Keeps logging me out on desktop Chrome (despite selecting 'remember me'). When you hit the 'log in' link, it doesn't go to the log in page, but just refreshes the index.

Eventually managed to log in using incognito page.

Maybe try clearing the browser cache. A good thing to do every now and again anyway

still logged in on desktop chrome. cookie still has same creation/expiry as my post the other day. calendar reminder set for me to double check that the staying logged in time is 2 weeks and 12 hours.

edit: and there was a browser update in the meantime too. so it survived that.

Mini-heatwave or not. There are now 6 threads more than 24 hours old on the front page of the forum. I simply cannot recall this place ever being so quiet in the 14 years I've been posting here.

This is not refuting the claim its merely passively aggressively playing the messenger

Everyone knows its quiet here of late [ the stats have been given ] so I am not sure why you  wish to deny it and o so in this way

Its not really your "job" to defend the site and it surely cannot be your job, or anyone elses,  to defend it from the truth.

No normal person comes to a forum to read an argument between a couple of wazzoks.

I don’t think that’s a safe assumption at all. Millions of people tune in to watch eastenders three times a week, which is literally just a bunch of wazzocks arguing, as far as I can tell...

Indeed.

Drac - you and Cougar have been at lengths to highlight that as mods you don't speak for STW. So don't insult our intelligence and your own by pretending that what we can all see isn't happening. That Comical Ali meme has appeared from the dead for a reason.

And rather than passive-aggressive trolling the forum you're supposed to mod, if you don't have anything constructive to add, please don't. Ta.

Oh give it a ****ing rest Zokes we’re entitled to post on here just like everyone else, I can choose to support the forum if I wish, I can highlight bold claims of the quetiest it’s been in 14 years if I wish. Maybe you should just leave the forum as your highlight seems to coming onto the this thread with you updates of how busy you think it is. Like Cougar says even mods will bite if keeping poking us, probably what a few of you are trying to do to be honest.

No. I said that I couldn't recall a moment in the last 14 years. That's quite a different statement to "I can recall every moment for the past 14 years and I know it has never been this quiet".

Look Drac. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we very much like STW. It has been a dynamic, vibrant community of many disparate opinions, experiences, and voices. I've met several people through here who've helped me out IRL, and I've also passed on that favour to others whom I could help who made contact via this place. I simply don't know of another site on the internet with such a community. Yes, there have been people I don't like on here, just as I'm sure I'm not everyone else's cup of tea, but the fact is it's a very unique place, and oddly one that's rather dear to me.

Unfortunately the botched upgrade, coupled in part by the apparent intransigence and surliness of ST's representatives has resulted in an awful lot of people posting an awful lot less. This has resulted in a forum that is slow, difficult to use, and lacking in a good proportion of posters who made this place what it was. This is what several of os foreshadowed a couple of months back.

I'm not posting this to thumb my nose at you and say I was right and you were wrong. I'm pleading that rather than the insulting claims of "it's all fine here", something actually gets done that involves fixing the site and rebuilding the relationship between certain members of ST (who appear to have gone into hiding) and what remains of its user base. Or before long, there won't be a user base. That would be sad for me, and probably many other users. I'm sure it would be a lot worse for those who we've been led to believe on multiple occasions rely on the ads from this forum's popularity in order to draw a salary.

well said zokes and I am not sure how mods attacking users  is helping heal the rift . Drac people are objecting to what you are saying* not that you are a mod.

Thanks Zokes constructive feedback like that is welcome and you’re right this place is great it’s had some real high and lows, I hope you hang in to see these problems through but I do hope you stop the less construtive posts you’ve been making if late which do come across as pointless whining.

Mods respoding to be people attacking them Junkyard I’m sorry but provoking is exactly what is happening Junkyard hence why at times we’ve retaliated.

You just highlighted that the forum has highs and lows. It’s at a low right now. I’m sorry if that truth fits uncomfortably for you, but swearing at me as you did before won’t change this.

Most of us provided positive feedback at the start of this fiasco. Much of it was ignored. Other aspects were adopted, some rather grudgingly.  We are now where we are.

The absence of more interesting threads to post on instead is at least in part why I suspect several of us continue to pass remarks on this one.

Pub analogy redux: yes, we’re probably the grumpy old codgers in the corner complaining about the new trendy decor, the fact that the beer has increased in price yet decreased in choice, and bemoaning the fate of the old jukebox in which we knew every disc (and knew how to get it to play for free). We’ll probably stay here as we’ve always come here and we liked the other regulars who don’t seem to come here any more. But we might also walk past that pub down the road we never liked the look of and find them all in there.

We are now running in the Google cloud. We still have some optimisations to do to speed things up and there may be a few brief outages through the day while we make adjustments. The DNS is still running via our old server but once we are happy with our cloud config we will change our DNS to point to our new home in the ether.

We've just redirected the DNS to point directly at our new server. That could take a day or so to propagate fully.

It has become apparent why updates to this forum are so slow, this is only the devs part-time work that they fit in whilst actually working for TSB.

Still got the mad overlaid adverts when scrolling upwards.

Submitting and editing is just....unbelievably bad. I can only assume that whoever develops this never actually submits any posts with pictures. Or doesn't care.

