Hiya,

had a pair of Berghaus goretex gaiters for about 20yrs now, but they are officially wrecked. need new ones.

I have tried in the past, internet, trying on in shops, but none I have found fit over my calves. I can't even get the zips even close to closing. I had no idea it would be so tricky to find.

XL sizes go up in length, but not seemingly enough girth. I am tall and large of foot, so XL is good for that, but I need them to fit over a 20" calf.

There must be a few others on here with footballs for calves, any recommendations for a set of walking gaiters, goretex, zippy up at the back, for 'proper' hiking use?

ta muchly!

Just a nudge in case there’s someone about this evening with any insight, cheers!

I have the impression that Paramo ones were quite generous, but I’ve had mine for 10 years plus (hardly ever wear them) so can’t comment on current style. Also they’re quite warm, being Paramo.

Might be worth trying to find some designed for winter/HA use, as they’re usually cut to be more roomy - from memory, I think the Rab Hispar might fall into this category.

Aye, they are not wee.

Will investigate Paramo and Rab, cheers. First google on Paramo brings up a link saying "this slim fit gaiter...", though I assume there are others in the range!

Pit pony here; outdoor research gaiters are very generous. Velco closure up the front not zipped.

Right, update on the most gripping thread of the month!

blurty - cheers, I looked but struggled find any in sizes other than S or M

Emailed Tiso, spoke to Elis Bringham - they both said "we got nothing"

ditch_jockey - Rab seemed to be the right ones, phoned them and had a wee chat. You were also right about more winter based gaiters.

So, there were some mens Latok extreme gaiters on sportpursuit, I've gone for those.

Will report back for the next gripping instalment 🙂

I was about to suggest Rab....I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum and can't get any of the Rab ones to stay up!!

Look past the climbing and hiking gaiters at ones aimed at the shooting fraternity. Harkila are big. My lad at one point had calves around the 22"-23" mark and the Harkila were the only ones that we could find.

Other potential fits are Snolock, Black Islander and as said above, the old style Paramo ones were also pretty big, but I believe the current ones are slimmer fit.

Hiya, also updating on this. Scapegoat, didn't see your reply, will keep harkila in mind. 23”? 😂😳

The Rab Latok Extreme gaiters were comically bad. The biggest size didn't come close to being higher than the Widest point of my calves, and yes, they wouldn't close either even on naked legs.

Blurty, I’d told my mum of my frustration to much hilarity last weekend, and she came up trumps finding Outdoor Research Crocodile gaiters in XL and at a pretty good price. They arrived this week, and are perfect.

Marvelous, thank you again lovely peeps!

Yep. He was an avid mountainbiker, and an age-grade county prop-forward. The combination of hefty weight-training and cycling meant his calves were enormous.

big-n-daft - and where, pray tell, were you 4 weeks ago when I asked this question? Hmm? Hmm?

Out striding the hillsides in your large, well fitting gaiters, thats where! Cheers! 😉

Nah, seriously, I'll remember that for 20yrs from now when these ones die. good to know!
