Fractured Scaphoid driving?

So fell over 3 weeks ago, landed on my left hand and the next day went to walk in centre, no positive test for scaphoid but thumb bone x-rayed, nurse said if I had pain after 10-14days to come back, so I did after 3 weeks as pain was starting to be annoying, wrist x-rayed and put in splint as an 'abnormality' seen but by a nurse so not diagnosed, heard from fracture clinic today to have an appointment next week, so I'm guessing it is fractured.

Problem is I've got a holiday to isle of Mull, Scotland in a weeks time and we are driving there, the other half does not want to drive, as we are there for a wildlife photography break, we need a car, so flying is out of the question.

Has anyone had this fracture and still been allowed/able to drive?

I drove with a cast on for months. Cast was palm to below elbow so I could still bend my arm and use my fingers.

Depends, when I cracked mine I thought it was a sprain and carried on cycling and driving. It didn’t get better. Finally got an x ray and found out it was fractured six months later. Had to get the two half’s of the cashew nut screwed together with a self tapper. I then had to be careful with it to let it heal. Didnt drive for 6 weeks. It fully healed really quickly once self tappered

So if you have a non union then driving won’t make any difference as it’s not going to heal anyway.

It's not so much whether you can physically drive but how your insurance views it should something happen...I imagine.

Indeed. check with your insurance.  Often folk are told not to drive in a cast

When I broke my wrist and had a cast for 6 weeks I asked the orthopaedic surgeon who k-wired it about driving. He said it was a “grey area”. I drove.

This seems a fairly good resource…

I broke mine in France, drove home, drove to local hospital, got it plastered, drove home. Doc was thoroughly meh about it.

To be honest insurance was a concern so didn't drive until the cast came off a few weeks later.

I cut my cast off after 3 days and used a splint type thing instead. All fine

I did my scaphoid once, the pain at the time was instant and nearly made me pass out.
The cast I won for this had my hand bent backwards as far as it would go, and all my fingers spread out like a fan.
Three weeks I was like that. Missed out on a nice summer job helping to fit very posh kitchens.
Ironically, when taking off the cast, the doctor who poured over my x-ray wasn't convinved it was ever even broken.

Thanks for your replies.

Seems a suitably grey area, this is what Admiral say

"Can I drive while wearing a cast?
Broken legs, arms and collar bones are among the injuries most likely to hinder your ability to drive as struggling with a cast could affect your freedom to perform day-to-day activities.

You’ll need to check with your doctor to confirm if you are able to drive and, if not, how long these restrictions will last. You’ll also need to tell the DVLA if a broken limb means you’re unable to drive for more than three months."

So will wait to see what Dr says, my car is auto with an electric handbrake, so left hand won't be used much!

Does your car not have a steering wheel?

Tell the wife to man up and drive. Also how are you going to hold a camera ?

I driven back home from Scotland once with my wrist in a splint (later found to be broken). In retrospect it wasn’t clever to do so.

I imagine the Police would be interested if you are involved in a crash

Or could stop you whilst driving for driving without due care or attention

Check with doctor and insurance. We drove back from France, sharing driving between me and my mate who'd broken a bone in his hand and had a cast on. We'd checked and the insurance co were happy as long as the doctor was happy

I drove with mine pre-diagnosis, post and post op.

My advice is to skip the bit where you spend 6 weeks in plaster waiting for it not to heal, and go straight to having it bolted back together.

sounds like a typical scaphoid injury, doesnt show up for a few weeks on xray, diagnosed as a sprain usually,

broken my left one twice. if you feel you can drive then do, but try and grip a weight or put weight on it and it'll ache like hell

/\ second what benP says, i'd definately have mine bolted.

I drove/rode my motorcycle to hospital after an injury at work years ago where I cut and severed the tendon of my left index finger with a hollow chisel mortiser.

Left hand is the clutch so you can ride it with minimal use, until you get to town.

But then I'm rock, me. (I was also only about 23)

It's doubtful I would have had the backing of my insurance company. 🤔

I had a bad crash racing a few years back. Proper black and blue all over, very sore arm. Went to hospital but the wait was long so bailed in the end before being seen. Next day drove to afan but ended up not riding, following day drove Hampshire, then drove to Durham.

On the 4th day my arm  was still very sore, so went to a&e (in the van, obvs.).

Turns out it was a comminuted fracture of the humerous (leaving in 3 parts) "How did you get here?" they asked...errr.....

Had a letter from the fracture clinic after having reviewed my x-ray there is no fracture seen and it is very unlikely I have a fracture but I still have an appointment with the fracture clinic, which is a bit odd because I thought if you don't have a fracture then no appointment is made...

My other half would rather not drive on holiday either, but she coped fine when I had a shoulder injury and didn't have a choice! 🙂 It would have been quite nice being driven about except for the fact it was painful even in the passenger seat.

I drove some years back with a broken left wrist. Got knocked off bike on way to work. Manual and handbrake. Was a grey area, but new job and needed to be in work.

Should be fine 🙂

My experience was that the doctor said to ask the insurance, who said to ask the doctor. I just didn't drive...
