.
Whats the actual extension that it is saving it as? The program should save it as whatever you tell it to, Win10 might be trying to suggest that Acrobat could open it.
No option to save apart from the pdf. Default is that so clicking any files should work but it doesn't .Still a pdf
From what program?
normally saves as GPX when I move them around, try using Basecamp Garmins free download
Use bikeroutetoaster or bikehike.
Sounds like your PC has a file association problem. I've no idea where in Win 10 you'd fix that but try removing Acrobat, then doing a GPX download. That should give you a suitable dialogue box to clear it.
Alternatively, and before you do that, have you tried Right-click, save as...?
Try, All Settings > System > Default Apps > Choose Default Apps by file type.
My PC did this, it's because I accidentally clicked pdf reader to open a route once and Windows 10 then associates it forever. I googled how to disassociate file types. I think it uploaded to garmin fine anyway.
Dibs and picton road have I reckon. Routes are from bike route toaster and like hike. Ta
Routes saved as a PDF won't transfer to the GPS. Strange that tcx files work
Your GPS doesn't know what to do with a PDF file. Can you post a link of where you got it? I'm just wondering if you're actually trying to upload the route description and/or map.
I'll look. Its actually a few routes. I know I click download GPX or what ever its says. It seems to automatically want to save as a pdf which is no damn good. Pre w10 it was fine. Done it many times. Off to try some of the suggestions above
Default app is Acrobat which of course is wrong. Choice offered in "choose by file type" is Acrobat, Internet explorer or look for app in the store.
I know I don't want the first. Why do I need the others? I am just trying to store the GPX,
Didn't happen in w7
Store gives me a selection of I know not what. Never even heard of a store before. Don't want to use it as it wasn't needed before
Install Garmin Basecamp. Then you can choose that.
Or, can you Right-click and do a Save As....?
Right clicking works. Why??
What is base camp?
Why do I need an intermediate program? Do I take my routes from where ever I find them then save them to base camp the transfer them?
Seems a pain, I stick with right click but don't know why its happening.
Thanks a lot peeps.
So, it works with Right-click?
Yes. Thanks for that.
I'll leave it at that I think. Its easy.
Now, how long is a piece of string?
The problem with GPX files is that they are just in a form of markup language that browsers can interpret as a "Web page". Having to Right-click in order to save them to your PC is fairly common
It's possible for Web designers to get around this with some scripting (code) but it could be your browser set-up is preventing this from running.
THe easiest way is to kind of 'bypass' the PC aspect.
Wot DrP do:
1-create route on ridewithgps in chrome
2-export route as .tcx
3-look at the downloaded .tcx ting in the bottom of chrome that's just appeared
4-drag that into the 'new files' folder in the garmin800
5-eject garmin
6-ride bike
7-have a sip of squash if thirsty, banana if hungry etc etc
Works for me 🙂
DrP
Basecamp, garmins free download route making software
Try it, it reads your OS SSD map and let's you plot tracks or trails then upload to garmin. Once you get the hang of it you won't bother with the web ones. Just my view.
Dr P . That's what I do. It works with TCX but not GPX.
Never bothered with Garmin. I only plug the GPS in if I am using a pre made route from someone else.
Did look at Garmin once. Horrid. Too much.
Works anyway now with right click.
Ta
And what the """ is a SSD map?
I am learning all sorts of stuff.
