Can someone tell me why I should get an Xbox one s over an Xbox one, why I need 500gb or 1 Tb of storage for a console when the games are on disc, are they easy to make safe (control online access) and will my son ever want to do anything else if we get one?
I have an XBox One with 500Gb. Each game copies itself (or at least A LOT of data) to the local disk. I only play a few different games and my disk is 90% full.
I wouldn't mind if they loaded quickly but Forza Horizon can take ages sometimes... 👿
You need storage because the games aren't played from the disc. When you first get a game you put the disc in and it copies all the data to the hard-drive.
The disc still needs to be in the machine when the game is played though (mainly as a copyright precaution, so you don't just install the game and sell the disc).
An external hard drive can be plugged in though if you need extra storage.
Get the X Box One S - because it's a bit better, a bit smaller and costs no more.
Also the games often need a large download in addition to the content on the disc.
A game can take 50 to 100GB to fully install.
You need the 1TB version!
What they said.

^This too!
Don't expect to stick a disc in and be playing within a few minutes. Some games can take hours to download updates event with a reasonable broadband connection.
Ok. Sounds like things have moved on a bit from my old N64.

Found you the perfect system...
As I understand it the game discs are pretty much obsolete these days.
Buy games online and you don't need discs at all. Buy a physical game disc in a shop and all it does is go download the rest of the game anyway, which will inevitably have been updated since the disc was pressed.

Buy the disc and you can take advantage of offers in shops, rather than hoping for deals on whichever mfrs portal. Also means you can sell the game on if you don't like it/finish it, assuming there's no unique dlc code in with it.
All of this download / copy game from disc / get updates malarky means don't buy one as a present for a kid without prepping it first in order to avoid massive disappoint. Obviously more relevant at xmas when you're stuck in the house.
Yep, was really glad I set up the XB1 a couple of days before Xmas with FIFA17 which took most of a day to download. A neighbour's son had to wait until boxing day to play...

SNES Classic is now sold out after about 2 days. 😥