Fix those two things and I will be a lot more likely to renew my subscription.

You could always start one? It'll pick up again - new people, old people returning....... there's no decent alternative.

Drac people are objecting to what you are saying* not that you are a mod.

* It does happen that you and cougar get targeted/provoked but this is not what is happening here if anything you are provoking him and its not helping.

Funny though, isn't it?

The crap they've put up with would be classed as bullying on many other threads - I can certainly think of several posters who would have seen their arse if subjected to the same. *

And people are upset because they're subject to a little of the sarcasm they've dished out  over the last few months?

Ah well.

* Not you. 🙂

Good grief!!!!!!!!!

Does this useless website still just silently discard your post if you don't put in a topic?

Is it really so very hard to get this kind of elementary UI thing right? It's shambolic.

It kind of feels like STW actually would prefer us not to submit posts, and are making it as hard as possible to try and get us to go elsewhere.

Well, I think I'm slowly getting the message.

I just wish they'd sort out the quoting, *the only thing I wasn't happy about with the old forum.

And smileys. Smiley buttons would be good, or at least a list of smileys perhaps in an informative sticky about how to use this abortion.

I get far fewer mod warnings since making the effort to litter my posts with various smileys so this is of great importance to me. See the Pistonheads forum for a good selection. Whilst there take note of every other aspect of the forum as it is better than this one in almost every way, other than being populated by Brexiteers.

*It wasn't the only thing but they now pale into insignificance.

sbob, I really do get the impression that you're just looking for things to complain about now.  If you can't remember a couple of keystrokes for a smiley (colon-dash-bracket has been around since 1982 FFS) and are getting bent out of shape over a bloody paragraph break then you probably shouldn't be allowed out of the house unaccompanied.

🙄 😆

The editor (TinyMCE) wasn't written by the elves at STW but is a full grown product. Goodness knows why as it's pants.

Whitespace between paragraphs is ace - far better than having to type an extra carriage return.

So this paste magic that isn't working...

Is power paste turned on?

Just as it cleans up rogue formatting from sources like Word, it does the same for internet content. Need to grab a quote from a website for your blog post? PowerPaste removes classes, minimizing the chance of unwanted CSS overriding your stylesheets.

This post is in response to Cougar:

Not at all, as I posted above pictures (and videos) are now a piece of piss* and the other things I mentioned, for balance, are minor irritations.

Much like the dripping tap in my mother's kitchen that I have just fixed. No one was going to be harmed or injured by it but now that it doesn't drip, isn't it better? What is wrong with wanting better?

I assure you I am not getting unduly upset by the paragraph breaks, perhaps if I had used smileys the tongue-in-cheek nature of the post would have been more apparent.

It is not a case of not being able to remember the keystrokes for smileys, it is simply the case that never before in my life having used a plethora of forums over the years have I ever ****ing well had to. 🙄

😉

*Well, it's easy when you know how... 💡

The old forum you could preview to see if your smiley was what you expected, and click a button.

This one you have to memorize the list, and you only find out if you remembered correctly once you've submitted.

Let's see if I've remembered the happy smile face correctly.

🙁

Yup. That looks about right,

This post is in response to Cougar:

Let me explain where I'm coming from.

The devs have been at work since 4am today migrating the site to the new host.  Once the dust has settled, this should hopefully put an end to the intermittent glacial slowdowns that many users have - quite justifiably - complained vociferously about previously.  I check in here to see how people are finding it and whether anyone's commented, and the first thing I see is a complaint that when you press enter it leaves a bit of white space.

Then you complain that there isn't a list of smileys anywhere.  I give you a link to a list, do I get "oh, thanks, that's really useful"?  No, I get further moaning that the list in the wrong place.  And yes, it should be on the menu bar, I totally agree.  But it isn't yet and there's nothing we can do about that.  The devs almost certainly have higher priorities than coming in at 4am to add emoticons to the tool bar.

Ether way though, you can consider the point that you're not happy with things well and truly made.  Once you've driven in a nail you can stop hitting it with the hammer or you'll just split the wood.

Nice spot.  That looks ideal, but it appears to be a premium plug-in and it's priced per-user.  Assuming my maths is correct, it comes out in the region of about twelve grand a year.

Nice spot.

Yeah I opened the editor homepage and it was on the front page...

But with the smiley link stuff and known work around stuff just bang them in a locked sticky at the top of the forum and it will stop you having to post them everytime, add to it and delete stuff as we go and it's a live rolling help page that will save you loads of time and hassle

My suspicion is that the timezone or daylight savings time aren't set correctly so the cloud server sees an incorrect time passed back by the cookie. I was logged in then the two week session ended and I couldn't log back in until I deleted the cookies.

In sbob’s defence he didn’t say the emoticon list needing fixing now, nor that it was higher priority than the cloud migration. But it’s also not a new issue. There’s been y’know 4006 posts on those issues. The first I knew of the cloud migration was at 7 this morning when I got the maintanence mode page. Maybe comms would be good, with a list of priorities, instil some confidence? Mebbe...

Personally still get a very slow page load time. But hopefully it’ll stabilise...

My impression (Firefox on Windows mostly) is that the site is a little quicker generally, but only something like 10% - and still too slow to give a good 'experience' - so still a big problem.
