I am think of replacing the garage door at my home so have come to the source of all knowledge for advice.

My current door is a simple, plastic up and over door with minimal locking, this does not seen sufficient given that my most valuable equipment is in the garage rather than the much better secured house.

I wish to replace the up and over door with a roller door to free up more ceiling space for other use.

Does anyone have any recommendations, words of advice, things to look for, things to avoid etc in the world of garage doors?

As a bonus request, any recommendations for garage door companies working in the Edinburgh area would be much appreciated.

Thanks all, Dave 🙂

If you’re going with a roller and space above the door isn’t substantially limited, I’d go with fewer, thicker lats.  They’re more secure and more insulated - cheaper doors are 40-45mm and 5-7mm thick, more expensive ones are 75mm+ and 15-20mm thick.  Also make sure that whatever you’re buying has weather sealing on the sides, top and bottom.  Many of the cheap ones cut costs by removing these and it’s a real PITA to retrofit without messing up the doors movement.

Do you need a 'proper' garage door? I'm currently mulling over replacing our roller door and it's opening with a wall and a wide-ish UPVC door. Means I get more wall space in the garage which is limited currently as its effectively also our utility room. We don't don't need the width of a garage door.

Edit: likely not to happen any time soon due to a significant lack of funds 😂

If the garage door is you only access into the garage, what about a barn-style doors instead, possibly with an uneven split? (e.g. 70/30 rather than 50/50) That way when you open the door you're not putting the entire garage contents on show to the street etc.

We went from knackered/rotten barn doors to a roller shutter on ours but it rarely gets opened as we've got a side door also. If doing it again I'd probably go outwards opening barn doors with a shitload of security.

Still got our up and over, but we've got extra security. Heavy duty hasp with a shipping container lock, plus the 'hidden' shoot bolts in the bottom of the frame. To get in the garage would be incredibly noisy, and bikes are bolted to ground anchors.

When I went though this a while ago I realised I didn't need a garage door as I was never going to garage a vehicle in there. So I had a joiner build a framed wall in the gap with double doors opening out, each about 600mm wide. Its given me much more usable space in the garage including wall space for shelving on the front wall. It is warmer, more secure and was about the same price as getting a new garage door fitted.

I got a roller door fitted. I went for a narrow slat one because the space where it rolls up is smaller and a big roll would have blocked headroom. If I had the choice I would have gone for the bigger slats for the reasons mentioned at the top. My door was set into a recess so the roll had to be at the top of the opening reducing the aperture height. If I wanted the big slats I would have had to mount the door inside the garage flush against the inside wall.

Still perfectly happy with my choice on that thread linked above.
So much more convenient than the up and over door (my neighbours look on with envy whenever I stroll in the side door 😛 )
Only thing not so great is having the doors open when it's windy. Current solution is bricks for doorstops, but I'm sure something better could be done.
