After hearing about mansplaining on the Today program, in the Guardian and other internet news sites I watched the clip for myself. I couldn't help wondering if such attire would be acceptable at St. Andrews.

The disparity between male and female golf influencer attire on YouTube / TikTok is right up there with beach volleyball team kit. We will all have our own thoughts on how (in)appropriate skin tight leggings or very short 'skorts' are when trying to get golfing tips but it's a free / sexist world and some people are capitalising on their femininity to get clicks and likes. The PGA professional in that clip will be making a killing now. Not 100% sure it wasn't actually staged.

But she wasn’t at St Andrews, she was practicing at a private facility, probably a load of blokes there wearing jeans or tracksuit bottoms, which would be frowned upon if they turned up to play in at a PGA event.

I don’t get what the video has to do with the thread title tbh. Just a lady practicing at golf and some fool offering unsolicited advice. What am I supposed to be outraged at or defending here? Just so I can pick a side.

Well, given that she has a vagina, up till recently she wouldn't have been allowed to be a member at St Andrews, so the question's probably moot, no?

I'm sure the old guard might get sniffy if she wore it to play at St Andrews. And then they'd have a jolly good perv over it in the 19th hole. What what?

I’m fairly sure the whole thing was staged.

You’d need to be an excellent wiper wearing those trousers

I think there are two topics here;

  • Whether or not tight leggings are appropriate for golf (which I think was the OPs point). IMHO they look OK, especially if she was trying to analyse her golf swing, when I guess it might be useful to see leg and muscle movement. They certainly look more practical than baggy trousers or a skirt.
  • The "mansplaining" - with which I do have an issue. It's not always the case that a man explaining something to a woman is sexist. I've had both men and women try to instruct me about stuff with which I am much more of an expert than they are. Some folk are just like that. Mostly it's just them trying to help and I don't get upset by it. In this instance, she could have just said Thanks for the advice but I'm actually a professional golf coach and it would have been done with - though sometimes it's nice to hold back so as not to embarrass the other person.

Ah! The first one didn’t even register tbh. Figured it was the second one. Guy came across like a bit of a dick if it wasn’t staged. I’ve been cycling for more than twenty years and even I wouldn’t take my advice on the subject.

A driving range has (no) totally different dress rules to a golf course.

If you go outside, it might come as a shock to some of you, but tight leggings are quite popular ATM.

Loads of people will offer advice at a golf range - it's that type of game. Sometimes it might be unwanted, a lot of the time it might be appreciated as the golfer might be unaware of a glaring fault - with golf what you feel you are doing is often very unlike what you are actually physically doing.

I've even pointed a fault out to a famous pro (Ronan Rafferty) because the range pro standing next to him didn't seem to want to point it out 🙂

And her yoga pants aren't anything to note - they are very minor compared to what little most female golf influencers wear to get views.

I found it amusing that she took non of his advice on her next swing but he still took credit for it. I think she dealt with it well by just laughing. Think it was genuine and she was filming for swing analysis by her coach etc.

The mansplaining thing is difficult, I got berated by asking if a women on an Instagram picture was ok with her saddle angle (jump bike style on a borrowed gravel bike, that looked too big for the rider) and got strongly worded emails on how I could dare to say something when it was up to the rider and her choice etc etc.
But then on a group ride a woman was changing a tube and I held off from offering to help as I didn't want to be accused of mansplaining until she asked for assistance. When she did ask for a hand I said I thought about helping but didn't want to come across as an interfering male and she said oh, I wish you'd asked at the start.
It's a difficult world these days
