I know this is old news, and I know I'm probably just whinging again, but what exactly is going on with the site speed? I also know that the given reason is that the servers can't cope with the load and you're migrating, but given it was never anywhere near this bad before the "upgrade" and there has been pretty much a step change have you lost server capability or is there something fundamental wrong with the functionality? It's all just a bit ridiculous now - it's been a problem for ages - I'm sure I'm probably making things worse doing this, but it's got to the point where not only am I opening several new tabs for threads I might be interested in (then going off for a cup of tea whilst they load), I've now taken to opening multiple pages of long threads when I'm not sure which one I was last on, it's so painful having to load the previous page if I've missed something.

I note that another tab I opened before I started typing this several minutes ago is still loading.

that might be part of the problem.  I'm tending to do that as well - if there is a couple of threads I'm interested in I'll shift click them to open a new tab so they can download while I'm reading something else.  I suspect that means the servers are getting a couple of times their normal load

Actually just to report something I'm not sure has been reported - it seems I can no longer paste a URL and have it automatically turn into a link. Sure I can use the link button, and it's fairly trivial but that's a loss of functionality compared to what we had.

Also possibly means more ads served

I do appreciate that, and mentioned it in my post - but I doubt that many people are doing it (and I always used to do it to some extent anyway) so it's not the cause of the problem, not to any significant extent. The tab I commented on was the only other one I'd opened anyway, so not really any different to normal use.

Certainly not in my case, though in any event I'm not opening more threads, just more at once (hence the average server load should be the same even if everybody was doing it).

Weird - I did exactly the same copy and paste when replying to the sleeping bag for bikepacking thread (different URI obviously) and it appeared as a link. Didn't use the Link button.

Funny how no other forums I use have these strange formatting and editing problems. As I've already written, why is there a need to fanny about with the UI given that all of the functions folk expect already appear all over the internet and folk manage to use them without an instruction manual?

I can't see that this has anything to do with weird back-ends or complicated account linkages.

Still, it'll be the Easter holidays soon and we might see some progress as the developers will have some free time away from their homework.

I don't really understand phone and computer stuff. I'm using a pretty basic android phone but it works reasonably well. Trying to use this forum I find the page jumps about so I wait a couple of seconds for it to settle down but just as I go to select my thread the page jumps again and I get something random.

I presume it's something to do with the ads?

Is this how things are going to be from now on or is this one of the unresolved issues that will be sorted in time?

Is "Search" still in development?

It's a chocolate teapot. A quick check for "Yoti" returns north of 47000 results with the bulk of this (looking like they're) for "Yeti". No means of sorting, let alone filtering.

Who's the clever clogs who thought that it might be useful to introduce a 'smart' search then provide no way for the user to actually  make use of the results?

And this was apparently a priority feature.

I don't believe that there are real developers working on this project, blaggers and bullshitters or nepotism at work I'm guessing.

If only there was an easier way to search this forum without the developers having to spend lots of their time they could be spending fixing all the other things which got broken.

The search appears to be doing some string matching stuff. I was looking for threads on the new Transition Patrol earlier and got a load of threads on Transit vans. Close, but not what I was after really. Swift Key issues do seem to be better than before though.

Gosh, thanks aracer.

For those of us not intimately aware of the contents of this thread, wouldn't it be useful if somebody could take the time to link search to google search, and/or add a sticky explaining hacks and workrounds.

If only there was an easier way to search this forum without the developers having to spend lots of their time they could be spending fixing all the other things which got broken.

I'm really unsure what you're trying to say here. Do you mean that something I'm doing is tying up the developers time? Or did you just get confused about something?

After Marks slightly emotional rant on the train coming home from the Cycle show, I thought OK fair enough, resources  are tight, they are all working hard on it, maybe just sit and be patient.  AndAto be fair some things have improved.

But there are still so many issues and so little feedback.  The Our Forum thread which was supposed to be updated daily has now not had a reply for over a week and apart from the valiant efforts of Drac and Cougar the info from STW towers is nonnexistant.

Quoting is erratic, pasting links is tortuous, I still get randomly logged out mid session and others are having issues with re-directs. Search is pointless. And my Bluetooth keyboard does really weird things when typing on this site, and only on this site.

It's fine Mark saying he knew it was going to be rubbish for a while. This might be more convincing if he'd said it before the upgrade , not  afterwards.

I love this site - it probably accounts for over 50% of my Internet use. It's probably fair to say I owe my carreer to this forum,  a lot of my riding buddies and most of my best rides.

But god it's hard to stay loyal at the moment.

There is almost no chance he did know it was this bad, as no sane business man would release such a pile of garbage. They are going to be firefightling for months to get this fixed to any proper stater.

Grit.cx looks and works much better than this place, that's 1 year after it's website was upgraded, although it is a ghostland.

If you are using an Apple device.. they are hidden in the Smilie Face button on the keyboard..

I don’t think Android has yet entered the 21st century so can’t help with them on that platform..

I have to admit that the forum now looks nicer than it did 3 or 4 months ago, BUT when I look at ANY other forum i then realise just how badly this one runs.

I mean even a (not for profit) bloody lawn mower forum I visit (popular in the US) has more/better features and runs 5x faster.

Looking at the number of new topics being created compared to 12 months ago it seems that this place is heading in the wrong direction and I can see why.

If this is based on a wordpress back end then I'm really not sure it was a good idea - and I like WordPress!

Threads are taking less than a second for me. The odd fart where it reverts to silly-slow, but it's generally running lightening fast tonight.

Seems Aracer might have had something with his original 'ditching all the old content' suggestion? 🙂

Yep, that post counter on the top of the forum page suggests that Bike and Chat forums have little more than one post per thread but that is obviously wrong.

The post counters are complete bollocks. Chat overtook Bike some time ago.

6-8 sec page load times this morning. Are some folk really thinking that's fast or has it slowed down again?

bearnecessities - I also suggested binning the archive. I guess all that freely-created content is a more important part of the STW business model than many would believe.

What's the deal with embedding pictures from Flikr?  Tried to embed some on a F/S ad (now sold so not a stealth bump) and they wouldn't automatically display, you had to click the link to get to them.  Just been back to put on it had sold and the pictures are embedded fine but the links are still there!  Does this new forum self-mend/have a mind of it's own or something?

Bug report:

Extra cr lf are inserted when correcting txt in android among other oddities with autocomplete. If I go back to the beginning  or mid way through some txt to edit and select a suggested word during typing odd behaviour. Sometimes the word is inserted with a extra newline , other times the word is inserted in addition to what I started typing, other times it inserts the word at the beginning of a line. Inconsistent behaviour.

Did I suggest that?

It shouldn't really make a difference if the software works properly - in any case I'm fairly sure the post counts are just another bug rather than an indication that stuff has been lost from the DB.

A bit faster now, but it's still way slower than other sites and slower than it used to be - faster than it was is hardly difficult!

Redirects are back, like a bad virus.  Plus yesterday it was impossible to post using SwiftKey, but oddly seems okay again.

Mark said give it time  but the longer time goes on the seemingly worse it gets as a user experience. Redirects are the last straw.

I don't know why people get upset at the lack of emojis - you only need two, roll eyes & smiley.

Using more than two together is immature like stupid deliberate spelling mistakes - nearly as bad as using lol.

Because those with no P are already supporting the forum - and the magazine - by being both the market targetted by and paid for by the advertisers, and by freely providing content that is subsequently used to attract more readers.

Many of the no P's accept that they will see ads on the site but there really is no excuse for the shitty pop-ups.
