Hi

Just bought new car,  it the gap insurance wasn’t included in the finance. So having to source it myself.

probably obvious but, do I need to insure for the total cost of finance or just the purchase value of the car?

cheers in advance

Gap covers the finance element (interest) should it be written off. You normal car insurance covers the car value. Gap fills the gap between what the insurance company pays out and what you actually owe.

We used these people when we got our car a couple of years ago...

As it was a lease car I took out return to invoice, used https://www.ala.co.uk/ previously and 10% cashback via  https://www.topcashback.co.uk/search/merchants/?s=ALA%20Insurance%20%E2%80%93%20GAP%20Insurance

ala are a good option, worth talking to them to confirm what policy meets your needs.

last time we brought a new car the first years insurance covered new for old replacement so we took replacement insurance from ala & deferred the policy start date by 12m to being covered by the car insurance policy

Be very careful. That sometimes / often won't do what you think it will do. Plus, you'll still owe the finance outstanding.

There are various types of gap / shortfall insurance policies. I used to lease cars and would buy one that paid off the remaining rentals from ala, who have already been mentioned.

You can get ones that "top up" to a replacement vehicle as well; they'll be more expensive probably.

FWIW, gap insurance pretty much always used to lose money for insurers back when I used to do it. It's good cover, but don't pay too much for it.
