On Flickr use the BB Code option, Copy, Paste and submit

Probably picked up but when accessing the forum via Mac the mouse detects a couple of threads above the one you want to read (from the main page) so when pressing on the thread link the actual thread you read is not the one clicked on.

MacAir all up to date .

Cheers Drac, Ill try that now, but why did a picture get posted earlier where I didn't use the BB code?

[url= https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1755/28485526108_afa1ffa6a1_k.jp g" target="_blank">https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1755/28485526108_afa1ffa6a1_k.jp g"/> [/img][/url][url= https://flic.kr/p/KpaLuu ]IMG_1222[/url] by [url= https://www.flickr.com/photos/157359562@N05/ ]Tim Betts[/url], on Flickr

Edit: Ooooh! this looks like an easier way... lets try on the Boats thread again...

Thank you sir! 😀

Edit x2: Why did my last edit ^ not show up after hitting submit? Hence this second edit to ask the question....

Seemingly, I have to type my edit, post, then hit the edit button again and repost and that puts up my edit....i.e. need to submit an edit twice?

Edit x3: Except now my first edit shows after submitting the second edit, which didn't show up???

Mac OSX El Capitan 10.11.6 if thats any help?

There’s a cache delay sometimes so your edit won’t appear straight away.

You don’t need to use the BB Code there are other ways but it’s the easiest way.

Ah.... that will explain why after repeatedly pressing the edit submit, my original post appears unchanged... helpful. Will my edits eventually appear, or do the hamsters choose which edit gets to appear?

Got the BB code method off to a tee here, so thank you for your help Mr Drac!  When Im feeling brave, Ill ask about the other methods 😀

Using the desktop at the mo, usually browse on STW on the iPad, hence i paid no attention when others were asking about how to stick emoji's/emoticon's on here with a normal keyboard... Do I have to BB code them as well? Apart from the one I know how to do... 😀 oh, and this one 😉

The delay is only around 15 to 30 seconds.

i wouldn’t bother with the other methods to be honest.

When it was first deployed you could use about 4 different versions of a Flickr link those ways are now turned off?

The link paste is getting strange, at least it's consistent by the Web site but some do half a page, some do just a pic etc

Any idea when pasting text in here will be sorted?

Not sure Mike I use an iPad with that and Flickr being bloody clumsy I use the BB code option which is hard enough to copy.

Now they’ve got the bulk of GDPR out of the way hopefully they have more time to look at the forum issues.

i paid no attention when others were asking about how to stick emoji’s/emoticon’s on here with a normal keyboard…

On W10, right-click the task bar, select "Show touch keyboard button."  This gives you a little keyboard icon is the system tray.  (You can do similar with W8.1 but it's worded slightly differently I think.)

Click the keyboard icon, you get an on-screen keyboard.  Click the smiley face to the left of the space bar, and you get all the emoji you could possibly want.  (It's not immediately obvious, but you can scroll each page to the right.) 🙀

Apart from the one I know how to do…

For old-style emoticons, there's a list here.  Everything in the table works.

Oh, and, the emoticon shortcuts should be platform-agnostic anyway.  So colon-hyphen-closedbracket should give you 🙂 regardless of what device you're using.

Seems very slow to apply the style sheet (correct fonts etc) during pretty much every page load, so you're left with the default stuff for a moment or two before it catches up. Not a massive problem, obviously, but it's the only site of this type where I'm aware of this kind of thing, and I guess you'd like to know about it as it looks a bit naff.

Chrome latest build etc.

I've tried to search, but why is the forum threads list page such a small font, then when you click into a thread, the topic content is notably larger ?    I know that you can increase/decrease the zoom simply ... but shouldn't need to do that going between each clicked link.    I just dont understand why?

Also I'm seeing the delay in the style sheet applying.   Its almost like its having to re-download the font every page.

Either an classic underline, or a brighter colour.

At the moment they are really easy to miss.

