Root's 0 runs from the first 25 balls... finally he gets some! Whew.
1:1 in the silly review scores
That was a good review, though not in the sense of 'avoiding/overturning the howler' I'd agree
That was a good review,
No it wasn't, because:
'avoiding/overturning the howler'
is what they're for. Clarke's just wasted one of two chances he has to do so in what is an immensely important innings
Seeya later Trott 😀
Are you all praying for rain then?
To be honest, I'm hoping KP gives the innings some direction and runs start to accumulate. England are feeling the pressure alright, but this overly defensive posture just invites more pressure to be heaped on.
Are you all praying for rain then?
No, we're 2-0 up in the series. If Australia pull this one out of the hat then good on them, they still have to win the next two, which as weather is bound to come into it again, is doubtful. We've consistently been not good enough in this particular test. If I'm honest, we've hardly been brilliant as a collective unit the entire series, but we'll still probably retain the ashes from the current position
[Benaud] It's twchoo for twenty twchoo...[Benaud]
Edit: Bugger, dropped catch! Should've been [Benaud]three for twenty twchoo! [Benaud]
You've just dropped the ashes?
Hmmm, interesting.
This from the BBC...
Chris Williams, via text on 81111: Am I the only England who wants Australia to win today? Given that a satisfying 5-0 whitewash is off the cards, I want a really exciting series with the trophy being decided on the final day of the fifth test.
I am now convinced that Brits have defective sporting brains. 😯
Would the Aussies feel the same? Or the S. Africans? Nope. Win first, play well and that's a bonus, isn't that the way it should be done?
* despairs *
Do not overturn you bastard!!
Edit: You bloody bewdy!!
Is KP out?
Yup. 🙁
yup
Did he hit it, though?
All this review guff isn't really helping is it? No definite touch, no hotspot, and yet he's still given out? WTF?
Ahem:

**** YOU ICC, DRS AND ERASMUS.... ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT... night all, not going to stay up further to discuss this one, have fun.[SNIP]

The umps are balancing this out aren't they?
Quite funny really.
Do not overturn you bastard!!

So is the DRS system broken?
That was out, definite nick even without hotspot evidence
yossarian +1
karma works in weird and mysterious ways!!!! At the moment, thru poor umpiring/technology!!
That was out, definite nick even without hotspot evidence
In that there was no evidence presented and it didn't deviate from its direction?
I reckon the only point of the review is to clarify the unclear. How many reviews in this series have really done that?
psychie, he might have been out... zokes, he might not have been out - damn my inability to procure live visuals. 👿
The aussie commentators seem to be agreeing with me, and given how partisan they usually are, I think it's pretty clear...
Alright, the boot is truly on the other foot at the moment, but DRS has been about for a while. Has it ever been this controversial in other series?
I reckon the only point of the review is to clarify the unclear. How many reviews in this series have really done that?
None mainly and there have been more howlers with the DRS than from the Umps alone
@Zokes - not that I am aware of and it is in danger of dragging itself into disrepute
TBH - the 49.9999999% bowl for example we knew it had hit and it would take the bails off but we had to go with the umps decision which we knew it was wrong because it was not wrong enough
this seems to be the problem it doe snot go to them to decide it goes to them to decide if they have enough to scream a howler not go - erm you were probably wrong mate
Yea I know the on field ump technically decides
DRS shouldn't be controversial at all, right? It should convert uncertainties into definite yes/no decisions that are transparently correct. I can't work out how come there's still so much uncertainty... and I'm not biased here because KP might have just been stiffed by the man... honest.
Nothing to do with DRS or karma for KP.. Umpire gave it out in live play, Snicko shows it looks like a great live call.
@Zokes - not that I am aware of
This is it. I've been watching and listening to pretty much every England series for the past 10 years. I know DRS hasn't been around for that long, but this really is the first time there's been so much controversy.
The aussie commentators seem to be agreeing with me, and given how partisan they usually are, I think it's pretty clear...
This, when the locals are laughing about getting a free one then it wasn't out.
Mind you, that dirty stinking cheat Brett Lee just admitted that he knew he was out LBW twice in the last Old Trafford test and he didn't walk!
Cheating dirty Aussies 😆
What commentators are you listening to?? Vaughn just reckoned he was out, there was a definite noise and even a slight change in the seam movement as it passed the edge, no doubt in my mind he edged it (and I wouldn't have been too angry if an Aussie had been given out similarly)... Fair call from the on-field umpire with no (or not enough) evidence for the DRS system to overturn (though wouldn't have been surprised to see it happen, would've been a fair chance of a broken telly in my place if it had!)
