OH has had recent problems with gaming laptop - it wouldn't start or charge up so she took it to get fixed. When he rang to say it was fixed, come get it, he said he'd replaced the power supply. When she went to get it he said it only works if you keep it plugged in, that it wasn't worth it to replace the battery, he showed that it now works and she accepted it.
She didn't have time to use it much for some weeks after. And when she did, the fan was very noisy almost immediately, even without playing any games. And with playing a game, the laptop just shutdown after 10 minutes.
Then it wouldn't start again.
She got the idea to try again without a mouse plugged in, and it worked, the fan wasn't working hard immediately on switching it on, and the game played no problem.
She decided to try using a wired mouse instead of the Bluetooth one, but the problems returned. Whichever USB slot she plugs the mouse into just sends the fan into overdrive.
She'd really like to be able to use a mouse though as she really doesn't get on with the trackpad.
She asked the man at the shop again, at first he said it's not worth fixing, then he was talking about the USB something needing replacing. saying he couldn't give a quote even a rough one, that he needed to look at it again.
it's an Asus Zephyrus M GM501G. i7 256 SSD plus 1tb hdd 16gb ram.
Any thoughts on what would be best to do? Thanks
Are there any component in device manager that are not installed correctly?
Very weird, I'd be simply tempted to reimage the device with a fresh copy of W10, confirm all the required device are installed correctly, and see if the fault persists.
Thanks - it's running W11 - would the same thinking still apply?
same difference

I've had a similar problem to this (including the battery fault*) and it was caused by something getting knocked out of place when I dropped it at some point.
So if after reformatting the problem still occurs, then I would disassemble it and just check that all the little peripheral port boards (USB ports, mic/headphone board, etc) are connected properly to the motherboard. All I did was plug and unplug the connections and check the little boards were solidly mounted and not loose and it fixed it.
(* I believe it was something shorting and gradually draining the battery)
Before you take it to bits or rebuild it, have you tried a different wired mouse?
Edit - ignore that, I missed that you were using a Bluetooth mouse initially.
Given that appears to be a laptop worth around 500 quid, I’d question it not being worth it to replace the battery when a battery is £45 from Amazon…

Either your man didn’t know what he was doing (which is likely from the subsequent issues) or he didn’t want to do the job. I’d find a new computer repairer.
