A neighbour had her fuel cap ripped off and petrol siphoned last night. Blast from the past. Didn't realise that kind of thing was possible on modern(ish) cars!

Sigh

Still, I'm sure that nice Mrs Truss will sort it all out

Sad sign of the times I guess.

Yeah, you can't just stick a tube in, I think they have a sort of valve/butterfly to stop that, but I suppose its not too difficult to craft a bit of metal tube to act as a sleeve and mimic the shape of a petrol pump nozzle to open the valve, then just shove your syphon tube through that?

I had my fuel stolen out of my little Yamaha RXS100 back in the day.
Must have been all of a couple of litres!

Different matter now in the van with a tank full of diesel 😭

Yep, I've always wondered what the 70s were like. My parents thought it was so shitty here they emigrated to Canada to ride it out.

Don’t think it ever went away, farms and haulage have certainly continued to suffer

Modified cars generally use Super, so they won't be nicking your normal fuel.

Yeah I tend to agree, modding cars is a seriously expensive business, if you are doing it properly, that is, as opposed to buying some tat from halfords to superglue on 😀
The cost of putting fuel in the thing pails in comparison.

My son is into modding his car, drives me nuts. Usually runs it on 99 when he can get it. It was a 1.2 15 Plate Monte Carlo Fabia 110 bhp. It's now a 1.4 180 bhp, and it's stripped out as a track car. My shed and garage are full of car parts. I'm building a storage shed for his sh1t. PS he isn't driving round too much in it due to fuel costs. Company van for getting to work, and business miles.

His mates are all as bad, but at least they aren't coming in sh1t faced at weekends - can't afford it.

What you expect with a cost of living crisis.

Also the duty equalisation change in April hasn't helped

At this point, the 10 litres of super in my derelict parts car are my retirement fund so if anyone steals that I'm doomed

Just put £10 in the run about Aygo - it will last the month ! My car is empty, and that will stay like that for another week, not moving. Might move at the end of the month.

Not to steal other people’s property.

Just using a tube from a green fuel can works, stick your siphon tube down that and pump away. Stupidly easy that you wonder why the scrotes go to the trouble of drilling tanks, cutting fuel lines etc.

Perhaps they need to steal fuel to go to work to earn some pennies to feed their hungry family?

A bit like the film Bicycle Thieves.

The Tories have a lot to answer for with their cost of living crises.

It's as bad as Italy in 1948.

Oh that's ok then ethical theft, what if the fuel they stole was from a similarly economically challenged individual, or someone who can't work and relies on their vehicle for basic mobility.

Enough with the culture war Ernie. This Tory government being criminally incompetant if not down right corrupt does not excuse theft, and we have them in power as many people now finding themselves on the breadline voted for this shower to get Brexit done. As much to blame for the current mess as the idiots they out in charge.

This is the dilemma that the film Bicycle Thieves deals with.

Have you seen it?

Edit: In case you haven't:

You might need a hankie.

I'm not condoning it in the slightest. Thefts theft.

Just with 2 quid a litre I'm not surprised sadly

Great film (The Bicycle Thieves). Shows that society goes in a swings and roundabouts way.

No, it will be the usual scummy little ***** who are stealing fuel from other peoples cars, much as it has always been.
Don’t legitimise these things. It’s wrong.

At the risk of stating the obvious...... get used to it.

Clothes, food, fuel..... I would imagine the rate of "low level" theft is going to increase across the board. That's not to condone it - just that it's an inevitable symptom of where the UK economy is now, let alone where it's going.

Building site thefts, doorstep parcel thefts - I would imagine it'll already increased significantly, and only going in one direction.

I’m currently selling a Landrover Discovery, it’s for half a tank of fuel in it. I’ve sometimes jokingly referred to fuel in the car as a selling point in the past, but now it probably is as that’s about £80 worth of diesel!

Have you done this? Any half way decent car from the last decade has an anti Syphon mesh screen at the bottom of the filler neck. So you'll be adding a metal bar .

It would actually be easier to drill the tank.

Cutting the rubber joint on filler necks is the usual one. Had loads at Nissan

We have a few construction site's and since red derv was abolished we have had nothing but trouble. We even had a full 2000l bowser stolen. Machines have had thousands of pounds worth of damage caused by thieves drilling into the tank and draining off the derv.

Have any of the people worried about the cost of fuel considered getting a bicycle?

The car in question was a 2015 Fiesta.

Funny that people are talking about the 1970s - when I said 'blast from the past' I was referring to 90's Manchester!

Modified cars generally use Super, so they won’t be nicking your normal fuel.

You give them too much credit round here. If they could all just crash into a ditch somewhere and burst into flames*, that would be much appreciated and less polluting.

*slowly enough that everyone gets out safely, but quickly enough they leave their phone and wallet behind so they have to walk home without making as much noise as they did when they arrived.

I really regret buying a V8 at the moment. I mean I love it and hate it. Its really hard keeping it fueled and feeding the kids. My only option is to sell a kid. The 16yr olds quite hard working if anyone is interested....

😂

I might get a bumper sticker made up: 'Less than £10 fuel onboard , and non-OEM cat fitted'. Or fill up my tank with salt. That'll learn 'em.
