Looking for free anti-virus software that does its job reliably and well.

What do you recommend?

Going to be running an Acer laptop with Windows 8.

I've been using Avast for years and it works well. That said the standard advice these days from those in the know is MSE.

MSE not compatible with Win8. Supposedly it's now Windows Defender.

Already part of of W8, get Ccleaner and MBAM as well and that'll keep things running along nicely.

as above, just use the standard one built in to windows - really very good these days.
