as above , have a small ssd that i want to install windows etc on, from standard hard drive , any free tools out there to help ?
I did something similar a few weeks ago and used a program called ToDo from EaseUS.
you can download a free trial version from their website.

I did it it a couple of months ago. I had no luck with EaseUS as the laptop I was trying to clone had some funny partitions/bios settings, so I used Macrium Reflect as it seemed more straight forward to me for cropping out the bits of disk I didn't need.
In the end I had to do some shenanigans in the windows recovery command prompt to get the drive recognised...
+1 to the above (Macrium Reflect). Just used it this week.
EaseUS is as good as any. Many SSDs come with cloning software also.
Have you checked whether your existing usage will fit on a smaller drive?
Any compelling reason not to do a clean install instead?
Used EASEUS too, worked fine even though I was going to a smaller drive - just had to copy the extra off so there was only the right amount to move
@ Cougar, yeah its an older pc in the spare room running zwift and software for my drones, not much else on there and reason for clone is , ive no idea where the original win 7 has gone ?? ... and ive just been given a 120gb ssd đŸ™‚
Download Windows 10, install it using the W7 OEM key?
macrium is quite good
Another vote for Macrium Reflect, about as easy as it gets. Use it 3-4 times a week sometimes.
MiniTool partition wizard,
Did the SSD come with any software? Many have cloning software or can download their tool. Some have an optional cable with software to clone from existing drive in place, then you just swap the drives.
I got a Samsung EVO SSD and they have their Data Migration tool. I didn't get a special cable but could fit the drive as a second drive and cloned it that way.
If the SSD is smaller than the main drive you may need to do some rearrangement and clear off stuff. If Windows and you use OneDrive you can set the files to online only so they're not taking up space locally until you need them to save space during clone. If you can have two discs with the old HD as second then can plan to have data on the second drive and OS and apps on the SSD which will benefit the most from speed of the SSD.
Run Linux from a usb stick and use the dd command
exact copy of the drive guaranteed
for experienced users only though as it’s easy to overwrite the original
Download Windows 10, install it using the W7 OEM key?
Does that work? Legit?
My main pc is Win7 and I got my Win7 retail key.

I recently put SSDs in a couple of PCs. I tried MiniTool first but it didn't work for me - it rebooted to clone the drive (as it said drive was locked) and then sat at 0%.
I then tried EASEUS, it did a copy without reboot, powered off, unplugged old drive, powered up, all working.