Bugger, looks like it's raining, damn 🙁
Brett lee and the 2 fat ones who were not allowed to go over.
So how much do we think KP will be fined for that outburst eh?
Woohoo, game back on, for a bit at least.. C'mon Aussies! 😀
So how much do we think KP will be fined for that outburst eh?
Probably less than Punter's records
Spank 'em around the park for 10 overs or so, boys, and we'll knock the stuffing out of 'em!
What was KP's outburst, then?
Was it 'I never nicked it, honest guv', 'the umpires wouldn't know an Edge from a U2 axeman' or something actually serious?
That didn't last long ha ha 😆 👿
Was it 'I never nicked it, honest guv', 'the umpires wouldn't know their an edge from a U2 axeman' or something actually serious?
He was swearing like a trooper as he walked off, could (should?) be construed as dissent perhaps...
Ahh.
Any worse than Clarke's bleating last night, though? 😀
Didn't see Clarke, but he does get a bit more leeway as the Captain...
Anyhoo, think I'll go to bed and catch the highlights in the morning, going to be a frustrating day I suspect, fingers crossed we get enough play to have a good shot at these remaining wickets. C'mon Aussies! 😀
Didn't see Clarke, but he does get a bit more leeway as the Captain...
Pour quoi?
Because a Captain has more * ing authority, zokes, that's why. Keep the * up! 😀
This'll get rained into a draw, no question.
Because a Captain has more * ing authority, zokes, that's why. Keep the * up!
Are you Ricky ponting in disguise?
8) 😆
From Rain Today - and the wet stuff is steadily moving NE. Not looking like a lot more play for a while.
So am I right in thinking that when Mother Nature wins the day it will mean that we have RETAINED THE ASHES ALREADY?
That's THREE SERIES IN A ROW
and FOUR OUT OF THE LAST FIVE.
Goodness me, that's a little one sided isn't it?
Yup. A draw today retains the ashes.
Lots of folk on the BBC website are bleating about it, wishing the Aussies would win today, so we can win the series in fine style, with fine swashbuckling stroke play... I doubt the Aussie supporters would be saying the same if they were in England's position.
I doubt the Aussie supporters would be saying the same if they were in England's position.
I know the media wouldn't be, hence their vitriol at being 'cheated' this morning
But thankfully most of my mates here are actually more interested in the game than just winning. Which, come to think of it is probably a good thing, given their results over the past few years 😆
Gary Neville on TMS is saying he wishes the Aussies were 'narky' like they used to be. It would certainly make it more enjoyable beating them - they're a bit too nice these days. Even Warner seems quite affable.
Even Warner seems quite affable.
Well, he's an exceptional socks ambassador...
There's lovely for you. 🙂
Staying where they belong
For the next couple of years at least
Get in!
Australia could not have done much more really apart from declaring a bit earlier y'day with hindsight. England always behind, but with the forecast known well in advance, only batted 5 overs less than Australia in the first innings, thus taking plenty of time out of the game.
Staying where they belong for what, a few months possibly until the rematch. Just wondering if KP's body will make it that far or retire earlier 😕
Well done England - third time in a row innit?
Well, he's an exceptional socks ambassador...
Not quite as good as the Qantas air safety video - can't embed on my phone for some reason:
what's that Skippy?
the sound of the biggest whinge in ashes history.
suck it up bogans.
Yes, yes, but, but..... the DRS, and the umpires, and the rain, and Broad not walking (even though none of us do), and the time-wasting, and they're all South African anyway, and we don't even like test cricket any more, WAHHHHHHHH!
Not quite as good as the Qantas air safety video - can't embed on my phone for some reason:
Oh mother of god no! That was almost enough to make me change to Virgin for frequent flyer business travel. That said, it became more amusing the worse the season went for them!
And after yesterday's outburst on the news about it being everyone else's fault (especially Stewart Broad), it would seem, given the 10 seconds of coverage that it was given, that the locals never really liked cricket any way. 🙄
😆 😆 😆
The latest from Australia: "This Ashes series doesn't matter, it's the one in Australia that does"
Oh. Dear.
The latest from Australia: "This Ashes series doesn't matter, it's the one in Australia that does"
Oh. Dear.
It's been so bad they called an election just to avoid talking about it.
Some great bogan comments on the Sidney morning herald cricket pages
Australia lost the series because of the mangled DRS system, umpires, rain and Root. Root caused Warner to be sent into exile. Then the umpires and the DRS consistently worked against the fair and ever sportive Aussies. And then came the weather..
We Aussies don't need to prove anything to anyone. We are the best in the world. The only reason we lose games is because of horrible umpiring decisions, unsporting opposition players, hostile crowds and imperfect technology. No other country has given as much to cricket in terms of character and skills as we have.
