Seen a few gaming thread lately so I wondered.... I've got a new pc, fancy tatting with some shoot em up's and Elite, even got my old Steam account re-activated to try and finish HL2, but as with everything its a minefield..

Got a Geforce card, so G-sync worth the extra?
IPS seems like a good thing till refresh rates are mentioned (& price)
Was thinking of a nicely spec 24" over a cheap 27", so no 4K..

Or should I stop over thinking all this, and buy the first reasonable priced 144Hz, FHD, 1ms 24", I see?

Download 'Half life 2: Update' on Steam when you get a better screen. It's HL2 re-rendered in a bit more HD. You will have to start it again, mind you...

If you're planning on a lot of competitive gaming, a fast refresh rate is useful. Can't say I've noticed that much difference for casual play.

I was thinking about a rerun at some point so will give that a shot. Still not looking forward to Nova f***ing Prospekt H block again. Or White Forest.

You'd better get on with that before HL3 comes out.

A high quality 1080 screen is probably a good shout, less strain on tje graphics card so you can run higher graphics settings. Have a look here for advice.. https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=85

Currently rockin' a temporary 27"@HD screen - iiyama E2773HDS - really nice midtones, very little colour banding and a good indication of how they handle midrange fast LCDs. Drawback is Res. and blacks aren't very dark. I just messed with the colour controls in W10 to mostly fix it, but at the expense of a couple of lost shades of extreme pale grey.

The intention is to buy a 2.5K iiyama ProLite B2783QSU, maybe look into that?

I was using a Dell 2412 IPS, it was fast enough, but the 6-bit panel really messed up darker shades, greys would have brown/green bands at certain tones etc, it just wasn't accurate enough to handle subtle colours, and even just gaming in dark corridors was sometimes like a hue-shift kaleidoscope.

What's your hardware? EG I'm on SLI 970's and 2.5K is high enough for me while keeping fast refresh rates and high post-processing options enabled.

G-Sync is suppoed to be good, but beware not all monitors offer a useful range of sync-refresh rates - paying 400 quid for G-sync monitors with a 48-75Hz range would be daft for example.

EDIT- RE HD, I am impressed how shed-loads of AA makes even HD look nice 🙂 Currently replaying Fallout 3 with 8xMSAA and it looks great. Amusingly also runs on one 970 without the fans even winding up 😀

Like the look of that Iiyama, seems a bargain compared to IPS models & even the 24" one I've been looking at (eg: Asus VG248qe).
Hardware, i5 6600k with a 2nd hand 970 to get me going, rather than shell out for a 480 or 1060 as a 'starter' option & then upgrade.
Good heads up on the G-Sync.
