You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Warning - middling aged dad rantette here!
I understand the need to athletes to take on board fuel (i.e. energy/calories in it's purest sense) during hard physical activity...
But... "Gamer effin' supplements...".. what!
My son (10) was going on about G-fuel and Sneak yesterday, asking if he could try them, or get some... Clearly the advertising has gotten t him as he was saying "it's a good alternative to water, which i don't really like, so would ensure i drink plenty"!
To me, these come under the same camp as red bull and monster..yeah, these all claim to be sugar free, but I hate the fact they all advertise themselves as "giving you energy" when they are simply caffeine/stimulant drinks!!
We're creating a world whereby the overweight, tired, barely see the light of day, bags0under-eyes teens are propping up their awful lifestyles with ruddy energy drinks perfectly aimed at the Xbox addicted population!!!!!
Anyone else worry about the cohort of, frankly, terrible drinks our kids are exposed to??
Honestly, I'd probably prefer he try the odd drag off a fag, than get into these devils in a can 😀
DrP
Yeah - the cans are basically the same as Monster and the powders are more like Bodybuilding Pre-Workout.
I would not let my kids anywhere near either of those things having consumed both.
Just get him a bag of speed & do it old school* 😵
*this is a joke by the way!
Those Victory Royales don't just happen by themselves you know.
This thread is making me thirsty

As a gamer I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.

athletes to take on board fuel
What. Like eatin and drinkin? Like the rest of the population 😎
If you're gonna do a ten hour gaming marathon doesn't it make sense that you manage your nutrition appropriately and with minimal fuss? It wouldn't be a marathon if you could pop out for a Big Mac / quinoa salad in the middle.
However looking at the target audience and the likely vendors I too would be exercising caution... Ultimately, anyone prepared to let their kids play games endlessly is unlikely to GAF about health and nutrition...
Pickle Rick Miracle Seltzer is what he needs.

Ultimately, anyone prepared to let their kids play games endlessly is unlikely to GAF about health and nutrition…
Tru that!!

I guess I mean; I appreciate that often I will mix up powdered energy drinks in a bottle, when racing my bike, so I could come across hypocritical!!
DrP
**** me, I had no idea.
Makes sense from a marketing point of view I suspect, and people can and do become pro-gamers.
Seems silly though.
Reminds me of this stuff from the 90’s.

Was all the rage for a year or so in clubs and the amount of caffeine certainly did the trick if I remember right.
They should be watching mountain bikers drinking water from Red Bull cans wearing Red Bull helmets on Red Bull TV.
Surely it should be this:

Was all the rage for a year or so in clubs and the amount of caffeine certainly did the trick if I remember right.
aye, was deffo the caffeine.......
YouTube and the power of influencers innit. Finleybgoode is always on at me to get him some of this crap and I just refuse. But just watch any of the gamers on YouTube and they are often sponsored by the various brands. It's even extending out to other stuff - I watch some drone film makers and the like and even some of them are now pushing these as they need to stay awake for long hours to produce the footage. all utter bollocks...
Oof, 300mg of caffeine in a can. A strong coffee is about 100.
Maybe ask him why he wants it? I'd guess it's as simple as "I want to be a better gamer" in which case, well, this crap won't do that. Could be a learning opportunity for you, teach him not to believe everything that adverts tell him.
If it's because he's feeling a bit sleepy after gaming for 12 hours straight then I'd suggest that the problem there isn't a lack of energy drinks.
Maybe ask him why he wants it?
So that, despite being 10, he can have the reflexes of an 8 year old.
😀
He wants it cos he's seen an advert/youtuber!!
We BOTH play Xbox...but we're no gamers (in the e sports sense!!)...
It's just a gimmick he wanted because he's seen a cool advert for it!
DrP
EDIT - I told him... go to med school, run your own practice, and THEN you can waste your money on all the cr@p you see advertised on STW/you tube 😀
...and natty waistcoats.
It’s just a gimmick he wanted because he’s seen a cool advert for it!
When we grew up we were subjected to Coke, 7Up, Fanta and who could forget Tango adverts. Time has moved on as have products and marketing approaches, but the basic premise remains the same, evil parents will deny (protect their kids from crap) and half-butted ones won't. Advertisers will continue to target the easily influenced.
A guy at work has tried Sneak, he has a wall of Monster in the office which he still has to go into as a SysAdmin. It's not good for him, but he's an adult so no one stops him.
Capitalism innit? There's a market that's not being tapped, so you go after it.
I've got quite into playing COD online during lockdown and TBF caffeine does seem improve how sharp you are, I tend to take mine in 'Mug of well brewed Yorkshire Gold' form though, good enough for a few Warzone Solo wins last week.
Giving the amount of caffeine that those powers have in them to a 10 year old though?
No way!
Tell him to stick the kettle on.
My marathon gaming sessions are fuelled appropriately:
Biggest, cheapest pizza from any local place (with all the meats)
a few cans of ale
a bottle of scotch
BITD when I was less middle aged it would have been cigarettes, weed, Coca-Cola and a concerted effort to beat Resident Evil in 1 sitting
(current marathon sessions last about 3 hours before I flake, in my other example it would have been work until 5, drink and dance until 2am, game until I had to go to work again, hoping to grab an hours kip on the train, the joys of youth!)
As part of an honest to goodness actual STW online gaming squadron I can confirm that we are more likely to be fuelled by artisanal coffee, lovingly curated and prepared using a very expensive machine.
We need it to wash down all the Greggs sausage rolls.
Better than that, have you seen the Garmin Instinct Gamer edition?

https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/761998
does that watch tell you when to eat, drink, pi$$ and $hit???!
Didn't some chat in China die from kidney failure/dehydration during a major gaming session??
