Latest French PM has resigned after 26 days! The 5th in two years makes the Conservative merry go round of a few years ago look strong and stable, to borrow a phrase from the era. For context that's a touch over half of Liz Truss's tenure. Macron won't go, apparently and might just appoint someone else to fail on the same way.
I'd actually be a bit interested in what some of our French correspondents have to say on the matter.
Whilst I am no fan of the first part the post system of politics that we have here, at least it tends to avoid some of the intractable issues you can get with coalition politics.
It seems strange in this era that Macron's wife should feel she has to provide proof of her gender because some Yank wingnut keeps banging on that she's a man.
Aren’t the French electorate just going mad because Macron has failed to appoint a PM who is a sorcerer that can magically make their ridiculous fantasy economics a reality?
That's certainly what it looks like
Honestly I thought there'd have been way more chat about Frances debt problems from some commentators on this forum.
The Beeb did a good breakdown of what's going on if anyone is interested.

I think we are Indians looking at Le Pen being in charge over there in a couple of years time unfortunately.
I also see that the czech republic has just elected a billionaire, Trump loving NATO/ EU sceptic to lead it. He's vowed to stop their countries military aid to Ukraine and he even has a corruption charges handing over him. He's a copy and paste Trump through and through!

Europe and the world in general are in uncharted waters.

That's been my understanding of it. Macron came into power as this 'outside politics' figure with his Le Marche party because the French were fed up of the status quo. Of course once in power he became the status quo; and like all serious previous politicians he's come up against the rock/ hard place impossibility of making government finances work while entitling people to incredibly generous retirement etc. Compounding it is that in the last (parliamentary?) elections in 2022 his party lost its majority so now is unable to push through legislation on its own. The nutters on right and left have no incentive to play along; and even the other sensible parties are jockeying for position to try to win the next election.
But there's no real solution until the French people accept the tradeoffs inherent in government finances. Which they won't. Macron should probably step down, but even without Le Pen RN could well win the next election - they'll fail to address the finances AND start implementing hugely racist policies
France is suffering the same problems as everywhere else, financial inequality is increasing and the gap is widening at an accelerating rate. And as per usual the pretend centrists only solution is too punish the poorest and the workers rather than those with the deepest pockets bearing the greatest costs.
Macron has constantly demanded loyalty from the left, while stabbing them in the back and drifting ever rightwards. The NFP won the most seats at the last election, but instead of respecting that vote Macron has kept installing right wing prime ministers. If the RN win the next election, it will be because of Macron.
I think the French are about to discover the consequences of FAFO. Like many Western countries the population has been promised a lot and is expecting it to be delivered, without any downside, whipped on by populists and others with a vested interest in stirring things up.

It's had some weird effects e.g. suspension of the ÖBB NightJet services from Paris to Berlin/Vienna despite these being relatively recently reinstated, and popular.
the population has been promised a lot and is expecting it to be delivered, without any downside, whipped on by populists...
Is Macron not widely considered to be a centrist? He's the guy whose promises they appear to have listened to and put their trust in.
Centrist government paves the way for the far-right, who would have thought it?
Bloody knew it would be the fault of the bastard centralists...

Unfortunately Europe is very much in waters very charted in detail 90 years ago. And Britain seems to be heading the same way this time.

Just pop onto a different forum, plenty out there blaming the left for a bit of balance. They're convinced they're correct too.

I've thought for a while now that the UK is heading back to the 70's. The suggestion that Europe, and the UK, are heading back to the 30's is even worse.

Brilliant, I love it, the sarcasm suggests that the government's unpopularity has nothing to do with the government...... it is in fact the opposition's fault! 😂😂😂
It's the same in the UK, it is all the fault of Reform that Starmer and his government are so deeply unpopular, the government is completely blameless!
Btw "centralist" means political control under a central authority.
Thanks Ernie - I shall be sure to correct my incorrect terminology in future...
Is Macron still the President? 😆
Once upon a time there were a couple of big parties and three small parties. The smaller parties being far right and left, and in the middle. The two dominant parties have so disappointed they are now small parties so it takes a coalition to govern, and a coalition can't be formed. For a coalition to work parties have to make compromises and none are willing to do that at present. So we'll bumble along not being quite sure which tête de lard to vote for knowing that even if we vote it'll be for a kompromisslos tête de lard.
