Being a pleb who grew up on a council estate, I know nothing about French cheese. I'm currently in France and want a nice cheese sandwich.
Can you recommend a nice French sandwich cheese (not brie). Something like a cheddar or Wensleydale would be good.
Not Reblochon.
Cantal, cantal jeune if you have the choice. Or beaufort, beaufort d'été if you get the choice.
I like a nice Comte sandwich.
Pont L'Eveque
Goats cheese from a bloke half way up a mountain.
Buy some fresh baguette
Buy ANY french cheese from the counter (they'll let you try it first normally)
That's it. Lovely.
There's nothing better on Earth than a fresh baguette with good quality butter, brie, some ham and a few gherkins. Absolute heaven.
Edit: don't buy that Swiss Gruyere stuff; it's full of holes so it's a rip off.
Epous spread it on good and thick.
Saint Augur baguette and a good wine or in Normandy maybe a nice cider
Pont-l'Évêque is the correct answer.
Boulette d' Avesnes
I like a nice bit of Tommes de Savoie.
Langres is sublime cheese, +1 for Beaufort
To be honest, for me, you can't beat a proper (and I mean crunchy and full of air holes proper) baguette, smidgen of butter and a really ripe Camembert.
Pont Leveque is a naughty answer.
As is [s]Epous[/s] Époisses.
Tomme de brebis is best for jam sarnies
Cheers all. Don't joke IHN. I sent Mr TW to the Sherpa and he came back with laughing cow burger slices. Because they had cheddar printed on the pack.
Goats cheese from a bloke half way up a mountain.
had some of this a couple of weeks ago...ruddy lovely!
OP where are you, always good to buy something local ?
If you want to be a bit more French you would have a variety of cheese on a plate arranged from creamier more delicately tasting cheese round to stronger stuff. You would eat this with baguette but not as a sandwich, a little cheese, a little bread. Accompanied by a glass of something, usually a red
The french don't do cheese sandwiches. Eat cheese and bread separately, that's fine.
I'm in Montgenèvre. Anyone know about Italian cheese?
Bought some Comte for tomorrow. Going to have it in pain Provençale with some stinky saucisson noix.
Bought some blue mouldy stuff for breakfast. And got mini baby bells for Mr TW.
Tomme is always a winner
If you're brave try some Munster cheese. You can get small Munster wheels in some supermarkets
