Thinking about getting some decking at the back door/garden. Area approx 4.5m x 5.5m square, with a corner clipped off. Looking for two sets of steps (probably 2 steps/treads), height is 0.5m from the ground, and around 5m of handrail and spindles.
Any estimates on how much that would cost? Or does anyone rough costs of how much decking costs per m²?
Use a local timber merchant and it'll much cheaper than a frachise builders merchant Homebase rip off prices.
Selco if there's one near you, cheapest anywhere and much thicker deck, 38mm. 6x2 and 4x2's are good quality also.
currently 1.49 per meter for 125x38mm
any idea how much joiners would charge over diy?
probably two good days work so circa 300 labour plus 3-500 materials based on the base that i built myself
Anywhere between £1550 and £2350
We were quoted £2,000 for an area half that size by a neighbour joiner.
Ended up having free relaimed paving. Patio cost £50 and a crate of beer for the labour from very kind next door neighbour and husband.
I built one 2 years ago, was 4m x 5m. Got all the stuff from my local timber merchant, and it was around the 750 pound mark iirc. Don't underestimate how much it'll cost for stuff like screws as well, if your doing it properly, ie joists every 18", it'll be about £50 for screws, and as they'll be 3-4", you'll want a proper impact driver to do them. That'll be another £100.
Takes a wee bit of looking after every year as well, and I have to say, even though I had a big enough garden in the last house, a deck of that size looked huge. I fitted balustrades most of the way round it as well, I wouldn't do that again, but my daughter was just walking at the time, and I didn't fancy her falling off the edge.
Just some things to consider.
I recently did a 70sqm job, bottom section raised 350mm, top end raised 1000mm 3 steps up, octagonal shaped with matching pergola and seating.
All done properly, no shortcuts, £3600, took 5 days
