I think it's shocking; they are not wearing safety footwear or eye protection. All it takes is for that concrete to ping away from the wall and they will get a nasty scratch.
They really should have the spectators further back too, in case one of them slips.
i'm no expert but given the nature of the task would it not be more effective to use the pointy end of the sledge hammer?

They need something larger than loads of sledgehammers. They could learn something from Israel about demolition, possibly borrow a few bulldozers if they aren't currently being utilised.
