News would be travelling across the narrow sea. Possibly instigated by Varys, as it's in their interest. You'd think there'd be rumours flying, which Cersei and Jon are just confirming.
Oh, one other thing that seemed a bit odd.
How had Arya managed to not hear about the Battle of the Bastards until pie boy told her? Surely the area would be abuzz with the news?

Yes I know but when you establish a reality or a cultural mindset (even in a fantasy setting) you need to acknowledge a shift in that reality. I could be wrong, I could be forgetting some scenes but it seems like lazy or neglectful that everyone has gone from being sceptical about everything to just accepting everything.
JamieHow had Arya managed to not hear about the Battle of the Bastards until pie boy told her?
Not the first time Pie Face McGuffin has facilitated the spread of news.
Too much clunky expositiony dialogue in these last few episodes. Also, I found it slightly incongruous that everyone in Westeros now just accepts that there are Dragons again. No questions, no skepticism.
Given the number of dragon skulls about its not a massive surprise.
As for getting places quickly we could have had an entire series take place while js heads to dragonstone and back. It would just be rubbish and dragging it out. I'd have preferred longer episodes but in reality there is an ending and we do need to get there.
mikewsmithGiven the number of dragon skulls about its not a massive surprise.
Yes but that's framed by information about the last known dragons being the size of cats (or something) and dying shortly after birth hundreds of years ago, along with dismissal of most or all mythical beasts.
I'm not suggesting that the audience can't figure it out - it's better when it's established by the show, not left to be guessed at or assumed.

When he said to Arya that he was a survivor I immediately thought that his fate was sealed as GoT loves an opportunity to crush optimism.

I know, I'd even started counting slowly down from 5, expecting a mystery spear/sword/arrow/dragon/other doom to appear from nowhere!
The Euron fleet thing is still irritating the shit out of me. Even IF he'd managed to find them in the dark, how did he manage to get his flagship next to their flagship without anyone really spotting them. Surely even the most idiotic sailor would have thought that suddenly the fleet got a lot bigger. Seems that it was just a way to unleash Theon's misery on the viewers again, remove the Sunspear lot from the storyline and progress the Euron story.
Other than that, usual occasionally wooden acting and variable accents aside, I thought it was pretty good. I can't hear Little Finger without this coming to mind:
Oh and I knew Nymeria Sand was being bumped off or sent into some sort of exile this series, what with her being a main character in Iron Fist now.
remove the Sunspear lot from the storyline
so if the Dorne coup is all gone, who's left in charge?
TBH that particular subplot was always a bit dubious. The King's son is betrothed to Cersei's daughter, yet the consort (& daughters) of now king's brother, manages to kill everyone and take over and have the entire country/royal household/plot/series just kinda go along with it.
Theresa May seems the default choice after someone miscalculates and removes themselves from power as a result.
Presumably she'll be in favour of Dexit, call a general, weaken her powerbase, and then be unable to garner the necessary support to attend the forthcoming war.

Shhh! You'll attract all the big hitters from the politics threads. I can almost hear their weaselly little noses twitching in anticipation for yet another 100+ page shit show they can swing their huge e-penises in.
so if the Dorne coup is all gone, who's left in charge?
According to the Game of Thrones wiki (you piqued my interest enough to go and do some "research"), there are an unknown number (probably 2-3) of other children who, one assumes, are not as photogenic or good with pointy things. Probably two boys who are good at accounting or chess or something so didn't warrant a screen appearance or even anything more than a passing mention in the books.
I heard a theory today that the end of the series 8 will be the undead killing everyone.
It would work...

