Im not into gaming, but my daughter has sort of asked for a gaming platform (PS or xBox) so she can drive F1 games. No we think that this is going to be a short term fad, and we are not going to get her this years PS5 or whatever for £600. So, what's the best platform from yesterday, PS4, or Xbox? On FB you can get either for around £150 still with box etc, then add game and wheel etc for another £100 or so. Is getting second hand gaming stuff a stupid idea or are they robust?
I prefer PS4. The controllers are recharagble without additional packs, are smaller so better for kids hands, are lighter to use, etc. the PS4 is also quieter in operation than the XBOX one X we have.
Both of ours have been very robust despite use by 4 family members from 4-40 years old.
Hoses for courses in terms of performance between the two. The later models (e.g PS4 pro) are better.
They're fairly robust so I'd buy second hand so long as you can see it in use before you buy - ask them to plug into their tv and show you it playing a game or two.
Also worth checking if there's an exclusive games you want, xbox has the forza series of racing games and playstation Gran Turismo.
Echo above, PS4 or Xbox One X are the best of the previous generation. Either can be had for £250 ish from Game or CEX so you get a certain amount of warranty for second hand.
As Enigmas said above, it's more down to the exclusive titles for each that will drive which one to buy. If you do go to an actual real shop to have a look at the machines, they tend to have a large selection of second hand games as well so its worth having a browse of those. i'm currently PS4 bound, but am thinking of changing to Xbox purely for the racing games.
Have a look at the Xbox series S. it’s a digital only machine but it is next gen without the big price tag and have been available. It’s alway wise to ask what platform they are interested in too
Vanilla PS4 is still a good platform.
This partly depends on what TV you are intending to use. If you going with 1080p TV (not 4k) then I would skip last generation at this point and get an Xbox series S with gamepass. Gamepass is a monthly subscription, that includes F1 I think, and the awesome Forza horizon games. It lets you try many different games, if you decide you only play one or two, ditch the sub and buy the games.
All of the that. ☝
There's precious little difference between the PS4 and Eggsbox for most practical purposes, despite what fanboys would have you believe. Both have platform exclusives (the Forza Horizon series is amazing but I don't doubt that the PS has similar stunners) so as enigmas says, that might be a factor if there's something specific she wants to play.
What I would add though is, what (if anything) do her mates have? Being on the "other" platform will make her a bit of a pariah. So long as you stay away from the great unwashed in public games, playing online with your friends is the bomb.
ditch the sub and buy the games.
There's a lengthy couple of threads elsewhere but Game Pass Ultimate can be had for ~£120 for three years. If you're considering buying more than one full-price game per year then Game Pass Ultimate is better value. I don't know what Sony are offering but Game Pass is astonishingly good.
Both PS4 and XBox One very good. Daughter has both and a gaming PC. She bought the Xbox second hand which was mint. PS4 was bought by us a few years back.
PC gaming is very expensive.
came on to say the same thing as @Cougar, find out what her mates play on and get that.
There may be a best choice (for her), but I don’t think there’s a bad choice. You might consider what games you and her would enjoy playing together. My youngest daughter isn’t one for spending a lot of one-on-one time together with me, other than when we game together. We have spent many an hour sitting beside each other, two consoles with two tvs playing Cod. Special times. Especially since she moved away from home. Just be prepared for her being better than you 😀
we are trying to get her to discuss with her friends, so that the platform is similar. I expect that her expectations (full F1, virtual simulator) against what is available may be an issue...
On the wheel front, have you considered where to put it? I always found them a complete pain to use clamped to a table with the pedals on a carpet, ymmv, but consider a second hand folding seat as well, as then it'll hopefully be quick to set up and consistent in postion so she can git really gud.
I'll not post pics of the aluminium extrusion monstrosity that me da is currently building for me to future proof housing my sim kit.
Another +1 for having somewhere 'proper' to put a wheel and pedals (and shifter?). My OH made a small wedge shaped cockpit frame sort of thing from some offcuts he had from something else that I could plonk in front of the telly, the pedals (brake and throttle) butted up against the telly stand and the wheel clamped on top of the framework. It was pretty cool razzing round the Nürburgring in Forza Motorsport 4 (x360) in ridiculous cars. Get a decent force feedback wheel though, cheap sprung wheels are shit and suck the joy out of the games.
I've got no idea about PS4 stuff but a lot of Forza games are backwards compatible on the XBone and they tend to have lower barriers to entry (most of the fun cars available from the start, no license tests etc.)
Another vote for the Series S, I don't think it's possible to get more 'bang for your buck' at the moment. The PS has some better fundamentals like rechargeable controllers and ability to upgrade internal storage yourself.
I think F1 2020 is on Game Pass at the moment.
I don't really buy into the "rechargeable controllers" argument. I've been running Xbox controllers off rechargeable AAs since the Xbox 360 days. If the batteries die I can replace for pence them rather than needing a new controller.
I had a logitech G920 with the shifter for a bit over lockdown and it was great fun. Only sold to fund bike related projects 🙂
I would recommend it if you can find a lightely used example.