Chrome Moto/Latest versions the Burger Button toolbar on the side seems to be variable in it's precision, it's as if the sections for each of the buttons are overlapping. Keep getting reviews while pressing for forum

When roughly did that start happening?  Which browser(s)?

Any idea which android devices they are testing on at stw towers?

I'm getting very slow loading and plenty of "spinning wheels of death" whilst the forum loads. Then it stalls, then it partially loads then I get the "this website is using significant energy, closing it may help" message...

I assume it's all the "accept privacy" requests from users..

Site slowness right now is because we've turned off page caching temporarily. This was because it conflicted with the GDPR system. Tech are working on a new page caching system that will work with our GDPR plugin. That's the priority right now.

Mark, could you update the "Our Forum" thread with a list of bugs/problems that are being worked on or in the immediate pipeline please? At least then folk have an idea of whether to raise something or not.

The editor behaves in a weird way: bold and italic are fine but <span style="text-decoration: underline;">underline</span>? Looks OK when I add it but I've seen HTML in the resulting post.

@whitestone - this was in response to my question about the formatting codes "It’s not at the top of the list and won’t be for some time."

At least it's on the "list" I suppose.

@DezB - sort of figured that 🙂 The editor is a standard Wordpress plugin so a bit odd that it has this very obvious bug. The mass of div and span tags usually get generated when someone copies the username and status when quoting a post, if you just copy and paste the post then it doesn't happen. It might still happen if you copy and paste from elsewhere. Test copy from the BBC:

The 2026 tournament will be the biggest World Cup ever held - with 48 teams playing 80 matches over 34 days.

Yep, kind of concerning after the mess of code lines about the previous version really.

My other question is how much testing is being done on Android platforms there?

(apart from the obvious whats on the list)

Mark, could you update the “Our Forum” thread with a list of bugs/problems that are being worked on or in the immediate pipeline please? At least then folk have an idea of whether to raise something or not.

I would assume that the list of forum bugs currently being worked on right now is "none at all."

Mark's just said that their current priority is GDPR compliance and site performance, so that's what's taking up their time at the moment.  Which makes sense to me - given the choice between "avoiding a potentially business-ending fine from ICO" and "making underline work" it would be somewhat daft to prioritise the latter.

It's always worth raising new issues.  If it's something that's been present for a while then it's probably safe to assume that it's been mentioned elsewhere on this thread (or one of multiple others) previously.

As for the "list," there is a list yes.  I drew one up a little while back based on feedback here and on my own observations.  No doubt others have too.  What the priority will be within this list when Tech have time to look at bugfixes and feature requests, I couldn't say.

@Cougar - agreed*, it's how I'd prioritise things, but a simple "We are working on X but know about Y & Z" might at least head off the toys out of the pram style "why can't I do X that didn't work on the old forum?" questions. I suppose having the bugs re-raised gives an indication of what problems are most prevalent in actual usage and helps prioritise them when the tech guys (gals?) get round to them.

The turning off the cache is a case in point: why let everyone moan about it? A simple sticky thread "Forum will run slowly" or similar as the title along with the explanation given above would have been far better.

* I wasn't meaning just forum UI bugs BTW even though it looked like it. Got to build the walls before you can paint them 🙂

Nice that my dead simple question has been answered in a round about way. Cheers.

[i]If it’s something that’s been present for a while then it’s probably safe to assume that it’s been mentioned elsewhere on this thread (or one of multiple others) previously.[/i]

That's as maybe, but that doesn't mean there's actually been a "Yes, we're aware of that and will fix it in time" response. Because usually there hasn't.

What is the actual objection to having a "known bugs" list at the top of this thread? Other than "it's too ****ing embarrassing", obvs.

Can I add the one about the Bold button causing text to be repeated - or is that one on the secret list already?

There's a "clear formatting" button which may help?

My other question is how much testing is being done on Android platforms there?

