You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm under the knife on Tuesday and then preparing for between a month and 3 months of doing remarkably little apart from my physio. Setting up a man cave in the spare room for minimum crutch action (in both sense of the word!) and dragged a smart telly in from my work flat along with ubiquitous coffee machine etc. I have a stack of books to get through and access to amazon prime/netflix and eurosport (but no live terrestrial telly as no ariel and no sky).
But my thinking went - box sets could be good.... but I need a dvd or blueray player for that.....but if I'm buying a blueray player I could just as well buy a games console. I've never owned or wanted to own a games console before and whenever I've seen one being played its been either fifa or halo/call of duty type games. I don't have the remotest interest in either genre. Is there any point then? Is there much else I might be interested in? Forza style racing could appeal, do they do strategy games on consoles or air simulators? I hear console gaming is for more that pubescent boys and dysfunctional men these days but I don't know where to start looking for good alternative 'gaming' to death/maim/kill or football.
Then again I might just play a load of online chess on my laptop.
Thanks
It appears you don't want one. I'd buy something else.
Why are you even asking this, you obviously don't want one.
Are you just trying to highlight your intellectual and cultural superiority? 🙂
you obviously don't want one.
I didn't think I didn't; or at the very least I thought there might be more to them than the above genres that I was already aware of. It appears from the two posts so far that I was wrong.
Buy a PS4 and GTAV, Minecraft, Witcher.
Play GTAv as a crime sim and concentrate on Heists & Team events, freemode Minecraft & learn to use circuits & Witcher for the story.
Should kill a few hours
I'm no FPS fan. There are many great third-person games though: the rebooted Tomb Raider games are sublime; Assassin's Creed Syndicate is incredible; go back to the Xbox 360 generation and Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games I've ever played.
There's driving games aplenty. Forza 6 if you want a modern Gran Turismo-esqu simulation or Horizon if you want something a bit more arcadey.
Loads of puzzlers, platformers, adventure games. If you want something a little leftfield, Life Is Strange is just sublime.
Yours, a dysfunctional man.
Just get the witcher 3 wild hunt. I'm 38 hours in and I feel like I'm just getting started.
Awesome game, the sheer amount of work that must have gone into it is insane.
Not usually a huge RPG man either.
Get a Wii if you want fun games, and not just the usual shooting stuff. Loads of interesting puzzle and adventure games etc. Wii Fit is good if you want a bit of exercise.
I'll happily shoot you in the face for 3 months on GTA V online if you like? Can't say fairer than that

I am not a complete casual, sunk 100+hrs into Bloodborne, but Witcher just seems so overwhelming to me.

*Wipes a tear*
Some people are so kind when needed.
It's not true altruism but happy to help.
PS4 + Little Big Planet.
Winner.
You can get box sets via prime and netflix, so that's that sorted without any need for a console.
There's no point spending 250 quid plus on a console unless you know you want to play stuff.
Why not get a reasonable PC? - loads more choice and disposability in terms of games via Steam etc.
But then, what do I know, I'm still shooting people in the face in Borderlands.
Shooting people in GTA V is too easy. Smashing into them at full speed with a car or helicopter is where it's at. Jumping off a roof into the Rota blades has some great rag doll effects.
PS2 + Downhill Domination.
Sorted.
To reinforce the PC idea, Day if the Tentacle has been remastered and is due (if not ready) for re-release. Also, Fallout 3 full pack is a fiver on Greenmangaming.
Oh and a lot of the old command and conquer games are now free to download.
Or you could try emulators, for even more old games. If you want something connected to your TV, maybe a Raspberry Pi running PiPlay or RetroPie.
Command and Conquer Generals on PC keeps me amused for a while. Also can play online.
Xbox has a game store with some puzzle style games in. Try Portal series?
Minecraft is actually very addictive. I got really into it creating a crazy house with secret tunnels and hatch doors. And making things to harvest supplies from zombies and skeletons is quite satisfying!
Borderlands is indeed good for face shooting
Thanks for the responses so far.
I've swayed throughout the day from just using my 2010 macbook pro (too old for airplay but good enough spec to run plenty of stuff still) attached via a cable to the telly for DVD playing and some light gaming to buying an xbox one. I've read the xbox will shortly be getting an upgrade so that it can work as a freeview PVR and as we will be moving in the summer and will need to start again with our TV and so on (old plasma that won't work in the new space and freesat pvr that I couldn't use a dish with) it could act as our do-it-all media box that also plays the odd (non shooting in the face) game. Maybe.

It's been out for a week or so now.
Dunno if / how you define running-jumping-standing still games but my go-tos on consoles have always been the Uncharted series. Those and GTA and Tiger Woods Golf would do me for months
If you'd like to try really good, console style. faff free games, you could do a lot worse that a New 3DS XL.
Lots of brilliantly designed, classic, non shooty games.
Zelda and Professor Layton will keep you going for ages, among countless others.
Games shops full of classic games for a few quid.
Avoid the older model being sold off cheap, the 3D is poor.
They really are a nice thing to use, specific for purpose, like a Kindle.
I've got the 2DS XL, but having tried the son in law's new one I'll trade in soon.
do you like space trading/shooting/exploring?
did you like elite as a kid?
well you could get yourself an xbox one/pc and download elite dangerous.
it's blinking awesome (i have the xbox version)
seriously it's gaming crack 😀 have played nothing else since i downloaded it 3 weeks ago.
forgot to mention that the map is a full size 1:1 scale of our milky way. over 400 billion stars. should keep you busy for a while 😉
did you like elite as a kid?
Well, yes I did. And The sentinel which had a few similarities from memory (lots of trigonometry maths to find the next location quickly - I was such a geek child).
Good shout.
if you decide to get an xbox one and elite my gamertag is adamski2112 atm i'm addicted to deep space exploration/scanning systems. am currently just over 5000 ly from sol and heading towards Sagittarius a. only 21,000 ly to go 😆
running-jumping-standing still
Oop! Found you!
I've got a PS4, XBox One and a Wii U, and I'm neither a boy or a man! 😆 I also hate FIFA (hate football in general), not fussed by Call of Duty, and think that the Halo games are massively overrated.
There's not much in the way of strategy games on consoles, mainly because the controllers aren't ideal for it (although a purist may suggest the same goes for FPSes ;)). There's plenty of variety though - PS4 has stuff like Until Dawn and The Last of Us, Xbox has Forza, and both have big budget action/adventure/RPGs (Fallout 4, etc). Wii U has some amazing games, although some (stupid) people find the cutesy wrapping on then off-putting (Mario Kart, Splatoon, etc). The PS4 and Xbone have a good range of downloadable indie titles too, that tend to be a bit more original than a lot of the big AAA offerings. Both consoles make pretty decent media players with access to streaming services, and both have BluRay players.
However, as people have said, PC may offer more of what you're after - RTSes, MOBAs, RPGs/MMORPGs/puzzlers, huge, huge amount of indie games, etc. Not quite as comfy as sitting on the sofa with a controller in hand though!
You could also consider a 3DS with stuff like Professor Layton and the Phoenix Wright games (which are amazing). No media capabilities, but you could probably pick up a load of games and the console dead cheap.
