I’ve just cancelled my Sky subscription and was planning to use the dish for Freesat instead. Rarely watch TV as it happens so planned to buy a Humax Freesat Recorder.

However, this doesn’t seem to be on sale anywhere anymore!

Before I resort to ebay/Facebook does anyone know if I have any other options?

Ta.

We have a Humax and it's great. However we haven't used it to record anyting for at least 18 months as everything seems available on catch-up and can be streamed over broadband. In fact I don't think we've even used it to watch live telly for about 18 months. We now use an Amazon Fire TV stick for all our viewing.

I've got one about to go on Ebay. It's just sat for the last 12 months since we got Virgin cable in the street.

Got one. Used it extensively to record kids films & programs over Christmas & also handy for TdF stages when they’re on but like others have said we mainly do fire tv now. Also have a Manhattan freeview recorder which also works well if you have a normal Ariel.

I hadn't really thought about catch up TV.

Same boat - Humax HDR-1100S is the standard, although they seem to be disappearing from stores. Not sure if they're going away or Humax are replacing them soon.

Same here. Got rid of sky, got a humax dvr. After a couple years hard drive died. Got a new one off humax cheap as it’s a known fault. Never record anything now, stream everything. Firestick or whatever plus a cheap humax receiver is all you need.

I'll have a look at ours and get it up in the classifieds tonight if there's interest. It's this one: Humax Foxsat HDR

Question for those of you who stream. What do you do about live events, wait until the next day when the catch up is available or something else?

just one consideration if youre thinking freesat recording vs streaming.....

you can f-fwd the ads if youve recorded it, you cant with catch-up.

I use the pause feature while watching live TV a lot. Also the F-fwd through the adverts on anything I have recorded. Think they still have a dispute with Ch 4 as the C4 HD feed and 4od options disappeared from the channel guide & menu a while back.

The Foxsat HDR is great - there is a very good replacement firmware available via Hummy, and you can upgrade the hard drive in them if suitable drives are still available, you can decrypt HD recordings.

The only down-side is that the menus are a little slow to react by modern standards.

I got my Humax Freesat recorder about a month ago from Currys.

Like others have said, I use catch-up mostly, my little triffid (mrsspursn17) prefers to old school it with recordings though.

As above you can’t get c4 hd on Freesat. Hence firestick. We do approx 60/40 streaming/live tv.
The apps on the firestick are loads better than the ones in the humax box. Being forced to watch ads is the only down side.

Thinking it through I think we would miss no pause etc

Many providers (BBC, etc.) allow you watch a live show even if it's already started (option to start from beginning pops up). The only one I had major trouble with is catching up on F1. The highlights show does not appear on 4OD for at least 2 hrs after the show has ended. This drove me to get a VPN and F1TV sub via the US.

I'm trying to find one right now as my mum's ancient Humax is dying.

Info I googled says that Humax have pulled out of the market with Freesat handing the contract to Arris (formerly or possibly owned by Pace). Humax have stopped production and it's proving very difficult to source a box.

Arris as yet have not made one available, so it looks like no-one is making a Freesat recorder, you can buy the receivers though. Brilliant, nice one Freesat! thumbs up!

That makes sense as I messaged Humax and they said weren't getting any due to Freesat bringing out a new module, they failed to mention it would be with a different supplier!

As an update, I was having trouble finding a freesat recorder due to the above and they're selling on ebay for more than they are new!

So when I got an email from Sky offering me the TV for £13 (I was paying £29.50) I decided to stay with them.

I'll look at it again once my £13 offer ends and hopefully by then a new company will be supplying recorders.

My Humax died a slow death recently, stopped recording and constantly asking to "format disk", tried replacing the disk but software was the real issue and Humax don't support it anymore. No alternatives in the shop and no delivery date either...

Rarely used the record facility but biggest issue is the loss of pause especially on live sports like 6Nations. Hopefully some other bugger will bring a product to the market soon.

Rather than a freesat recorder, I just got hold of an old HDD (from when work upgraded to SSDs), got a £4 case from Amazon and plugged it into the back of the telly

It works, you don't have to go another box under the telly to record stuff, and it was a bit cheaper

Hardly anything on it though, as it's all on catchup or Netflix

Obviously we have a free sat telly to start off with...