Dunno, but I'd imagine that Android testing is going to be a challenge simply because of the sheer number of different hardware and software permutations out there.

but that doesn’t mean there’s actually been a “Yes, we’re aware of that and will fix it in time” response. Because usually there hasn’t.

It gets rid of some but not all

Dunno, but I’d imagine that Android testing is going to be a challenge simply because

Many other people manage fairly well...given the bugs getting through on a raw android/chrome setup it seems like very very litle

They’re aware of it and will fix it in time.

Ah making a list is on the list and updating people is on the list that will be on the list 😉

That’s news to me.  What platform?

Chrome/Android/stock keyboard on a Samsung

1/ Type text

2/ Hit Bold button

3/ Type word to be in bold

4/ Hit Bold button (to make normal )

Word typed in step 3 is repeated.

5/ Delete repeated word

6/ Complete post

7/ Wonder how installing a standard plug-in could go so wrong.

Apologies if it seemed a little snarky but I've spent too long with IOS devs who are amazed stuff needs testing outside of that sandpit.

Anyway as it's not getting fixed for a while it really just needs popping on the list as Bold Problem with android...

I'd like an hour with Eliza Dushku and a catering tub of ghee.

My point is that neither the moderators nor STW staff owe anyone any answers or explanations.  Little digs about avoiding questions aren't helpful.  We don't have to reply at all.  We do so as a courtesy and because we're trying to help (which is why we're volunteer moderators in the first place).

Would I rather we got more official updates?  Of course.  But I understand why we don't - Mark said once a while back that he'd rather be able to sleep at night - and I have to respect that decision.

Then it dawned on me that we’ve always had investors. Our subscribers are the very definition of investors. They put money up front to support something they believe in and they get a return on that investment each time they login or when a new issue of the mag arrives through the post.

It's one or the other.

But it shouldn't be you (Cougar) doing it, it's the Devs/tech/Mark's responsibility. Just a list like:

Up next:

We know about:

We are back to the "what the hell's going on?" scenario when the forum changes began to be rolled out. At least we've not had the "It's all going very well" platitudes again.

... which is precisely my point.  It's not their "responsibility" at all.  Not one iota.  It's their responsibility to keep a business running, not to divulge behind-the-scenes information just because you want them to.  At the risk of being blunt, it's really none of our business.

In any case, I'm struggling to think of a commercial site which is as open with its userbase as STW is.  This thread wouldn't even exist on many sites.

As I noted about the comment about the site/forum running slowly, it's taken days before anything was said and even then it wasn't in a thread that you'd likely read if you thought the forum was slow. In the meantime the customers (I am one BTW, my subscription was originally with grit.cx and hasn't been migrated) start to moan. A simply sticky at or before the time the caching was turned off was all that was needed. It didn't and doesn't need a full expose just "This is going to happen, we're working on it as our top priority as it affects site speed".

If you care to look back at my posts about bugs/the updates then you'll find that I've been pretty supportive of things in general. Yes, I've reported bugs but I've not been a moaner.

Err, hi, can you remove the "Singletrack issue 119" advert? Or at least make it black and white? It's removing the option of stealth browsing at work.

Edit, just read your post and apologies Mark. In the grand scheme of things, in contexts of peoples (your) health then this is wholey unimportant.

Genuinely sorry to hear this thread is causing stress, but you must see that the only single reason it gets bumped is because of the lack of information... anyway, I for one will never post in or even open this thread again. Wish I wasn’t so ****ing bored at work, then these things wouldn’t have niggled me. I’ll stop being (as much of) a dick.

Nice one DezB not that I'm suggesting you're a dick of course.

We're 111 pages in, but how this was all going to play seemed obvious in the first 10-20. Not sure why people are expecting anything to magically change?*

Drac alluded to it on the previous page, but not sure what the actual difference to 'how things are going' would be if this thread was taken round the back of the barn and shot.

*Apart from wanting a place they've called online home for 5-10+ years to be semi-functional of course.
