Don’t get any buttons at all

Some people do, some don't.  I'm not sure why but it's definitely not a local issue, it's something to do with the user accounts.

I see those buttons. I don’t see any way to jump to the last post in a thread, should there be one? Also how can you jump to threads you’ve posted in? I can see my posts under “replies created” but can’t see any thread titles or links to go to the actual thread or post? Ta

I don’t see any way to jump to the last post in a thread

Clicking on the Freshness link.

how can you jump to threads you’ve posted in?

I don't think you can as yet.

Clicking on the freshness in the topic view takes you to the last post in a thread.

What's this freshness thing then?

Edit: submit button doesn't seem too responsive in edge on Android

Oh we know it’s disappointing but with us helping report broken parts will help get them sorted. Of all the things to bother me a few feature not working on here is way down the scale.

People bitching about stuff not working on a free forum clearly need to get some perspective. I'm not complaining at all just flagging stuff that is weird for me.

Ah, I see - it's on the right in desktop mode

edit: I also see that you need to do the quote thing manually and 'keep a log of this edit' is still default to on

Liking it though -hope you get to escape the chaos over the weekend

... free forum

It's only a free forum for the freeloaders... Some of us help keep this place going by PAYING. Don't know if you're aware of this.

Thing that's bugging me, is some of the stuff that's been lost was useful and the bits in place are just rubbish! Like, without customisations, why are they like that anyway? Here some examples:

Freshness: Formerly, you hovered the mouse over the Freshness time and it showed you the last poster, so you could see if someone's replied. Now, it shows the name of the thread, which is bleeding obvious cos it's just over to the left.

Activity: One click showed you your threads you've been involved in. Now, takes about 4 clicks to get to Engagements, which is just a random list! Some of which you might have posted in.

Not moaning or complaining, just hoping things like this get fixed really.

Loss of ability to see which threads you’ve posted in is a big loss

<span style="angy">

You can no longer find your replies (used to be in "forum activity") instead there's "Forum Replies Created" which just has a list of replies and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">no way to get back to the original thread!!!</span>

Even more remarkably, there's a "reply" link, which does nothing. And a "report" button that, well, maybe it does something, maybe it doesn't. It no longer brings up the little report dialog box.

It's completely shambolic.

It makes even Brexit look good.

All of us keep it going by providing free content, page imprints etc for advertising revenue.

Ooooohhhh!!! How very exciting! Squabbling over who pays and who isn't and who is more valuable! I'm on a series catch up binge of GoT at the mo and this 'I'm more important than yow' behaviour and attitude is disturbingly like that.

Its a shame the update doesn't have a way of removing members...

Post and page count on chat forum post page isn't keeping up with reality either. My previous post was number 601, page16 but the main page was indicating 598 posts in total and page 15.

Safari on iOS 10.3.3

And page reload after posting this took me back to the previous page.

When I start writing a reply the first few letters of everything on the left side of the page disappear off the edge of the screen (Android mobile) and swiping does not bring it back over and the start of the submit button is missing.

When you write a post the Tags box is already filled out with the tags already on that thread. If I delete them as part of the post then they disappear from the top of the post

Time to get a new web developer?
This must be the worst forum design ever. I'm in quite a number of different cycle/kayak/motorbike forums, and the update makes this one the worst of the lot.
Great if you like seeing HTML tags and over sized quotes. Rubbish if you actually want to read it.

Has the traffic gone down much?

It's surprising how boring a forum gets without people cotributing to it.

Good question zokes

Given that our chosen sport is probably 15 months past it’s actual peak and 12 months before this is realised, and that owners of related businesses would be looking to exit or adapt, it does seem odd to screw up an important revenue stream in advance.

There is a long list of active forums that simply die very quickly and never recover. It would be a great shame is STW became just another entry on the list

hope it gets sorted out.

The point though is that there was a suggestion that this forum is free, so we shouldn't complain - when that's clearly not the case (FWIW I agree with zokes, non-subscribers still pay, just in a different way).

The only trouble with the current tag system is how ephemeral it is - blink and you miss the gems.

Can I just make a constructive suggestion to the devs and Mark here - I've alluded to it a few times, but it seems it needs saying out loud? Can we just go back to the old version for a week or so whilst you sort out all the bugs in the update - now you've done your load testing which you apparently had to inflict alpha testing on us for. I'm assuming that is possible to do, because any sensible update where you can't revert back you fix most of the bugs first before going live.

Not to flog a dead horse, will leave that to the devs, but why has this allegedly important bug reporting thread been unstickied? If I remember right, the same thing happened the last time we had one of these.

Not to say that history is repeating, but well a certain pattern has emerged over the last couple of years.

Wonderful quote just below your comment:
I need to give a careful answer to that. Singletrack is a huge beast where the slightest change can make a dramatic an costly difference to us and so it needs to be done very carefully.

How does that fit in with JFDI?