Genius
Agree with everyone who says it feels a little rushed.
Not only that but I'm still finding the dialogue clunky.
Obviously still amazing, but mostly because I'm so invested 🙂
I miss the days of 3min scenes of Varys/Tyrion, etc.
I wish they'd film a bit more of it outside during the day. It's so unrelentingly dark, I can hardly see what's going on half of the time!
The war council scene at Dragonstone with Tyrion/Varys/Daenerys/Olenna should have been absolutely electric - but fell a little flat for me.
Diana Rigg still stole it, but it wasn't hard.
hadn't thought about that but you're right! I think that's the first time all Dany's allies have been on screen together? Yet it felt like the village fete committee handing out jobs! The war council scene at Dragonstone with Tyrion/Varys/Daenerys/Olenna should have been absolutely electric - but fell a little flat for me.
Yep it's rushed now but there's a lot of action to pack in! Trailer for next week looks ace, big ruck and FLAMING SWORD!!
I find any scene with Dany falls flat.
I think that's the first and last time all Dany's allies have been on screen together?
(possibly) FTFY
I wish they'd film a bit more of it outside during the day
That would destroy their CGI budget.
Back from my hols and all caught up! 🙂
Agree with most comments re Eurons radar and immortality...a bit silly, but all good fun. Looking forward to Jon meeting Danny next and Arya's continuing adventures.
As for the campfire scene in Ep 1....FFS! 😕
Was the fight scene filmed using the same techniques as Sin City, it was very cartoon esque with all the speeding up and slowing down.
Morbid fascination with the Greyworm has yet to be satisfied...
nwmlarge - MemberWas the fight scene filmed using the same techniques as Sin City, it was very cartoon esque with all the speeding up and slowing down.
I guess you are referring to speed ramping / time remapping. Not really anything to do with Sin City. The Matrix was probably the first film that ripped the arse right out of it. John Woo was a big proponent of it during his HK days, I think Sam Pekinpah may even have done it in the Wild Bunch.
Morbid fascination with the Greyworm has yet to be satisfied...
I was expecting a gratuitous scissoring scene ala Southpark but luckily we were spared that. I still think it's a silly thing to do to an army of trainee soldiers. Would limit their aggression, strength, muscular development etc and I imagine Greyworm would have a much more feminine voice?
I think it reminded me of sin city due to the lighting and general low level light in the whole shot.
The way the scene was portrayed was very cartoon esque imo.
The Matrix etc is more bullet time wide spacial shots with high clarity of what you are being wowed with.
Well funny when reek just jumped into the ocean like a coward. He'll be in it till the end now, I reckon, as an observer.
So... any other loose ends?
The Blackfish is still at large as he escaped from Riverun. & what happened to Edmure Tully?
Gendry went off on his boat.
Anything else?
The Blackfish is still at large as he escaped from Riverun
He did?
Gendry to pick up Reek in his little boat next week
ah yes sorry Jamie, I'm getting confused with the book. He did get killed in the Tv version. I don't think we actually saw his death though did we, didn't he just go back up the stairs after seeing Brienne and Podrick off?
There are 2 wolves left, is that right? Ghost and Nymeria.
didn't he just go back up the stairs after
Yes, but later on Jaime is told he died in battle.
As for wolves, yes. Nymeria we saw last episode as a wolf pack leader, and Ghost is chilling out at castle black (I think).
As an aside, Alt-Shift-X is a great source for all things GoT breakdowns and whatnot.

