I know there is already a thread on who the next PM might be, but I am interested specifically in who you all think (from a leftie point of view) the least evil of the official candidates is, and on what basis.

Until the Progressive Alliance wins and takes parliament in a more equitable direction, I, myself, would like to see a more reasonable and less polarising approach to the EU, and a good deal more care expressed for the underprivileged, but with no classical One Nation Tories left, I have no idea who that person might be.

Depends if you want an actually less evil PM, or a terribly shit PM that will sink the Tories and make them lose the next election.

Ideally, both at the same time would be great, but I think the latter option may be too risky. I mean, what if someone like Liz Truss manages to stumble through and win a majority?

Tugendhat is the centrist of this bunch.

IMO Boris Johnson.

go an read his theyworkforyou entry

https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/25428/rishi_sunak/richmond_%28yorks%29/votes

Brexit etc all pretty standard stuff but his social welfare votes, NHS and envir in my book make him a grade A ****.

Scratch that, almost his entire voting record is either card carrying tory scumbag or full blown prick.

He might appear competent and sensible but he's very right wing.

I was under the impression that Penny Mordaunt is one of the more progressive candidates. A supporter of trans rights, from what I've read. Still a Tory though.

I agree with you, TJ. I just want the one I can survive long enough for the cure to get voted in.

Mordaunt has done a U-turn on TWAW on account of it being a guaranteed vote-loser. For me, the scariest candidates are Braverman and Badenoch, who I think would go all in on a Trumpian culture war, which would poison politics even more so than now. No coincidence they're also front runners among party members. I agree that the least disturbing is probably Johnson but he's not standing (for now). I thought Javid's life story at least opened the possibility of a more compassionate and grown-up world view.

What an unpleasant thread title. Wish mods would ban people who can't be civil or just want to stir up trouble.

None of them are evil. By international standards they're all just a slight whisker away from the views of our mainstream left of centre party in the UK.

One thing I also note is that while there's a lot of completely inappropriate language and hate speech used in political content on this bike forum, it's all coming from left wing / socialist members of the community. It's not appropriate to shout 'scum' in the house of commons and the OP and some of the posters above should be similarly ashamed of themselves.

I don't think tugnut's credentials should be exaggerated. I believe he was part of the lockdown sceptic group of Tory MPs which to a degree pressurised Johnson to hesitate covid restrictions.

I think Johnson probably broadly got the pandemic lockdowns correct as he appeared to take the advice of experts a bit more seriously than the advice from anti-lockdown Tories.

Before 6pm today, yes, but he’d have faced a humiliating loss. The deadline has passed… no new entries allowed now.

Actually, I don't agree with you in the least. I think that the current crop of Tories have been instrumental in undermining the centuries-old liberal consensus that had only been interrupted in a like manner prior to WWII. And the reason that is appropriately termed 'evil' is that it represents an attack on an institution that has brought about peace, the welfare state, and taken centuries to develop.

The OP was not trying to stir anything up at all; he was calling on other left-leaning forum folk to express whom they thought might be the least likely to continue the present, destructive, course. The thread title made that pretty clear.

If you don't think it's destructive, then you probably aren't the sort of person for whom the thread was started.

What an unpleasant thread title.

I've checked and you are definitely not new here. And yet you sound surprised.
