Yola is really easy to get up and running.

The best way is to remove the word "free" there. What's the best way for me to get a free kitchen?

The problem with free websites (apart from the time and ability required to do it) is that they look like free websites. Now, for a personal website there's nothing wrong with that, but for a professional front to a business, well, what image are you portraying here?

Yola, Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal et al can all be used to generate web sites (as can Notepad). They vary in features and difficulty, but it's hard to advise further when the only criteria you've specified is "I want a website."

you can save word docs as html.

you'll need a domain

you'll need hosting

if she's expecting to drive traffic tot he site through google she'll need to think about how she presents her site to the world in terms of text, links etc.

There are lots of free Wordpress templates out there that can be used to make a reasonable looking site without too much trouble.

I put together my website recently using wordpress and a cheap theme from Themeforest. It still needs some work to get it just right, but I'm pretty happy with the results. The actual website cost me £22 plus a few days of my time. I still have to keep paying for my domain and hosting, which I get through UK2.net for not too much money.

Is this very site not run on a wordpress backend?

Good system and very customisable. I still vote mr site if you can stretch to £25 as that includes domain reg et al

I've no experience with Mr Site, but I'm sure I've read something somewhere in the last day or two being heavily critical of them. Might even have been on here somewhere.

I'm using one.com. They've got an offer at the moment for regstration and 1 year's hosting for £10.50. You'll get a proper doamin name (eg www.fishytony.co.uk). They have templates for setting your website up, should do everything you need. Have a look at a few other websites for styles and layouts then copy the bits you like.

Mr site would also be very straightforward to hand over the content management. Charlie bike monger uses it. As do many small businesses. Worth a look anyways. Also simple to transfer a domain if you already have one

I did mine through my web hosting control panel - I used these guys www.dreamhost.com

You can get the first year for really cheap with the code G030 if you use the one year prepay option.

Here is my Wordpress site - http://www.grahamwynnephoto.com/ 😉

thanks konabunny, most of that can be attributed to the theme really; although I'm trying hard to get it just right.

if anyone's interested, the theme is dandelion by Pexeto. I can't recommend it enough and the support is excellent should you need it.

Not bad for a basic site. Two comments on the 'About' page:

Don't use 'About' as a heading - it's a waste. Use 'About Killowen shellfish' for example

You missed a link out on 'Jamie Olivers magazine' but you got some others so well done.

On the Location page why not embed a Google map so Google know your location. They can pick it up from your address but every little helps.

Your 'About' page should actually be your Home page as it is the most interesting.

Good luck

I'd merge "home" and "about," it's the same page. I'd perhaps consider losing both of those words and just have Thingy Shellfish as the heading; seems slightly classier, Home / About smells of Geocities to me. Same with "Under Construction," that's fine for a beta web page (ie, where only your testers are looking at it) but for a general release to the public it's inappropriate.

The theme is very basic, but WP being WP that's flick-of-a-switch changeable. EDIT - changed whilst I was typing this, that's better.

You could justifiably merge "contact us" and "location" as well, thinking about it. Maybe move the tidal information onto a separate page (I'm not quite sure why you need to provide that at all, but then I'm vegetarian so what I know about shellfish you could write on the back of a cockle).

Oops - seems to have got worse. The addition of the extra picture on the About page pushes the text off the bottom of the screen - search engines will penalise you for that and humans don't like it much either. Either float the image to the side or drop it to the bottom. The picture also needs Alt text to tell us what it is

Rather than tidal info. how about some seasonal info. on oysters, stuff that you might know but your average bod doesn't

You've got the right idea with the Google maps but why not go all the way and put the business on Google Places as well so it shows up properly and as Cougar suggested, just merge the location and contact pages
