We've just moved into out first house. With our second wee one on the way I'm keen to try and get the garden sorted out while I've still got a little time.
I'm normally quite good at having a design in my head to go with, however I'm feeling a little puzzled some of it, and was hoping some others might be able to throw some ideas into the mix.
I'd like to replace the shed and decking at the back, a like for like kind of thing, but both are past it, and with a very good sized single garage, a summer house would probably sit nicer. The garden is fairly sloped so the grass will stay as it, with the terraced borders down the side and the main border at the back by the decking remaining fairly similar to how they sit just now. The one place that I am really stuggling with is the unfinished patio behind the garage (where I've been dumping stuff while the recycling center is closed). It rarely gets the sun, so a patio doesn't really make a lot of sense to me and with its postion behind the garage window, I'm not sure it would really suit a border of any sorts.
Anyone willing to give their thoughts on any of the garden would be much appreciated. Just looking for it to be a pleasant place to be, without too much maintenance.

I'm no gardener, but going by your photographs and where the sun is hitting the house, removing the brick stairs and installing a timber raised decking at the same level as your back door, extended out to the start of the garden and to your neighbour's fence would give an ideal sitting area and play area with a great bike/toy storage below. Thereby eliminating the down and up when putting out the washing. (unless you and your wife likes Munro bagging/keeping fit).
Munro bagging like tea bagging but at altitude.

That’s because you’ve got flea’s mate 🤪
That shady flat corner has trampoline written all over it! Personally I’d be tempted to try and terrace the grass area a bit, and create at least one level area within it. Otherwise it’s green but not very useful space. Two sloping beds with a flat grass layer in between might give something better for a child to play on?
Small world. That’s my old house, sold it about 8 years ago and i think it’s had a couple of owners since then. The views from the top of the decking are cracking as you’ll know. It was a really nice house and neighbourhood. Enjoy your new home!
EDIT - if the small pond is still there then enjoy the neighbours knocking on the door returning buckets of frogs that are roaming the area.
I was going to suggest the same as macwhisky.
The current layout seems to exaggerate the sloping elevation.
Decking out from the rear door to the lawn, the void underneath can be storage although you'd have to have a careful think about things if you want it waterproof, also keeping airflow to stop it turning into a damp nightmare.
And then I was going to suggest the top deck/summerhouse could be 'dug in' to the slope rather than perched high above it, but if MrGrim says there is a great view then perhaps the extra height of the current structure is justified.
Another random idea, build the lower decking around a trampoline so the kids can jump at ground level 🙂
nice run-in from the top, down to step-up kicker onto garage roof. Nose manual to the end, 360 off
That apostrophe is seriously annoying me too, alas I can't go back and edit it now! I can only apologise.
@MrGrim, it is a very small world! The views from the decking are fantastic, I love it. We have done a fair amount of work inside already, but progress has been halted ever so slightly with the current circumstances (not that it is a priority in any way what so ever at the moment). The pond was here, and was full of frog spawn, although unfortunately it all died which was very odd. We have since removed it, I wasn't overly keen having a couple of little ones running around with it still there.
Thanks for the ideas so far, its certainly giving me something to think about. The wife is very much against a trampoline, at the moment anyway, so it won't be incorporated into any garden plans just yet.

I've not heard of that, is it like poison ivy?
If you dont go for decking over the 'pit' behind the house, you could make a cool drawbridge over to the lawn 🙂