The Poms deseved a shallow Ashes victory in the rain. Aleem Da's decision for Broad saving the 1st test for them, DRS rubbish, blatant time wasting, ridiculous over use of their sub fielders and the fielding team asking for light yesterday?
Soft victory for a soft team. .
I think the Aussie team should start copying the English tactics:
-pressure umpires
-don't walk when obviously out
-ball tampering
-dodgy pitches
-slow play
-stalling tactics
-appealing for catches when they knew the ball had not been hit
-playing South Africans as English
Obviously England will do anything to win, and fallen into the Indian trap of preparing dodgy wickets. I hope Cricket Australia never stoop so low as to fix the wickets, and then during the match give the wicket some extra life if Eng lose the toss.
I think England lost a lot of respect by their disgraceful stalling tactics on day 4, which unfortunately were rewarded, by umpires (after being hassled) to call bad light when the Aussies were batting.
Aussies cricket fans can't wait until the cheating poms come down to OZ....
And countless more posts of drivel from the whinging Matilda's
It's all about blaming others instead of a bit of self assessment as to why you fail.
As a non cricketing person it looks like the Aussies beat us in the last match even if they didn't win.
They might do the same in the next 2 matches ,surely the jumping up and down should wait til then.
I appreciate the rules are the same for everyone, it just seems a bit odd.
I'm very amused by the 'soft victory for a soft team' comment in the Aussie newspaper. Wasn't this the Aussie team that had a full-on tour barney over grown men not submitting their homework?
Doesn't get much softer than that. They can't go back to the Boonie beer drinking record era, but they need to rediscover some grit. Steve Waugh and Mark Taylor weren't often pictured propping up a bar, but they had some bottle and some attitude.
In the longer term, they need to unearth some players that are a shoe in on the team sheet for every game. Only really Clarke, Siddle and Haddin are that at the moment, and Haddin is past it and showing his age with the gloves.
Root caused Warner to be sent into exile.
Indeed, by callously, and with malice aforethought, leaping on to Warner's fist.
🙄 And they say the British are the whingers? 😆
surely the jumping up and down should wait til then.
Not really. They can win the next two matches, and it won't change a thing. They needed to win the series to regain the Ashes, we only needed draw it, and in doing so, we've retained the Ashes at the earliest opportunity. We could simply not turn up to both of the next matches and forfeit the games, and it still wouldn't change that fact.
Root caused Warner to be sent into exile.
It's not so much who caused it for me, it's the fact that they sent him off to SA at all.
Why didn't they just do what any sensible person would do in that situation?
Just sit him down and say "On the record, you did a very silly thing there. We are going to fine you, and if you do anything like it again, you'll be sent home - we can't avoid it. Off the record, you have brought shame on us - he hasn't even got a black eye."
To the press (through gritted teeth) - "it's been dealt with inside the camp".
Looking at Warner objectively, I think he will still be found out in test cricket, but he's one of their 2 or 3 best batsmen (even if he is a limited overs player in essence), and they should pick him.
At least he tried to thump one of the oppo rather than sending texts to them undermining his own captain............
Just sit him down and say "On the record, you did a very silly thing there. We are going to fine you, and if you do anything like it again, you'll be sent home - we can't avoid it. Off the record, you have brought shame on us - he hasn't even got a black eye."
Because he's already had plenty warnings for being a tit on Twitter etc. Until they realised the parlous state of their top order, most Australian press wanted him sent home in disgrace also.
Monty, put it away.
This could be interesting. Wonder what the ECB response will be to this revelation
So now KP has allegedly cheated by putting silicon on his bat to avoid hotspots????
Got to be another bogan whinge tactic, if you team is not playing well accuse the opposition of cheating.
I think the Aussie team should start copying the English tactics:
The tactic they should copy is "winning".
Aussies: you lost, deal with it.
I suspect Monty is an STW regular - he's already weed in some guy's shoes... so how long before he pwns Michael Clarke with bombers?
😆
Just shows how most sports fans are not objective whether cricket or footie
Australia were probably beaten by the weather this test and they have done better than I would have expected so far so well done to them.
The DRS has been truly woeful for both teams IMHO and they need to look at it as it has made some howlers rather than remove some.
Perhaps let the Umpire call DRS rather than players ???
The accusations of cheating etc are not even worthy of a response
I see Shane Warne thinks the England players are "smug". Now, where's my ironing board.
Perhaps let the Umpire call DRS rather than players ???
Oh god no, it'll end up like rugby where the on field officials are incapable of even scratching their arse without asking for the TV official's view
I see Shane Warne thinks the England players are "smug".
Good. They have a right to be!
