So I'll be around Bangor (and environs) this weekend. Biking in the daytime but come the evening...

Food/entertainment recommendations please! (for food, quality is more important than price/quantity).

Have car, can travel.

Cheers

I'm presuming it's Bangor, Wales, not NI?

I'm across the water in Menai Bridge, plenty of good options for food here. Personal favourites would be the Bridge Inn for excellent food or Dylan's for pizza in an amazing location (ask to sit by the window).

Can't really help with Bangor itself, I don't know it very well but is very studenty focused. Pretty small so you won't get lost 🙂

For food, "The Bridge" in Menai Bridge is pretty good. Very easy to get to – just head out of Bangor towards the bridge itself, go over the bridge and it's on the right hand side. You might also park on the left hand side before you go over the bridge and walk over.

Ha - snap. I haven't of Dylan's - where is it? On the main drag through town?

Cheers guys - yes, Bangor (Wales) not NI. Sounds like "The Bridge" and Dylans will have me sorted for food.

Entertainment? Please tell me there's something more than student pubs 😐

If you don't fancy the drive, the Blue Sky cafe (on the main street through town) does very nice food and the noodle bar is pretty good too (go for the Ramen).

Entertainment... ummm... go for a night ride?! It's very studenty I'm afraid and even they're away at the mo!

Also, if you have time to kill here are a few suggestions for this side of the water:

Have a walk around Beaumaris, even the drive to it is quite pleasant

Go to LlanfairPG and take a picture of the station sign (longest UK place name).

Go and see the statue of Nelson guarding the straits under the Britania Bridge (signs for Carrig Mon Hotel, park by the church, walk through church yard, don't get wet feet).

For a walk on the beach go to Llandona or Red Wharf Bay

Fat cat on the high street is about the only half-decent option in Bangor itself. As others have said, the bridge is pretty good in Menai, or further afield would be the bull in Beaumaris.

As for entertainment, pretend to be a student with little taste, or strike lucky if a local band happen to be on somewhere, of if there's anything decent at hendre. Culture is not bangor's strong point.

Indeed - but at least Pontio is now more than an idea and gigantic hole in the ground!

Dylan's is hidden down by the boat yard, opposite the Liverpool Arms. From the middle of the town walk down the road next the Buckley Arms and it will be on your left where the George Street turns the corner. Look for a blackboard, I think they normally have one outside.

That's something then... Last time I was there the uni had run out of money, shortly after razing theatr Gwynedd and the su. I can't say I was surprised by their financial ineptitude though!

hendre that brings back memories of collage, but yeah bangor doesn't really have much in the way of life out side of student stuff, although i did leave in 2000 so might have changed since then.

Best pubs in bangor are Mostyn Arms down near the seafront, proper pub, friendly,no food though, in upper bangor -Tafarn y Glob is the best, the belle vue on the main road has new owners and have heard its ok-- i would avoid the high st on sat night, not pleasant, although the Skerries pub down the bottom end is cool--often have music on fri/sat --friendly pub, --- Blue Sky does nice food, in middle of high street up an alley by the Only butchers left in the city. Eastern Origin cantonese up by the station is a good eaterie, best of its type round here. The fat Cat is a cafe/bar with pretensions and prices to match-- just could be anywhere in the uk... lots of 'polite' english types-- the weather forecast really good, roads nice and dry, oh and just to put you straight on the Bridge Inn-- its run by an extreme right wing twunt-- a nasty piece of work-- was seen kicking a homeless guy and his dog last xmas-- we boycott his over priced place.

Might be fun to pop over to Holyhead to see how much worse it is than Bangor....

Hmmm. Plenty of options (and differing opinions!) for food.

Since you're all being so very helpful, it would be churlish of me not to ask about the riding - I'll only have Saturday (admittedly all day Saturday) for riding (working Friday, travelling home Sunday).

My normal riding is XC/natural trails. Am happy on red-grade stuff. So if you only had the one day of riding in the area, where's good (given current conditions)?

Best pub in Bangor for beer would be the tap and spile down by the pier. Food, whilst honest enough, is probably a bit studenty

Fwiw, the fat cat, whilst pricey for the area, does do consistently good food, usually has local beer on tap, and a good atmosphere. The globe never really struck me as more than a refuge for the remnant welsh population. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but if it wasn't the 'welsh pub', I doubt it would have any distinguishing features whatsoever. Ymmv

Riding: if you want something easy to follow then head to penmachno or the Marin. Natural, pick up an os map and a copy of bikefax (if that still exists)

as its easter-- you are in luck, most students have returned to whence they came, so the place is not as hectic/overrun with bayying middle england voices--

Hmm, interesting. It tends to be the default work option when we have to entertain visitors to the Uni'. I might have to suggest we revise that.

Wasn't it nice, eating chocolate ice as we strolled around the fun-fair
Then we ate eels in a big ferris wheel as we sailed above the ground but then
We had to be quick 'cause Elsie felt sick and we had to find somewhere to take her
I said to her lad, what made her feel bad was the wheel going 'round

Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor
A beautiful day, we had lunch on the way and all for under a pound you know
But on the way back I cuddled with Jack and we opened a bottle of cider
Singing a few of our favourite songs as the wheels went around
