Just several cases (on many forums, this being one of them) where I post something to a thread, but then people (that presumably don’t understand the concept of forums?) reply to me by direct message.

Must be something special about you - can't remember ever having that on any forum I've used (and it's certainly never happened on here)

Can’t see any way to turn of the friend function though.

😆

I find it strange that someone has decided to use this particular editor as it's patently not fit for purpose. There are just too many use cases where it falls short: copy and paste; image/video insertion; editing on mobile; etc.

I suspect it probably works when implemented properly, but that it's a bit harder to implement properly than a new CompSci graduate realised.

I’d dearly love to see a count of how many people have used the “Friends” function or the Block function in the messaging system.

I’ll happily answer this..

I complained to STW about some proper right wing swivel eyed loons who messaged me after the Brexit vote, proper nappy wearing idiots of the first order.. and the messages continued via email once the “messages” in my little profile became unanswered by me.. So I asked for my email to be taken out of my profile.

Now then, new data rules coming into force means STW and other platforms have to abide by data privacy and your email is one, so too private messaging.. hence the new options to block or allow PM’s.

I closed all mine down to “no messages from anyone” for the reason above.

Anyone who wants to contact me will have to call me out on here, then get a Ban for doing so.

Its simple to do, glad STW owners put the option in because it’s one thing on my list when the laws come into force.. no need now, so thanks STW.

Whoa!

What's with the red border?

You should make it flash too because one guy away in the corner of our office hasn't noticed it yet.

Maybe throw a siren or something in too?

Edit: Gone now....must've been a glitch in the Matrix.

It's atrociously slow. Really need to sort that out. Having the biggest page sizes imaginable isn't going to help.

Seriously STW, I've tried to avoid slagging off the forum since the last time I did and Cougar got sand lodged in his mangina over it but this is ****ing ridiculous.

Have a word.

After spending many hours on this site over many years and subscribing to the mag I need a break.

It's a "it's not me it's you" moment

My subscription is up and I'm not renewing. This site has been so unpleasant these last 2 months and it's a chore using it. I don't use facebook and maybe that's where STW action is nowadays (?). To be honest the communication from STW Towers has been shockingly poor and I feel sorry for the Mods but this whole episode has been a text book exercise is doing something really badly.

I'm staying away from now. I'll look in in 6 months and if this place is still around and feels welcoming then I'll come back. But right now it's a complete bag of shite

More ads? Or is the logo just thanks for the backdrop?

If only somebody could come and explain what the plan is and what no ads for P means.

Yep - I have a stealth "specialized" ad.

I reckon the plan is to kill the forum off and be face book only.

Probably the only image they could find which kinda works with the centre 2/3rds of the screen covered. Unless you've got it zoomed to 125% like me in which case you just see some rock and a back wheel.

Looks clear that the owners are implementing an exit strategy - get as much advertising cash as quickly as possible, raping and pillaging the site, and if it goes under, so be it, they will pedal off into the sunset.

Yep and also it's loading behind on mobile which means your sending me an image for a full 2mm border.

In case it's complicated fix the broken shit first then try and get paid.

Second if you sell a product with no ads it means no ****ing ads. If indeed there is a plan at this point you need an outside pair of eyes on it as obvious stuff is getting missed.

Err, hi, P user here, I don't want ads and there appears to be a big Specialized one. That's bad, but what is worse is that is is positioned that makes it difficult to hide when I'm browsing at work. Be good if that was sorted. Thanks!

I'm sure it hugely helps the speed issues as well 🙄

Memo to Mark and the devs: you claimed back there that the forum wouldn't be fixed yet because you had major structural changes to make first - you know what, this (and other recent changes) doesn't look like major structural changes essential to making the site work. So I presume that means you think the forum is all fixed? It is all looking like the sort of stuff somebody who graduated with a compsci degree last summer thinks is more important than the boring job of fixing things though...

Actually, to be fair, it does seem to be faster than it was (even if still slower than it should be). Is anybody else finding that it's no longer completely cripplingly slow?

Nope. Last night I was leaving it on 'Waiting for Singletrackworld...' for a good 20-30 seconds and browsing something else on another tab while it sorted itself out.

It's OK this morning, maybe the fabled server migration has happened overnight.

EDIT: I take it back, 30 seconds to post that.

AdBlockers don't work on the embedded adverts, so you'll still see the red S and the Advert in the top righthand corner..

We use adblockers at work and these still come through.

Sorry STW guys but I've just cancelled by auto-renew (still got 10 months to go though with a P!). I've been a supporter since issue 1 and you were handing out fake tattoos at Polaris events - but now STW has just become a vehicle for pushing adverts .

It's loaded via CSS as the background image to the body tag. If you view the page source it's the first rule in the block after the Facebook Pixel code. It looks like the origin is from the same location as the images used in content on the site.

Doesn't do that in Chrome, until you get to a certain width...

Goes this narrow before adjusting itself:

It's there if you widen your window.

Can we have the plain background and no sodding border, please?  Adds nothing but distraction, people pay for a clean, clear uncluttered look.

And they pay you (STW) to be spared the sodding adverts.  And with the S there, it's a sodding advert, isn't it?

It's no surprise that people are pissed off.

Am I missing something or is the forum search basically now useless? Any time I try to look for something I get tens of thousands of hits, often dating back years and years. Is there no way any more of doing an advanced search and filtering the results?

It has always been useless!

So I can't/won't view STW on my phone because of speed and pop ups.

I can't/won't view STW at work because it is so obviously not work activity on my monitor.

This is the only site on the whole of the internet that I pay to use, I pay to not see adverts, yet I cannot avoid seeing this advert.

I have also cancelled my auto renew P (although I did this a couple of weeks ago in response to pop ups and logging out issue).

Agreed, don’t mind advert (s) as long as they are static, none moving, don’t bounce or play music, are informative and contain a phone number and not another embedded link underneath that’s just clickbait.

No, the old search wasn't brilliant but it did basically work. I generally found the results I was after. However with the new one I get zillions of pages of hits, with the oldest ones being first which is usually the opposite of what I want.

It's OK (ish) on mobile (Nexus 5X, Chrome) so I was wondering what all the fuss was about.  Now I'm on lunch (work PC, wide monitor, Chrome)...oh.

It's a bit shit.  Even with a 'P' .  Reduce the size of the window and it's bearable.

From the closed thread...
https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/p-user-seeing-adverts/

It’s a logo. Good grief.

...it's not just a logo - it's a bloody great image that makes it obvious your are browsing the 'tinternet. For a lot of us the idea of going ad-free is to get a clean look that doesn't stick out.

And it's an advert which we have paid to be removed! So what if it's just a logo. Is that hard to understand why people are a little cross!?

You have been told. We don't understand what adverts are because we are not important....

As has been said, it must mean all the other issues are not getting fixed if we are playing with this stuff now or Spec did a Spec day thing deal with STW and it was real important to launch it today.

One great thing pre-update was the accessibility of the forum, P or no P. It's horrible to read without a P now. I think this will put people off completely, rather than signing up to get rid of all but one advert. I.e they won't get to see the great and insightful content* the forum contains before being put off

*I say that slightly tongue in cheek
