whats you fave winter ale?

the next one.
problem is, beer/ ale tends to be too chilled these days so I often have a glass of red wine instead.

EDIT: Urban Dusk by the Redemption Brewery is nice, not quite a porter, more a dark bitter.

Salem's Porter was always a fave if you want some bonfire toffee in a glass. Don't see it so often anymore, if at all.

A Bateman's XXB or Victory are both winners.

Hmm I've never really hit it off with porters, despite wanting too. Im rather found of a nice strong stout. Young Double Chocolate Stout or Fullers Black Cab Stouts are two of my faves.
A nice strong dark ale can be lovely and warming, if a little dulling of the senses after a few.
Oh and its still Autumn, its not winter yet! (Well not down here it isn't)

We're having our Halloween Party tonight, kids, big kids, old kids, frail kids.. So a beer to suit would be Hobgoblin 😉

Acorn brewery old moor porter is a particular fave.
On a slightly different note I tried a Theakstons special edition ale which was very festive in flavor but the name escapes me.

Forget Hobgoblin, the Halloween beer, Pumpking is way nicer.

Only £1.50 in Aldi too.

It's all about the weiss-bier at the minute for me.

In particular Weihanstephan Kristall. 5.4% of crispy bite. Very nice.

Winter. Beer. But it's still autumn and there's no finer autumnal beverage than this one at present:

[img] [/img]

Flying Dog 'The Fear' Imperial Pumpkin Ale.

Velvety. Spicy. Dark. Rich. 9%. Lovely.

Funnel Blower from Box Steam brewery is a lovely porter.

Bath ales' festivity is good, and Bristol Beer Factory had some cracking stouts in their 12 stouts of Christmas, last year.

Tesco are currently doing 4 for £5 on all beers.

...so I treated myself to some of these to get into the winter spirit:

Was down in Hurley last week and tried a couple of "Rebellion" ales, "Pickled Ghoulies" and "Red". both *very* nice and *very* drinkable.

Thanks for the heads up Jamie, I think I'll finish early and head for Tesco. 🙂

Autumn does tend to bring some horribly flavoured beers to the pumps.
Anything that advertises itself as being spiced, or having chocolate, coffee, mocha or autumnal berry flavours can **** right off.
First sip is ooooo, but then you have to drink a whole pint of the crap.

Woking beer festival next weekend - often lots and lots of lovely porters there (plus some stinkers too).

Ah, Roasted Nuts - had a polypack from the brewery last Xmas 🙂

Will keep an eye on this thread for new beers to try although I'm feeling a tour of the local breweries coming on!

Dark side of the Moose by Purple Moose brewery is always a good one.

They have some very good winter ales on in the wetherspoons beer festival at the moment. Last night i had - Abbot Confessor ( 8.5%!), Titanic Cappucino stout and Batemans hazelnut brownie. All very nice!

I would have thought something like this:

[img] [/img]

would be very much up STW street - expensive, foreign, slightly niche and actually very nice.

Or perhaps:

[img] [/img]

Very British, very traditional, still very niche, and also very nice indeed.

I bloody love big porters/stouts.

Black Gold is a go to beer for me, regardless of season!

I brewed a chocolate espresso Russian Imperial Stout two weeks ago, it will weigh in at around 11% 😯 Will be a while before it's ready mind you!

Also, for a dark and mellow evening by an open fire:

Had a couple of pints of Shere Drop yesterday evening from the Surrey Hills Brewery. A pint or two of T.E.A. from Hogs Back Brewery works well at this time of year too.

I'm going to see what I can find on the way home, The IPA I've on tap in the shed won't cut it now! Unfortunately the wine merchants with a decent beer selection will be closed when I ride by 🙁

Cheers,
Jamie
