As a kid I used to love books on space, astronomy etc. I always marvelled at the pictures of the Barringer meteor crater in New Mexico. Last year I flew to San Diego for a work trip. I fell asleep in my window seat and randomly woke up just as the following picture appeared in my window!

Fantastic crater pic.
...but you FELL ASLEEP on a plane???
That's when it's most likely to crash!!

Not that I'm scared of flying or anything.

Feefoo, I would like to think that I am the scardeyest flyer, falling asleep is the best thing to do, but this only happens if you load up on gin and valium.

Mme Moonteresse attended a space shuttle launch as a VIP. Her dad, a NASA scientist, worked on an instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. They weren't that far from the launch site. She said they have sluices which flood the launch pad with water seconds before blast off. The noise, steam and flame awesome in the truest sense of the word.

An urban myth surrounding the New Mexico crater tells of an air stewardess seeing it for the first time and saying to the pilot 'those folks were lucky, it just missed their house'

I'm very jealous and a little sad that not only have I never seen one, but now I never will.

I have seen a rocket launch, though. Awesome is right.

Yep. The 'smoke' you see is steam from all the water flash-boiling.

I was once on a SAA flight from Nairobi to Johannesburg and a very short time after taking off the captain told us we would be passing Kilimanjaro on the left and since the vis was so good he had got permission from ATC to circle the crater. He didn't do a full circuit but he dipped the wing and circled and for about 5 minutes I was shooting pictures straight into the crater, later when I got them developed I could even see a zig-zag footpath leading up to the edge. Amazing.

globalti, all sounds nice and all, but anecdotes do not make science. Therefore post pics.

On flying into JFK on a school trip, a small group got excited and rushed to the windows to gawp at The Golden Gate Bridge. 😕
No photos sorry.

On one "interesting" landing at Glasgow airport in a storm, I was fairly excited by the very close-up views of Paisley golf course at the window.... 😯

Got down in one piece (but in a similar way to those Bilbao pics). Then the pilot (after round of applause) came on the speakers to announce "ladies and gentlemen, please remain in your seats with your seat-belts fastened while we reverse back onto the runway..."

Didn't someone paint "Welome to Chicago" on the roof of a building on the way into LA airport once...
Bet that made a few panic.

Flying to The Gambia takes you over a weeny bit of the Sahara. Can make old what looks like old rivers.

The one thing I always wanted to see was a shuttle launch. I feel terribly sad that that ambition will never be realised. 😥

Sorry, I just saw this, and couldn't pass it up. The Golden Gate Bridge is only on the other side of the American continent from JFK.

Was this a real field trip, or one you woke up from? 😉
