What do I put in to search for STW Forum Update Drac, not being an arse but it's not that simple - Do I have to know what I'm searching for exists?

It would take a very small amount of time for those posting long updates on the Facebook threads giving explanation to add them in here. After all it is kind of what people have been asking for....

Paste has been flaky for me (chrome on android) since the update.

I can't comment on the mobile site as I've never used it, but on the desktop site the reply window is much smaller than it looks and you need to right click at the very top to paste. It's just another quirk you get used to.

STW IT is a very small team that look after more than getting emojis to work.

Well, it would be nice if they looked after more than getting emojis to work. Right now surfing facebook seems to be an apparently sound use of their time, but heaven forbid they post the update they've just written on their own ****ing forum. Y'know, where the people who use the forum might see it :rolls:

So it is. How bizarre. Same on the mobile site. I can paste within the text or first line but nowhere else. Nice spot.

Will who posted that doesn’t work in the IT section

Without getting into massive argument and continuing the debate about "updates" because, hey we've all had enough argument on here about them..

But..

If Will doesn't work in IT at STW, then should Will really be making statements on behalf of STW about the Forum issues and upgrade issues on a Facebook Group that is not affiliated nor managed by STW?

Yes, everyone is entitled to opinion and conjecture.. and Yes, to some extent "his" opinion could just be construed as "comment only and not on behalf of STW" but that didn't come across in the message, nor was it channeled to reflect such. He signed it off as ST Will..

My comment simply backed up the opinion on here that you really need to be FB STW Group to gain any Comms from/on behalf of STW.

And before we go down the route of berating me for posting my comment on it.. I posted it to make users aware that an update/comment was made on behalf of STW on the FB page should they wish to hop over there and read it.

Wonder if that's because the people in the FB group generally seem to be quite nice and level headed types rather than the sort of pedantic professionally outraged and displeased types who populate this place?

the fact people are critical of a paid for service that is at best very dubious, makes us/some "outraged and displeased" ? Really ?

Think about the Wiggle/CRC or the "Dont go here/there.." or BPW charges....  There's nothing bad about people picking up on them faults ?  But if someone picks up on STW not doing a very good job then suddenly it's out of order ?

a Facebook Group that is not affiliated nor managed by STW?

Isn't it?

When I go on there it says at the top of the page " Group by Singletrack Mountain Bike Magazine" and the group info page has rules which are signed off by  The Singletrack Editorial Team.

Play nice folks.

the fact people are critical of a paid for service

Eh?

Since when has this been a paid for service? I subscribe to the magazine, not the forum. I've just been to the subscriptions page and can't see anything about a paid for forum service. The ability to not see ads in the forums is merely a side benefit of a subscription to the magazine.

Oh, and it's £1.50 a month for a digital subscription. A whole ONE POUND FIFTY! Is all this whining about £1.50 a month? Really, you lot should get out more.

Yep dazh - it's advertised that you can pay to remove ads and get the mag for free too - spins both ways.

Some of the must get out more complaints include being served porn ads/popups, unavailability of the mag archive - the thing you are paying for etc.

Not sure if it was reported, but do older threads have the first post halfway down the page for anyone else?

Depends how you see the world. I see it as a paid forum with a free mag I don't read. You see it in reverse. We're both right of course.

The only reason I have a P is to stop forum adverts. If they took that function away, I'd dump the P.

Will who posted that doesn’t work in the IT section Zokes.

I don't work in the IT section either, but I still seem to be (just about) able to post onto the forum.

So amongst the long list of things such as reliable quoting, log-outs, usability on mobile devices, etc etc etc, you would have thought that the biggest bugbear of all - <span style="text-decoration: underline;">the apparent disdain STW and its associates have for its user base</span> - could be easily addressed by communication that it does appear after all at least one STW representative has time to undertake. All Will had to do was paste it in here. I guess the next forum update will be via Instagram? Or Snapchat?

EDIT: Oh, and underline. That needs to go on the list, again.

Not quite sure what you’re expecting, Zokes.

Just come round to the mindset that nobody cares and valid points will always be met with patronising and obtuse responses. Either that or deafening silence.

Trust me. Life is better when you just accept how it is, rather than how one would like it to be.

🙏

I've been popping in on a reasonably regular basis since the upgrade process started earlier this year. More often than not, just lurking, rather than logging in. There were times when I immediately closed the tab and didn't bother as it was too painful, slow and too much effort to even read the overview page.

Ive had no problems or issues with pop-up's or redirects, before or since the upgrade and I view on a 4th gen iPad with iOS 10.3.3 and stock pop-up blocker enabled.

It certainly seems more stable and useable now, the pages no longer leaping all over the place and writing posts now seemingly easy.

Im still not convinced enough to try the quote function again, likewise for posting pics and/or vids. I'm sure it's become more straightforward, but always seems complicated and in my simplistic view of the world, needn't be a chore to do. It's a ****ing Internet forum that needs to encourage interaction, rather than discourage. But, what do I know?

Possibly, not a lot 😉

As it stands at this precise moment in time, it's working well for me. Clearly a lot of work and effort has gone into this process, apart from the communication, before and during, which has probably caused more user issues than there needed to have been. As a glass half full kinda guy, I'd like to think that hopefully, lessons have been learned. The realist within me suggests the jury is still out on that and the strategic reasoning behind the lack of communication was not borne from a pig-headed egotistical stance.