Well you could have explained yourself better

That's called speed ramping. Even if it happens within "bullet time" it's still speed raming / time remapping.
nwmlargeThe Matrix etc is more bullet time wide spacial shots with high clarity of what you are being wowed with
The vast majority of scenes in the Matrix take place at night in dimly lit interiors, the exception being the rooftop rescue sequence.
Not an episode for those who are disliking the time thing.. Though at real speeds we would still be waiting in season 8.
Anyway another stark in winterfell who doesn't want the big job, tyrion is not drinking or knowing things, the conquer the seven kingdoms is looking a little harder so I'm waiting for dragons to come play.
Nicely paced episode for me, waiting for Sir friendzone to make it back into the action
Somewhat amusing that the recipe for stoneskin cure is actually as simple as "pull it off, cover mess with goop".
Yep. I guess they are setting Sam up to become the GOAT of Maesters as he performed the supposedly impossible with basically zero hassle!
Feeling shortchanged with the off-camera & shortened battles, seeing as the justification for having 7 episodes not 10 was to spend more on each one... they'd better really pull out all the stops later!
The ebb and flow of war was nicely portrayed though & two of probably the nastiest, most bitter moments so far were well done (if uncomfortable!)
Third episode very good. 10/10 despite no boobs.
Lol. Didn't even notice that, guess that means the episode was pretty compelling! The only weak point was the DT/JS meeting, lacked tension of any sort despite her attempts to appear threatening! The scene with Cersei & Euron was way better.
Who would fall for this trap!?Third episode [...] no boobs.
...oh!
10/10 despite no boobs.
Cersei after knobbing her brother again, no?
Zokes: sorry that happened so fast I forgot and it was a side boob at most......
Liked it, best episode of this series so far.
Olena Tyrell gets to sum up Joffrey, Euron asks for relationship advice, and Samwell disgraces his gender by reading and following some instructions.
Ok...this Euron ninja fleet thing is getting a bit much now.
I keep turning around and expecting to see several hundred ships that weren't there a minute ago.
What has Bran Stark seen that upset Sansa? Got a bit weird. Good episode.
Her wedding to Ramsey?
I thought that was a great episode, quite a bit of dialogue to help set things up instead of a load of action scenes back to back which jump all over the place. Pleased to see much more Tyrion too.
Agree with the ninja fleet being a bit OTT.
Melisandre seemed to give Varys the willies when she revealed something about them dying in these foreign lands, as if he remembered something he'd forgotten....
Yeah the fleet thing is a bit crap but I guess necessary in the now time-condensed universe in order to weaken Daenerys' forces enough to make for any tension when it comes to the pre-Night King battles. I'm not a big fan of the Euron character either, having such an overdone Blackadder-esque character in GoT is a bit too jarring IMO.
Presumably it wouldn't take long for the dragons to fly to Casterly Rock and burn the siege army + Euron's fleet, seems too easy though? I think until one of the dragons is killed it will still seem too one-sided so unless they've relocated some of the ballistas from King's Landing then maybe Euron produces the Dragonbinder at Casterly Rock?
At least Tyrion is off the hook for Joffrey's murder.
Also, no Hound again? Boo!
I was really hoping for a Ayra and Hound reunion. Best double act going.
You see, if I was about to attack a big castle, i'd send a few spies to make sure that most of the occupants don't decide to bugger off somewhere else. It's not going to plan for Tyrion.
Bronn is back, not speaking yet
Now Jamie knows it was not Tyrion who killed his son, it sews the seed for the inevitable queenslayer scene, despite his protestations
Well there is a trailer out... one thing is they got the gold, they havn't paid the iron bank yet. Few dragons might change things, maybe Jon could ride one
Melisandre seemed to give Varys the willies when she revealed something about them dying in these foreign lands, as if he remembered something he'd forgotten....
There was something there. Not covered by any of the recaps so must be something yet to be revealed about his past?
Complete lack of reconnaissance is doing for Dany and Tyrion. Entire Lannister army on the move and they've got no-one on the ground to see them coming. I suppose it demonstrates how isolated they are - they're an overseas force with no-one on the ground.
Has Varys retained none of his network of 'little birds'? Could they not send the dragons out like a few SR-71's doing high altitude recon runs?
give Varys the willies
Bit insensitive, considering.
Bit insensitive, considering.
😆
Really enjoyed that last night but after having a good think about it it cant be just luck in the Lanister favour can it.
Heres a question a leak/mole IS Tyrion playing the bloods thicker than role, just seems funny that both plans haven't gone well for blondie. will Sir Friendzone( love this) come back into the fold and sort this problem out ? Is varys up to little birding ? food for thought
Here's a thought: Melisandre having lost her mojo a while back equates Dany and Snow to fire and ice. The red herring speaks again.
I also don't like how they have made Tyrion suddenly a bit stupid when it comes to his strategising. As above, he learned from The Spider, so would have surely sent out scouting parties to see what they were running into?
