Now for a middleclassworld problem, I want to do some 30mm timber uprights and a hand rail for my decking (it's a raised platform and I don't want microbits plunging off the side!) but struggling to understand what timber I need. I'm pretty sure that I want it treated, and preferably planed smooth. However I can only find one or the other at the local DIY places. Any help / pointers appreciated.
If you aspire to uppermiddleclassworld then get cedar rather than pine. No treatment needed.
Edit - find your local timber merchant too, you'll save a fortune over DIY shop prices.
Have a look at in your local Travis Perkins or independent builder's merchant (ours in called Ridgeons). I'd just get some regularised (planed) pressure treated timber and use that.
I'd find a local branch of one of the bigger timber merchants rather than a general builders' merchant. I got mine from Nixon Knowles, which is part of International Timber, they may use a different trade name in your part of the country. The handrails are usually in 5' lengths, then I have a 58mm handrail top and bottom and 38mm square or turned uprights, 900mm length. Because I did mine when I did the deck itself I have 100mm square posts at 5' intervals as part of the structure, concreted in, so the top and bottom handrails are screwed to them with a neat fixing kit which hides the screws and brackets. I wanted something a bit snazzier for the post tops so bought some off ebay from USA rather than a plain timber cap. Just looking now and there are some nice ones with solar & leds this year.
