My Fortnite addicted son currently has his X-Box connected up to the family TV (only one in house).
He's wants the X-Box One S in his room & so needs a screen.
So, TV or monitor / other?
My brief Google says a monitor is quicker & better quality over a TV (he doesn't really watch TV programmes), we'll be looking at the budget end of the scale, apparently 24" is the size to go for if he's sitting directly in front of it, 27" if its mounted further away.
I've seen this that looks OK to by uneducated gaming eye:
Any tips or advice or input gratefully accepted.
Ta 👍
Monitor will be cheaper and perform better. Look for a low response speed - smaller number the faster.
TBH most are darn good - my lad has 1 x 27" and 2 x 24" for his gaming PC (wrap around vision) and he's sat 2-3 foot away. His are HANNS.G monitors.
Sorry, can't get your link to work
It's probably not worth going mad Xbox One S tops out at 60fps and most games run at 30.
Most monitors don't have speakers, but some have audio output to connect PC speakers too, you can get great sounding speakers for not much money. The controller does have a headphone socket which I always thought was cool.
This looks okay
As you already probably know, you can stream TV through Xbox box too.
Also the one s supports higher resolution resolution so the 1080p one you listed is a bit low.
Id get something like this:
If he moans tell him he is a "defaulty noskin bot" and he should "just build" and "git gud" 🙂
(I may spend too much time on the Fortnite subreddit)
Realistically his network ping time has a far far greater impact than the monitor response speed ever will.
Most modern monitors will have a response time of 5ms or less. Competing against someone with a 4ms response time makes little odd. But if your ping is 200ms and theirs is 40ms then you are at a disadvantage.
Or this is better - 1440p and it has an IPS screen rather than TN.
Apart from 4ms, is there any real world difference between a monitor with 1ms versus one with 5ms response time?

Er, no it doesn't, it supports HDR which is something completely different. The One X is the 4K version.
I have an old Asus VE248H, 24" is fine for sitting in front of, a bit bigger (27"?) if it's at the end of the bed. HDMI, 60Hz and HDR are all you really need, spending more money on useless features (most are for consoles) is just daft.
i wouldn't want to go back to anything smaller than my current 32" monitor for gaming and thats sat 2/3 foot away.
The one s will upscale to 1440 or 4k.
Not sure how it looks as up scaling can be a bit Meh. but IPS panels do look better than TN panels.. Comparing the same resolutions.
And it's more future proof should you want to repurpose the screen in future.
There's not much point buying a TN 1080 HD panel these days given that the equivalent IPS 1440 is not much more expensive..
any s/h 32" hd tv off gumtree
stop overthinking it

For console gaming I'd say no... There's too much latency between a control pad input and a resulting affect on the screen..
For cutting edge pc shooters it can make a slight difference, using wired mouse and keyboard. But anything under 5ms is fine really.

Absolutely not which means you'll have a TV not just a monitor.
Huh, seems I was wrong on that one. Apologies, I'll get my coat...

Not wrong as such.. The xbox isn't really capable of resolutions over 1080. Not at a good frame rate anyway. It just doesn't have the graphical horsepower.
It can upscale though to 1440 or further by stretching the picture..
I badly made my point.. IPS LED monitors look nicer than TN monitors, and the higher resolution capability of a 1440 for a few quid more would be a better long term purchase.
Son has two Benq GL2450 Nothing special, but no complaints and runs well with his new powerful gaming PC
Aye but I wasnt aware it upscaled at all, complete news to me. Not that it makes any difference with my setup anyway!
Good point on IPS monitors, they do make a difference.
I don't use a console but assuming the One S is the version that can do 4K gaming you'd be mad to get anything other than a 4K TV (and 40"+). I have a fancy gaming monitor for my PC setup but it's a waste of money for console gaming, you don't need anything that can do over 60Hz and 5ms response time is fine. I don't get why people are linking 1440p or 1080p monitors?
Might be worth googling around for best budget 4K TV for gaming (I know Samsung's used to be rated quote highly for gaming, that was a few years back though) but I'd have though anything around £500 would be fine.
4K gaming monitor is going to be very expensive. Buy a TV with 4K/HDR with a low input lag time. I use a Samsung 40" cheap 4K/HDR TV for gaming (FPS & Driving) and PC work. When he upgrades the console, the TV will be able to show the higher resolution 4/HDR image.
As someone else above has said, being on a wired network connection rather than WiFi will make a much bigger difference than any TV/Monitor ever will.
I’d have though anything around £500 would be fine.
[scrooge] I'm thinking more around the £150 - £200 mark, brand new! [/scrooge]
Thanks for all the input & opinions, keep em coming. Ta
Fuzzy, one S is the native 1080 one hence recommending 1080 monitors (or 1440 with upscaling) since the brief was for a monitor. X is the 4k version.