Anyway, I really don't mind who wins now. As long as certain % of my fav characters survive I am fine with any outcome.
I was upset when Ramsey died, tho.
Now Jamie knows it was not Tyrion who killed his son....
To be honest, I've known for quite a while now.
As long as certain % of my fav characters survive I am fine with any outcome.
0% seems the most likely.
A better episode I thought. I'd agree with all of the above, everything's happening faster than the speed of logic. But hey, they are obviously priming it for a big finale and the pieces need to be shuffled into place.
Of the major characters in Danaerys' council I think Varys is the only one who could plausibly be a mole. I think the red lady's remark was that he would die there - implying she knows the where and how of his death?
- implying she knows the where and how of his death?
In the study via the vagina demon.
In the study via the vagina demon.
Miss Scarlett and Professor No-Plums?
Mrs White and Colonel Bastard look on aghast.
Zero chance of Tyrion or Varys being moles IMO, of all the characters they have the most altruistic motives with no divided loyalties. I think they've (Tyrion especially) have simply underestimated Cersei, which they'll be keen not to do again, however there is still the secret dragon killing ballista so still scope for it to get worse before it gets better for them!
0% seems the most likely.
The undead kill them all.
The end.
I wouldn't over-think it TBH.
They just have to turn what looked like an easy win into a battle against the odds for the purposes of dramatic tension.
I can't decide if the fight with the Night King has to come before the fight for the throne or not.
On the one hand the fire/ice seems to be the main legend, so would be a fitting final battle, but on the other they seem to be making it so that they'll be so depleted that they really need the help of the northern lot in order to take King's Landing.
Constantly saying "you could take kings landing now if you wanted" does reduce the drama a little though.
In general, I just wish they would take their time again. There should have been a whole season just to cover what's happened in these first 3 episodes. It just seems out of sorts with the rest of the seasons.
At least we had some better one-liners this episode.
My money would be on the frozen zombies rocking up while they're still duking it out for the Iron Throne.
Indeed, but then its just a story! 🙂Has Varys retained none of his network of 'little birds'? Could they not send the dragons out like a few SR-71's doing high altitude recon runs?
No one has commented on the revenge by Cersei on Ellaria......which I thought was very well acted. Quite a horrifying act that is meant to last for decades! urghh! 😥
Was also thinking we haven't seen anything of Bran and suddenly he arrives at the gate. Not sure how his character is going to pan out in this series?
I don't remember there being so many funny bits in the previous series. Each episode has a few genuine laugh out loud moments.
He really was a See You Next Tueday, wasn't he?
You stand in the presence of Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, rightful heir to the Iron Throne, rightful Queen of the Andals and the First Men, blah blah blah. This is Jon Snow
Enjoyed last night, some great Comedy moments - "this is Jon Snow", the whole Queen of Thorns Scene and some lovely old school Brit-Swearing which I won't repeat.
Ellaria as ever spellbinding to look at, even in the most dire of circumstances.
I didn't realise it was that long. I assumed a couple of weeks. No one has commented on the revenge by Cersei on Ellaria......which I thought was very well acted. Quite a horrifying act that is meant to last for decades! urghh!
So it's a bit like smoking and drinking then?
Anyway - if it's that long, I guess there is an opportunity for it to backfire and them still have a part to play.
I think the point was leaving her in the cell with the decaying corpse until she dies herself.
I didn't realise it was that long. I assumed a couple of weeks.
The idea is that she watches her daughter die in front of her and she is never removed, so watches her decompose for years to come. To be force fed to keep her alive and the flames burning bright so the veiw never goes away!
Sick or what?
Sick or what?
I dunno. The Dorne plot line was pretty terrible. Seems proportional.
Damn. Lost post.
White Walkers seem to have an incredibly poor sense of direction. Last time we saw them they were at Hardhome

Wall is supposedly 300miles long. They could have reached Eas****ch in a few days lumbering continuously (presumably don't need to sleep eat or rest). In the time theyve been heading south the rest of the characters have built fleets of ships (Euron), marched armies back and forth across Westeros (Battle of the bastards), etc etc.
Presumably they've taken a few wrong turns and got hopelessly lost in the snow or put the wrong postcode into the satnav. They'll likely turn up some time after humanity in Westeros has developed nuclear weapons and annihilated itself.
you see there's some simple lessons out there that er indoors hasnt learnt... time and again we ve seen folk half dead leap up and put an end to thier tormentor.. the rule of thumb has to be when your mans down kill him good and proper.. leaving the mum to become a little upset in a dark place doesnt count.. she ll be back..

A convivial evening receiving the attentions of Ser Robert Strong?
Both brothers falling over each other to kill her first?
Being reanimated as Cerseizombie after the white walkers finally find a compass and get to Kings Landing?
