live?
Been confirmed as a headliner for our local festival. So cracking stuff on the line up so far.
Not been a big follower of his, but I like what I've previously heard.

If you like his stuff, he's pretty good live. Lots of his stuff is quite easy to sing along to, so you get a lot of that from the crowd.

Franks quite good, what festival is it?

He's come through the festival and live systems to build himself up so should be a good one.

Can't stand his music myself though seems like a big name for a local festival

Agreed, saw him in Brighton some years ago, and he's good. Was a fan anyway. IMO Love, Ire and Song is his best album if you want to do some more research on his back catalogue!

Don't think I've seen a bad Frank Turner gig... The festival sets have been a wee bit safe sometimes but at his best he's really bloomin good.

Well worth it if you like this sort of thing or maybe even if you don't. And yep, Love Ire and Song the best album IMO- the recent ones all sound pretty much the same.

Cheers njee.
I'll be checking out his earlier stuff.
The festival is ynot ,bang on a Peak District hillside between Buxton and Ashbourne, brilliant for us as its 25 mins from home.
Loads of new stuff on the bill plus some old randoms.

Much better than Mumford, great live when I saw him.
Ballad of me and my friends is my fave for drunken singalong.

seen hi a few times - always excellent. always great fun.

He's a touring machine, so he's got pretty good at it.

Love Ire and Song = best album. Love Ire and song, probably the best song too, but some classics in there as well such such as long live the queen.

but it's all personal taste innit - I've been a fan for years 🙂

I'd agree with that, although there are few duds on that album. Conversely England Keep my Bones was very underwhelming.

England keep my bones has grown on me steadily the more I've listened to it, to the point I'm not sure I could call it between that and love ire and song. They're about different things really I suppose, so the feel is different

Seen live a few times in recent years - always a good show... & teaches the new people the old chorus's so they can sing along as well..

Seen him live loads from a tiny gig at the joiners to wembley arena and always puts on a great show. Can be a little up his own arse but if you just go along with it you can have a great night. I would advise getting to know some of his songs prior to the gig because for full enjoyment its all in the singalong. If you can't be areed with albums just get balled of me and my friends, photosynthesis, long live the queen, glory hallelujah , and Wessex boy. Pretty mch guaranteed to play those.

Is it the festival in Derbyshire first weekend in August? I am considering that one with the family.

Yes that's the one John.
We took the kids last year (8 and 11) and we had a blast.
Admittedly had the Friday night on our own (mayhem) as it was the wife's 40 th, then they arrived sat lunch time.
The family/quiet camping is exactly what its supposed to be, nice people not all with kids chilling out playing music etc until say 11/12 ish then if you're taking the piss after that you are told to pipe down, and for once in this country everyone seemed to respect that.
We're going Thursday night this year.

I saw him with his old band a couple of times before he went solo, one of my favourite live bands ever. I haven't seen him solo yet other than on TV but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be good.

Seen him live 18months ago. Wasn't a fan at the time but I've, rarely seen a performer with such energy, enthusiasm and love for what he does. Really gets the crowd going and works hard for his money. Music's not too shabby, but a *little* bit too shouty and *possibly* self-indulgent for my tastes 🙂

He was sitting at the next table to us with some of his friends having a pre-show meal in the pub. He happily posed for a photo with my mate's daughter. Nice guy.

He should probably put out a bit of a health warning that says "hey, just because you like my new band, and maybe you like my new band's version of my old band's song Smiling At Strangers On Trains, doesn't mean you're very likely to like my old band."

(they were brilliant though.)

Fantastic live performer and I'd go to watch him if you've got the chance - he's used to it from when he was in Million Dead, who are IMO far better live and on CD than what he's producing now. Sleep Is for the Week is the best solo album IMO, but what has followed has been a bit too polished, for the masses songs to sing along to at gigs - whatever, he's made it so big in such a short space of time, good on him. Very nice guy who I've had the privilege to have a beer or two with in Vancouver of all places.

Anyway...go see him!

Ooh, he's done a new version of smiling at strangers on trains? Off to spotify I go...

I still love million dead, they were awesome, and getting better.

I like the Frank version tbh- prefer million dead overall but Smiling was always a little bit flat in the old version. I was going to say I can't see him doing anything as interesting as harmony no harmony again then I remembered about this... the bass!

What I've heard reminds me of Billy Bragg.
