Mum and Dads Fridge freezer is less than 4 years old. It’s split 2/3 fridge and 1/3 freezer. It’s a Sharp SJ B2330E1I

The fridge compartment is only working intermittently even though the compressor is running and the freezer compartment stays cold. Last night it was up at 15, and a lot of stuff has gone off. There’s a built in alarm and it keeps giving a warning that it’s nit cold enough, even though it’s turned up. Doesnt appear iced up or anything. Any ideas?

They are vulnerable under Covid rules and won’t have a repair man coming in

The freezer probably needs defrosted.

Many fridge freezers draw the cold for the fridge up through the top of the freezer. If it freezes off the air doesn't get throug.

Ask me how I know.

It will be a repairman job, more than likely. Compressor may be running but pumping too weakly, or the pipework may be blocked somewhere. Could be the thermostat, I guess. Hate to say it, but at this moment in time, if they can't get an expert in, buy them a cheap new one.

They can wait upstairs while you remove the old, install the new, and clean back outwards behind you.

Have they over-filled the fridge. Don’t these things need air to circulate via a vent in the back in order to stay frost free and for the evaporation to work?

A common issue with fridge freezers is for the drain in the back getting blocked. If you look near the bottom of the fridge at the back there is often a rail (can be slightly v shaped) with a small hope going through to a plastic trough that sits on something warm at the back (usually near the compressor). This evaporates off any condensation from inside the fridge but can get all clogged.

Try cleaning it out (may need a piece of wire). It worked for my in-laws a couple of years ago. The repair man told them how to do it over the phone.

Might work and worth a look.

Cheers, Ol

If it was anything like our last fridge the coolant haas leaked and the fridge uses all its recourses to keep the freezer section cold. In our case the cooling system wasn’t repairable and it was new fridge freezer time. It happened to us three times each time a month after the guarantee expired. 🥺

My samsung has a fan at the bottom which ices up and stops spinning... defrosting cures it... apparently it said in the owners manual that you have to defrost the whole thing every so often🙄

As above defrosting can help.  In ours there is a small flap that is opened or closed to let cooling from the freezer get into the fridge when needed.  If the system gets iced up or if the drain gets blocked then the flap can ice up and the fridge will either get to cold or too hot.

Defrosting is the easiest solution.  If you need the freezer to still be working then you can unplug it and just defrost the flap but that is way too much work

I've found these people to be good in the past. Especially when you google the part that you think is broken and it's more than the cost of the call out fee.

If it is terminal then 5 years is below the life expectancy of a fridge freezer. Try somewhere like MSE for letters and advice. We had a similar problem when a very expensive FF died in five years. Out of warranty but the general consensus of experts is that 10 years is a reasonable life for white goods of this type and we got a 50% refund as it was either not fit for purpose (built well enough to meet normal life expectancy) or defective from manufacture.
