Second weekend running I've caught Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show on R6 and there are some great tunes on there. Any suggestions for downloads/CDs to buy to get started?

Cheers, I'll check out those sites.

Thanks for the offer fd3chris. Thankfully I'm in the west highlands rather than Milton Keynes though 🙂

Was just going to recommend the same compilation as Binners 🙂 Some great grooves on there, such as

Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul.

4 awesome songs, this one being the standout for me.

like Parliament, Funkadelic, James Brown,

I also fell in love with all of Curtis Mayfield's stuff, Bobby Womack too.

Don't forget Roger Troutman/Zapp! Dammmm! He must've been the one to originally squirt Prince out of that Rifleguitar because listen

Mothership landing .do. I. smell. smoke?

Good suggestion from Binners above. I started my love affair with soul via Stax and Atlantic records - can't go wrong with Otis Redding, Booker T & The MG's, Sam & Dave, Wilson Picket for classic sixties southern soul.

Start at the start!

James Brown - Papa's Got A Brand New Bag

And then 'Cold Sweat'.

This is a good compilation:

+1 Roy Ayers

Often overlooked is Betty Davis, Miles' wife.

'War' too, they do have a few to throw in any party that must be some of the best latin funk

If you can get to see the original full version of Sly And The Family Stone's 'Higher and Higher' @ Woodstock freaking stupifyingly good. I can only find the snippet but worth it:

Get James Brown's funky people, all three volumes, some of the best funk there's ever been. For example

That's regarding funk, anyway. Soul appears more sneakily out of gospel and blues.

I'm a long time listener of the funk and soul show. A good place to start is the Craig Charles funk and soul playlist on Spotify. When I play that at bbqs etc I get lots of approval

As well as the classic stuff, its worth giving some of the Nu Skool stuff a listen too. This is an absolute belter...

Doing in my brains last night trying to remember an essential Marvin Gaye epic. Surely a message for today as much as then.

One of my favourite radio shows is Jeremy Sole on KCRW

It's pretty eclectic but has a good scoop of soul and funk. I particuarly liked this tune on this week's show:
[url=

Alexander - Love and Happiness It's original an Al Green track

LTJ Bukem produced 'Cookin Ingredients' series of albums is pretty funky

For soulful hip hop Common is good.

Recently listening to Gil Scott Heron and Northern Soul compilations. You can pick these up pretty cheap at the minute.
