Remember that Fast Show character who always brought home the wrong shopping..?

Hey web dev, have you fixed the copy and paste?

Er, no. Even better than that! I've made a pop up to remind all the visitors to the site to buy the mag!

Facepalm.

Do you think new people have been hired?

In my trade there are lots of small companies we buy from . They are run by passionate people who started the company and care about their product.

They get fairly successful and then the smarmy men in suits arrive. The earth is promised, the product has all the interesting features knocked off and then the holy grail is reached....Smarmy apprentice wannabe has got the company a little stand in a ****ing garden centre.

“Ooh look what I’ve done, your bland crap product is now seen by loads of boring people with nothing better to do.”

Yeah ,it’s sale or return and you won’t get paid for 6 months. Still, it’s in a garden centre.

Meanwhile all the independent shops that helped build the product and pays full whack finds out that it’s sold cheaper elsewhere and drops the product.

Being seen in a garden centre by lots of people is not a barometer of success.

TBH. I find the site ok now. The pop ups are a worry though  as no doubt they will increase as viewers fall.

Just creating a case study for work, using STW as an example of how perceived wants/needs for feature and platform improvements can end up monumentally messing up the UX and user happiness.

This thread is a goldmine of User feedback

Last time I did this I used STW as an example of how a constant evolution of small changes had led to highly usable platform with a vibrant community that had managed to balance the 'perceived wants' for features with an actual need to keep it simple.

It was actually the small things that made the previous version quite nice, small things like a 'roll over' that showed a user who the last posted was and when, this saved time effort and frustration by allowing users to make a decision whether our not to go further. A totally basic WYSIWYG box that kept formatting simple but then in turn kept the styling simple so the UX was extremely consistent (not many forums do this).

It's like it want to make a point for me!

3 edits to remove erroneous markup and the only way to solve it was to delete everything but the text.

The WYSIWYG editor is totally crap, it offers no improvement over the last one, it causes issues and there is ' probably' no reason why the previous one couldn't have been used. Apart from somebody somewhere thought this one was shiny'er and some new 'great' features such as Emoji's

and there is a post on the front page from 9 hours ago but we're busier than ever la, la, la.

Anyone who claims that the forum is busier than ever go needs to work for the POTUS. When something is patented not true it does make you look a bit silly to say it.

I mean I'm sure the people saying it's busier could dig out the posts made last week and the same week last year for a comparison. Unless all of STW are big Juve or Real fans last night was very quiet, and most lunchtimes and mornings... Part of that for me is being unable to find posts that have dropped off or see if anyone has replied to them, but I think I'm going to order a magazine, yes, it will look good with the other one.

FFS!

Stop with all the 'floating' banners and the flashing sh*te, over there >.

And VEE TIRE. Lean to spell!

I've tried a couple of times to reply to posts, but I can't be arsed anymore. Copy and paste should be simple, the top of the page '^' should be below the thread not buried in the corner.

It really is shocking for 2018.

And as for the magazine home page - I'm lost for words.

To be fair, if it worked properly everybody would be singing its praises, and I'm sure there are plenty of forums out there implementing it properly (it's not exactly rocket science to fix the issues - I could probably do it client side if I could be bothered, but then I have more important things to do like implementing pop ups 😈 - seriously that is exactly what I'm working on at the moment, though mine are supposed to be non irritating!)

Falling down the last wee bit of page over a second or two.

The number of posts full of HTML formatting tells a very different story, unless we are playing the semantic game and the act of Ctr C Ctr V is working as expected your missing the point.

No I’m not.

Still seems to the odd one that yes has html code in but it’s not every post like it was and still seems to be when people copy the username into the text.

I think this is all completely intentional. The just want random viewers, who come across STW to see their ads. Pissing off forum posters/subscribers is considered collateral damage and totally fine.

Also if you quote something from a newspaper/tv source, anything that has even unseen formatting etc. As the username thing is happening a lot is anybody actually looking at it?

example time

Every page I open has a wee animation of

SINGLETRACK ISSUE 117 OUT NOW

Falling down the last wee bit of page over a second or two.

It does now seem to be coping with stuff from this forum at least now.

