any tips? shotgun? paint stripper. at the moment i'm using a heat torch and a scraper.

and what paint to use!

bike in shot is an accident, i'm not showing off i can't stand the thing...

dosent need to be all bare metal. just so it feels smooth when u run a hand across. not sure what type of paint to use. best finish on this would be out of a can tho. you could get it powder coated but you might aswell buy a new door for the expense of coating it

Timber surround on garage door is rotten, moss on the roof, brickwork needs repointing and block drive way needs attention, apart from that and having no gears on your bike the garage door looks minging and would be cheaper buying a pre finished tin door in the long run. One similar to this from b+q for £ 300 and easy to fit.

Or else buy a tin of Hammerite for £ 15

I used 'Garage Door Paint' from B&Q or HomeBase (can't remember which) a few years ago - still looks good (ie hasn't fallen off yet)...

...mind you, that was on an 'up-and-over' door rather than a roller.

Oh, hang on, that's not a roller either, is it?

wire brush in an angry grinder

the metal is probably conducting the heat away from your hot air gun too fast to melt the paint

I feel your pain having done this last year - and yes, it does take ****in' ages...
Heat gun and scraper to remove the old stuff then a coat of bare metal primer before two coats of 'garage door' paint (forget the brand), which appears to mean it's extra runny and very see through.
It still needs a third coat but the tin I got only did two and I started to lose the will to live.
If you value your sanity I'd say just buy another one too 😉

Why? If you're using a heat gun and/or chemical stripper, it can't be for environmental issues, can it?
Probably better to recycle professionally and buy a new one. 😉

You can't paint over galvanised - well you can but the paint will come off fairly quickly.

You can buy special primers for galvanised surfaces such as this stuff*

http://www.international-paints.co.uk/products/info/special_metals_primer.jsp

To remove the existing paint you can use nitromors or an own brand paint stripper. I hear good things about Wickes stuff. They are much of a muchness now the active ingredient (DCM) has been made illegal to supply for home users in Europe. You'd still have to scrape the paint off.

You could also use a heat gun but there are risks if you don't know what the paint is. If it is a chrome pigment or lead you might significantly shorten your life expectancy or brain function without the right PPE.

After you've got the old paint off an primed the door you can use whatever to paint. Hammerite or International are both probably as good as each other*

*I work for the parent company that own the International and Hammerite Brands. Views are my own and to be honest I work with 2k polyurethanes and epoxies for the industrial market so I'm no expert in garage doors- more of a bridges oilrigs and stadia man. I know more about paint than is healthy though.

In all seriousness given that the wood is fairly rotten by the looks of it and the door very old I'd buy another one. Think I paid £750 2 years ago for a powder coated roller door fully fitted.

I would save that door, just been through this myself.
Had a new lift mechanism fitted and some new wood, about £300 all in.
Door fitter told me old doors are much more solid than newer sytle doors.
I 'refurbished' mine with a quick sand so it was mooth and sound and then sprayed white hammerite on, came up a treat.
