We have a lot of flower beds bordering our garden, and as it's on 2 different heights with beds round each lawn, this means a lot of weeding. There's also quite a lot of empty space in these beds, even in summer when our flowers and shrubs.
I'm thinking of filljng the gaps with loads of perennials and some evergreen shrubs, any hints and tips on what to plant much appreciated. It's north facing but gets plenty of summer sun. Filling the beds in with soil and seeding with grass is not really an option as I'm terrible at getting the levels right.
Don't want to do bark as we did that years ago and it's not for us, and the dog eats it all!
Maybe look into some low growing juniperus shrubs.
Carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic & courgettes 🙂
What is your budget and what is the soil like? Heavy clay, well drained, sandy?
How much space do you have to fill?
Are you happy to do some gardening in the future or are you looking for something that is low maintenance?
Some plants can be fussy about location and soil. A good way of finding out what will grow well in your garden is to look at what is growing well in other people's gardens close to you.
Happy to do a bit of gardening but at the moment the lack of filler means too much soil.
Most things seem to grow OK, the soil is a bit crap, full of stones but we compost it and fork it annually. Its certainly not clay soil.
Lupines do well as do roses. Most stuff grows ok.
With regards to budget it's more a case of buying the odd thing every few weeks or so.
Most of the beds are a metre or so deep with a 4 / 5 foot fence running across the back and down one side. We have random plantings of plants we like but lacks any real structure, it's developed organically (pardon the pun).
Erigeron/ fleabane is good for filling gaps, flowers for ages and doesnt completely die in the winter.
I had more luck with plug plants than seeds, once they are esatblished they will spread.