Ah, yes of course it's all our own fault 😉

I know that's not what you mean, but "it only happens occasionally" or "it's because you pasted in this way" isn't a valid excuse, it shouldn't happen at all whatever the user did, and as I pointed out above it would actually be really simple to fix (do you think if I spent an hour or so checking exactly what's going wrong and providing a bolt on fix it would be implemented? - I think it would be possible just with client side js)

What is Fortnite: Battle Royale?
In short, it’s a mass online brawl where 100 players leap out of a plane on to a small island and then fight each other until only one is left. Hidden around the island are weapons and items, including crossbows, rifles and grenade launchers, and players must arm themselves while exploring the landscape and buildings. It’s also possible to collect resources that allow you to build structures where you can hide or defend yourself. As the match progresses, the playable area of land is continually reduced, so participants are forced closer and closer together. The last survivor is the winner.

Copying and pasted in Chrome.

Apologies for having to point this out again Drac but you and Cougar bit have a bit of an issue with the way/position you are posting. at times they read like you are representing those who do not speak - for those who know it's OK we just start to filter your posts out but others may think your providing an official STW response.

It does quite a few times sound like a flippant I'm all right what's your problem.

It should come as no surprise that it's running slow on Chrome, it's been pointed out repeatedly.

So Rusty if you were to copy a post and change a part of the text, say to shorten the quote, then it breaks the quoting?

Not tried editing quotes.

It's standard text as well. If<span style="font-size: 0.8rem;"> I edit the post, it throws up random HTML, which I have to edit to remove.</span>

Phone keyboard still borked as well, just on this site.

Very random.

Like that.

Appears to happen <span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">when line spacing is altered during editing.</span>

Although the code in this post appeared without any editing, before I added this sentence.

Third-party repair shops, which are popular in the era of glass phones and frequently smashed screens, often undercut Apple and offer services Apple does not.

Unless they are an authorised-by-Apple repair provider, however, they can only obtain “after-market” parts, not parts directly from the iPhone manufacturer.

Testing

The third time, it wouldn't let me Copy the P icon at all, but I then Pasted the result as Plain Text.

https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/linux-running-tcpdump-on-boot/#post-9938687

is a good example of tags being extraneously added - I edited the original post and C&P plain text from another editor. It's also a good example of another bit of broken forum - I ended up doing it that way when I found that it's not possible to type code in by hand properly on here e.g.
This is a test

it should all be one block of code

but it isn't
Yeah, kind of handy for techy stuff as it forces a fixed width font. TBH I'd normally C&P code from somewhere, eg as above:
body {
font-family: "Verdana" !important;
}
...so hadn't come across the issue of writing code directly on the forum before

Yeah, it was closing for me for the 24 hours but then it popped up this am again when it shouldn’t appear until about 8pm tonight. On Chrome it reappeared within about 12 hours and again after about 30 minutes.

Comes back more frequently for me, not blocking any cookies so I'd suggest broken along with unwelcome and pointless. And for those of us using multiple devices Phone, Tablet, Home Laptop, work PC that's a fair few more, also if you open a few tabs once it's unlocked itself it's popping up a lot. That and it doesn't even display properly and looks like some bad 1990's floating text on mobile.

I do however have a pile of 15 copies of this months mag next to me just in case anyone needs one #AdvertisingWorks

It came back on demand for me yesterday. Until I blocked it. Scroll all the way to the bottom, then it reappeared conveniently to make it easier to find in the page inspector tools.

The only cookies that would be blocked within one session would be criteo, skimresources and facebook, all of which are permanently blocked. I presume it's not one of them. st cookies are all whitelisted.

Certain frowned upon plugins make it go away on a computer, but it's still bloody annoying on the mobile. I strongly suspect my local newsagent won't have much in the way of stock of an esoteric British MTB mag, so I might have to take you up on your offer Mike.

I have also had some strange wording floating over the screen - moves to quickly to read it but I think it is related to the buy the mag ad.  black type, bigger than the forum font and italic.  Floats around the opposite way to scrolling.  On an android phone

If only there was a way that they could know who was a subscriber...

I have also had some strange wording floating over the screen – moves to quickly to read it but I think it is related to the buy the mag ad.  black type, bigger than the forum font and italic.  Floats around the opposite way to scrolling.  On an android phone

i also get this.  too fast for me to read tho, goes from top to bottom at the speed of sound........

Are you suggesting that they need to slow it down?

That "floating text" is what becomes the pop-up.

Fancy, eh?

That floating text shite might just be what reminds (forces) me to phone in and cancel my (at least print) subscription. I’ve been meaning to do it for 6 months now.

thanks, keep up the good work.
