They've not lost a child because someone was driving at "the best part of 40" (whatever that means), they've lost a child because they've failed to adequately supervise them and teach them road sense.

Well it's a shared responsibility in reality. Parents are responsible for their kids. Drivers are responsible for driving within the law. Given that the speed differential between 30 and 40 leads to a big difference in pedestrian survival rates, your statement is factually incorrect.

mattbibbings, I believe the confusion may have arisen due to your lack of punctuation. I have reread your original post, and I interpreted it as saying bailiffs HAD called looking for £1000 (it seems odd to mention an amount if they had not).

The punctuation police will be in touch.

I hope you got some written confirmation, or at least Sgt Helpful's name and number, so if there is any error on his part you have someone to point to. Magistrates are a bit cynical when someone is standing in front of them saying, "but the police told me no further action, this is so unfair".

From reading this it sounds like the police never followed up the failure to respond to the nip within 6 months. You made no mention of any summons . You were lucky there was a police error. Normally ignoring the system leads to a conviction in absence and points and a warrant for an unpaid fine . Your next reminder being the inconvenience of getting arrested and held for court if you can't pay the fine in full in cash.

I'd run up a grand on a credit card then moved to Jersey

That figures, eugh Jersey.
We need to turn that hole over the French.