There will always be people who feel they could do better, who would have approached it in a different way, there are always people with more relevant experience, many of whom have ensured this thread alone is now on page 104 and I also acknowledge that an invitation to visit STW and discuss was proffered, although I'm sure the offers of some remote help could  have been utilised.

FFS get over yourself. I'm not being funny but if I were STW and their 'associates' I'd have cancelled your account a long time ago. In fact I was about to offer STW an extra £15 a year in return for banning you but I notice you're not even a bloody subscriber. As Drac says, if you're really that displeased, then the course of action open to you is fairly obvious.

Dazh: I was a mag subscriber quite a long time ago. Tried to renew and after three of four unanswered emails gave up and just bought it in the shop when I fancied it.

Since moving to oz, I did muse about an international subscription. But I’ve had enough disagreements with Mark to unfortunately make me think twice about again trying to give him my custom.

So sorry if my posts upset you.  However, as I’ve said a few times on this thread when I’ve been challenged, I’ve been coming here since 2003ish. For the most part it’s a great experience. But, there’s always for me at least been a rather unpleasant undertone whenever anyone dares challenge the dogma that all is holy at STW. It seems I’m far from the only one with this observation.

Thanks I understand now. It's rather generous of STW to continue allowing you to exercise your personal vendetta on their platform, but I guess instead of finding your posts annoying they probably gain some amusement from them. Interesting you've been around since 2003 as your posts would seem to suggest you were born around then. Really though, have you nothing better to do?

I'll assume you just missed the context of the question there Cougar...

Just had a look at stw tech... Let's not call them ads but who is doing click bait looking phone reviews? Is that content being pushed into the feed based on search history & cookies? FWIW I'm getting android comparison and reviews surrounding very few bike related posts.

Coming Soon;

Singletrack Threads - all the hottest fashion tips, including trousers from an "interesting" place near the STW offices.

Singletrack Eats - dietary tips, extravagant coffee, craft beer

Singletrack Autos - campers, and all the VAG you can eat.

There has to be a certain irony in STW doing articles on technology given the forum update issue/non-issue though.

Really.... FFS you two need to have a holiday somewhere.

I'm still keen to hear how facebook is now easily searchable to find updates from the STW staff like you were suggesting Drac, I'm much happier that the message seems to have finally got through that posting in the forum is the place to update users about whats going on.

What is still a little frustrating is the number of things that are making it through as bugs and not getting caught at the testing stage - like not knowing the cookie thing was going to be a major ball ache

Lets hope that now the big stuff is done (??) they can get some of those useful features back up and running.

Does that mean the test server accidentally went live again 😉

Right.

I'm going through my bug list to submit to STW.  I had a very long list, but a lot seems to have been quietly fixed without anyone noticing.  Eg, we now have a working (beta) search, the classifieds are no longer bumpable and so forth.  So I'm looking at major bugs / feature requests still outstanding.  This is what I've got:

Issues:

Some users unable to log in following the server migration without using the workarounds discussed earlier on this thread. This is being addressed on Monday.

Spurious markup in the Editor. Smileys and underline in editor. Full-screen smileys.

Post preview isn't an accurate representation of the post results.

Long-standing logout issues for some users (predating the site upgrade).

Old posts having the OP several posts down from the top.

New threads created from the combined index disappear if you don't specify a target forum.

Posting occasionally gives "ERROR: Are you sure you wanted to do that?" and fails to post. (It's rare and I've not really seen this being reported - is it just me that this happens to?)

Requests:

Member history improved.

Post freshness showing last user posted.

Better notification of unread PMs.

Show forum links at the bottom of threads.

RSS feeds.

My full list is longer than this and includes things I've noticed / want to suggest which people haven't really mentioned.  Note that at this point I'm not concerned with anything that's browser- or OS-specific, I'm looking at site-wide stuff.  I've also dropped a bunch of stuff that was reported weeks ago if I'm not sure what's still current.

Is there anything important site-wide that I've overlooked?

EDIT: It’d be really useful if folk specify desktop / mobile sites if an issue / feature is relevant to one but not the other.

Is this possibly attempted double-posting due to the lack of feedback/time delay when hitting the Submit button?

Either way, I'd add that to the list somewhere.

Oh - thought if another one...

The pop-up dialogue box when posting an image is too wide for my Android/Chrome mobile.

If you hit link on Android Chrome is there an easy way to cancel it? It has just been going mad for me if I catch it by accident, last time I tried the post Pic box spanned outside of the portrait dimension and you have to rotate to cancel it

Site wide UX - the next page forum is below the new thread box - guessing the navigate pages is used a lot more than create new post.

A guide for some of the less intuitive features - for example discovered by luck that you don't need to highlight the text block to quote it, pic posting is easy to post links in the text box so what does the new post image button do over that?

Assume Improve Member History is heading back to what was there before?

Is that a mobile issue?  The Submit button "clicks" when you press it on the full-fat site.

Is that a site-wide (mobile) issue?  Are iDevice users seeing the same thing?

Does 'favourites' work for anyone?

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by member history, but the one most significant difference between this forum now, and how it was a year ago, for me, is that I can't just go to a page listing the threads on which I've posted, and easily see what her there's been any activity there since I last looked. The current option to see a list of my own replies is completely useless by comparison.

That's not meant as a whinge at all, and I totally understand that loads of work has happened and lots of things may be improved both visibly and behind the scenes, but for me, this is the killer. I don't mind how it's presented, but some way of seeing threads in which you've indicated an interest, and seeing whether something new has happened there, is a massive boost to usability.
