Looks good!! No one ever likes a change to the fourm!!

One thing I’m sure that STW knows is that the “favourites” in your profile are now all gone? Is that so thing we may get back please??

Great how do you quote?

Seems to me that the issue is that it's copying formatting as well as text.  I appreciate this is a shit workaround, but if you C&P in and out of Notepad first, it strips the formatting and quoting works.

This has been a massive change behind the scenes, I'm sure it'll all get sorted soon.  Whilst appearing simple, the old forum was a beast under the hood.  Getting to where we are now whilst not ideal was a huge undertaking.  For all the teething issues, we're in a far better place than we were in terms of maintenance and potential for upgrades.

Have now read the thread.

Just spotted, there's a "clear formatting" button too.  Move the cursor into the pasted text and hit that, seems to work.

I think you have to select ALL the pasted text?

Now I confess I'm more likely to be found under a landrover with a hammer than compiling some software code... But I know that my very smart little brother who wrangles sql servers for Marks & Spencer has a copy of a live database that he can completely shag up with his mangled code for testing before being let loose on the real deal. Is that really not an option here? Everything is borked!

And now I'm going to edit so everyone can see me looking rad!

And the submit button doesn't work properly. And it takes me to post #1 mot last post etc etc. Properly borked

Not sure what everyone is complaining about. It's all fine and working 100%.

I think Mark and co can have a beer and a good night sleep content in a job well done. They had me going with that aborted effort before Christmas, but looks like I was worried unnecessarily.

Just looked on mobile for first time.

Can somebody explain why the avatars fill my entire screen on every post by an author that has one? BlackBerry mobile browser. It was bad before, what with no text scaling, but now it's unreadable.

Thats just to keep everyone honest.

*Actually that's not a bad thing, it will the political threads from descending into an edited post-fest and the context going out of the window.

** The preview button shows the post without all of the HTML code. I used the remove format button too.

And that edit changed my Tag

* And that edit I unchecked the "Keep a log of this edit" box and it didn't add another avatar and edit history.

Well, at least the green is darker and I can see what the text sez!
No buttons showing above the comments box for quote, image, video, etc on my iPad, or emoticons either, and I’m not keen on the fact that the text I see in the comments box is in badly spaced typewriter font.

I have a "release" of database related software next week (hopefully if we're on schedule). We plan to do pre-beta testing in a sandbox for a week or so before replacing the existing system. That's kind of standard practice for anything other than internet forum software apparently.

Mind you I'm not having any problem at all with quoting, because the only option I have is to manually add the BB code tags - none of the nice buttons as shown in simon's pic here, and the "reply" button does nothing for me. I have a "preview" button, but that also does nothing (I'm on Chrome on Windows BTW in case anybody useful is reading, and I turned off STW Extension Tools in case that was breaking it)

CZ

I've got the quote buttons, etc. But no emoticons on Mac or iPhone on Safari. Or iPad on Opera.  All running the latest iOS.

and the tag gets changed by the latest poster. I think we would have run out of room otherwise.

The giant avatars on the mobile version are... interesting... but what I don't get is why you'd have avatars for the edits but not for the main posts?  Surely the logical thing to do* would be to have an avatar by the poster's name on each post, but none on the edits.

Other than that, looks promising.  There were plenty of numpties who couldn't figure out how to quote properly or post images on the old forum, plus ça change and all that  🙂

*Wait, I think I see the problem there...

Hmm, it looking back at existing threads it seems they've rebroken nested quoting, but far more significantly the change in posts per page has completely messed up the really important things 🙁

it also seems to have broken google searches on multi page threads - hopefully that will get reindexed?

edit: posting links to specific posts on threads on here is also broke
edit: though it looks like you can fiddle it
edit: editing

Also when you edit a post the box for "Keep a log of this edit" should be clear, so that you have to tick it to get the record at the bottom of the post.

So is there a central bug list??

So far it looks like

quote being broken

Clicking on the freshness link takes you to random spots in the thread

Replies created looks like a random pile of posts (or is that the point?)

The nice simple Forum Activity page is gone

The hover over text on freshness doesn't tell you last poster anymore

On the plus side seeing if posts have been edited is nice to have but no need for the avatars really?

Classic!

Who did you get to rebuild it? Was it the same firm that created Ling's car website? I'm certainly hovering over the subscription button now - or at least I think I am (It's behind a huge pixelated avatar of David Koresh or something...)

A little update on the sales I posted, both posted with title only, I edited the description into the first one and all looked ok, however when signed out I couldn’t see the thread at all and is shaded a pale orange colour, had a second attempt and that did exactly the same

Ipad2 & Safari and I'm getting no options in the reply box for quote, image upload etc, just the preview button, a tags box & a tick box for notify me of updates by email. Also not seeing links to vids in posts, presumably YouTube links, but reading the threads others appear to be able to?

Edit, same thing on Android using Chrome.

And there's no way of returning to the thread they were posted on, or what they were replying to.

The engagements page has nothing to do with threads I've engaged on.

Going to mean less time on here if I can't return to threads and pick up conversations.

Probably a good thing.

Having worked for a company that once had a high traffic specialist forum and then screwed it up utterly with a series of pointlessly complex updates that ultimately rendered it useless, I'd urge you to leave stuff that works perfectly well, alone.

There's a weird techie thing of wanting to do clever things that in reality no-one wants or needs, because, well, they're clever. In that case the repeated bugs and inability to fix them combined with users' basic conservatism eventually pretty much killed that forum.

People just want the basics to work properly ime. Bells and whistles that don't work just alienate your users. Hopefully that doesn't happen here. All imho obviously etc.

I think people who run sites sometimes get bored with their own platform, when their users are still quite happy with its functionality. I'm not saying there's no case for change, ever, just that sometimes it sort of snowballs into updates that don't really add anything useful.

Is the forum search broken btw?

Mark has said that the changes are primarily to add/improve functionality at the business end of the site, rather than for users.

The general wierdness/glitchiness does remind me of being around when the BBC was rolling out new versions of its news website. In about 1997. (Would add smiley but..)

I can't view that thread either. Somehow it keeps getting bumped up the forum order though.

PS: My advice would be to shorten the ducting run, eliminate the low spot (prop it up) or increase the power of the extractor fan - one of the Manrose inline jobbies perhaps. <smiley> </smiley>

Obviously it's ST's forum, but whatever the motivation behind the changes, at the moment they're impacting pretty significantly on the user experience and people don't always enjoy being unofficial beta testers.

Don't mind me though. I'm just fascinated by seeing a forum 'upgrade' from the other side of the screen as it were.

The forum search is broken right? Or have I just missed its new location.

Forum search is coming later, again according to Mark, so something to look forward to.

Don't see the "green" UI on desktop (either Mac or Kubuntu) but do see it on the iPad.

I did try to post a reply with two images but the post just disappeared, no idea what happened with that! The preview didn't like having two images though, it just displayed the BB code for the second one.

Well this is a ball-up.

[i]"Somethings are disabled BWD they hope to bring it back in stages like other features."[/i]*

Like when you buy a new car and they give it to you in bits as they make sure each part works? "Here's your engine sir, wheels will follow in a few weeks when we make sure they roll properly"

*Can't quote as I see none of the formatting options.

Just testing

Nope, still don't know how to make this work.

Can we go back to the old forum until this one has been tested. And when it does come back I think a server upgrade is going to be needed (along with an SSL certificate for the site).