I'm sure Mark has me down as being incredibly negative about the site, but the thing is I work with IT and currently working on the release of a new system which involves a DB, membership records, payment systems and interconnected stuff, which is business critical. Sure it's nowhere near as big or complex a DB as the STW forum, but ISTM that's even less reason to do things with updates here I certainly won't be doing with our release (though the obvious difference is that in my case the customer can just get rid of us if we don't make a success of the transition).

I wonder if this works... (ooh, I've found an interesting bug!)

I am sorry the forum is ****ed.
I wonder what the traffic figures are like since the update, every time I come back i just get frustrated and don't want to stay.

1) Posting order has gone haywire, I am no longer the OP on lots of my own posts
2) The last poster thing has gone wrong in more ways than one.
3) You cannot easily navigate back to the threads you have posted on - in replies created I just can't reply or click to bring me back to the thread, so I have to scroll through the forum to find the relevant thread (luckily this one was near the top)
4) edit time is down to a few mins at most

I know you lot hate bolshy tossers like me so maybe its a ploy, but you would be better off just blocking/banning us..

<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">It is no longer a nice place, I liked it as it was, can we have it back please?</span>

I know I'm only a paying customer, and therefore unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but would someone, staff or mod, like to explain why this thread isn't a sticky topic? You know - actually be honest and provide a viable explanation?

Tip:

The issue with all the HTML <span> etc stuff is because when you copy text from a webpage and paste into here it includes all the HTML formatting.  If you right click and go 'paste and match style' this means it keeps the style of the place into which you are pasting i.e. this box, and you don't get the formatting stuff.

Not a long term solution mind, it needs fixing at some point of course.

ROFLOFLOFLOFLOFL.

You could post a jihadi recruitment video featuring beheadings and it wouldn't get closed down as quickly as a thread about forum problems.

Mention the necessary adblockers and the mods will move so quickly they're verging on time travel.

Of course, suggest a sticky about the forum software infecting people's devices and all of a sudden it's like the post is invisible!  :scratchchin:

Can we just go back to the old version for a week or so whilst you sort out all the bugs in the update

Seeing as we're left to speculate, I'd imagine the reason they've finally decided to update the forum is to maintain compatibility with the virus ridden ad spamming package they've chosen to burden you with.

I'm guessing they're on contract to provide a certain amount of human traffic each day/week/month hence unleashing this complete abortion.

Mark, et al.,

The tone of this thread is turning to despair. Please, please, please don't let the site go the way of all flesh. It's too good a community to see disperse due to due to technical difficulties.

I have already been part of one such forum:

https://web.archive.org/web/20080725060129/http://www.mtb-wales.com:80/

Which now looks like this: http://www.mtb-wales.com/

It was a build-up of frustration on members' part, until the forum was a bit like

Would it be possible to collate all of the known bugs into one page so that the same thing doesn't keep getting re-posted (or share the current list)?

Hi. I've tried three times to post a response to gecko76's thread about pining for the fjords: http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/pining-for-the-fiords-norway-content/

I've composed a full reply, with links and a photo, three times now. It shows up in preview but then just disappears when I submit it. I have managed to get a short, text-only post on there, but no sign of the others.

thanks

I heard there was changes here so popped back on to see what all the fuss is about.

Well, the redirects haven't happened while I have been reading this thread and others so that's a good thing.  But the rest of it as described above is shocking!    It's taken 3 nope 4 tries to get this to post so that needs sorting and the formatting on Chrome (mobile and desktop) is different every time.  Good luck sorting it out, otherwise this place is going to wither away.

As SaxonRider said earlier it has an eery feeling of what happened to the MTB Wales forum (can't remember my usename on there but looking back though the link he put up brought back some memories!), one failed change and everyone scattered.  I used to use the MBR forum after MTB Wales died and that one is now stumbling as it has so little traffic when the core group left a few years ago.

Please sort it all out ASAP as it's a great place and the likes of Facebook groups just aren't the same,

I'd better just keep adding this same point here at regular intervals.

This is an intermediary step to something bigger. The whole site is about to change quite dramatically but before we can do that we've needed to bring the forum software up to date. What many probably never realised is that previously Singletrack consisted of two websites running side by side. There was the front pages with stories and then the forum. They were both skinned to look like the same site but essentially they were separate. Now they are joined from a data, user and content point of view, which means we have a great deal more options for what we can do.

We now have a single database for the site which includes the forum. This was a necessary step. We were totally shackled by the old software and it's being ripped out so we can move ahead.

There are style and functionality issues that we are very much aware of and were expecting. There are some that we weren't expecting and these are being fixed. But we are only fixing what needs to be fixed before we move to the next stage of redevelopment.

I know many of you think that we are doing this all wrong, but we disagree. If you were sat here and had the same complex mess of payment systems, user tables, subscriber functions and digital mag services to unscramble then you'd probably see our point. But you don't so that one you are either going to have to take our word for or not. Either way, we are going to stick to our plan and relaunch the site.

So yes, there are bugs and they will be fixed. in the meantime I'm sorry for the glitches but sometimes you have to rip everything down before you can build something better.
