Thanks Aracer for your testing and for your comments earlier, it's appreciated.

A few people have said things along the lines of:

Maybe Mark (or someone) could give us an end-of-the-day progress report until everything is up an running. I would think that would go a long way to assuring us that the current state of affairs is genuinely temporary, and that we had every reason to be optimistic.

With my support hat here on for a moment, I'd agree that this would be a positive thing, but given the choice between regular progress updates and them getting on with actually fixing issues I'd rather they did the latter.  I've been in a position where I've been working on a company-wide issue and probably a third of that downtime was caused by me having to stop and field phone calls from people going "is it working yet?"

In the absence of an official update you're just going to have to trust us, work is ongoing.  I've seen a sneak preview of where the site is headed and I think you're all going to love it, this is short-term pain for long-term gain.

To paraphrase something Mark posted earlier: They've had a succession of web developers doing different things and the old site - actually, sites - were a complex nest of coding.  Even minor changes were high-risk endeavours.  Update plugins ("like button" for instance) simply weren't possible as they require the latest version of the codebase.  Whilst it's not ideal at the moment, this step had to happen in order to get STW into a much better place to facilitate future development.

I can appreciate that Drac which is why the question was about providing one response once a day which stops a lot of people asking.

I’ve seen a sneak preview of where the site is headed and I think you’re all going to love it, this is short-term pain for long-term gain.

An idea of what short and long term is looking like would be good.

Since this mornings outage/update screen thing coming up I've got 3 new things going wrong and no idea if anything else works now.

Is Mark actually coding now? No? Then he can take an hour or so away from "managing" to compose an update for the users

still no buttons on the "reply" box here though

<span style="color: #444444; font-size: 12px; background-color: #eeeeee;">(and have worked on IT releases for 19 years* and, honestly, cannot think of a live implementation that was this shonky, at least not one that wasn’t subsequently backed out pretty sharpish)</span>

I can. I was the other side of the screen. It ended quite badly. Im sure this'll be a lot better in time.

Just tried to edit a post btw. Got taken to a page not found page complete with the steaming coffee cup.

Maybe he will, maybe he won’t.

I heard what people are saying about it would be nice to know how things are going but ultimately does it really matter. Me I’d rather they worked on fixing it, carrier doing their other daily stuff and then went home at the end of day to relax.

Bug: If you click on the last post link for this thread you don't even end up on the correct page. I ended up at page 23 (of 25)

The devs yes, but I'm sure they're providing progress reporting to somebody (if Mark's on here providing an update that means they can get on with it without him bothering them 😉 ) Though I'm not sure the updates they could provide would mean that much to most people.

Whilst it’s not ideal at the moment, this step had to happen in order to get STW into a much better place to facilitate future development.

Just to clarify again, I'm not sure anybody is suggesting this didn't need to happen - the software devs on here are simply questioning the way it's been rolled out (I'd be surprised if you aren't yourself) and we've not had any reasonable explanation of why it hasn't been done the way we do our live releases.

I also get the coffee cup if I try to edit my post. What I was going to edit/add was that on clicking submit I ended up on page 23 again not at my submitted post.

As a paying customer it does actually matter.

As for it meaning anything a list of new features that have been deployed and some instructions on them.

OK, I think I see why I'm ending up on page 23 not 25. While the number of pages within the thread is 25, only 1 - 23 are shown on the forum listing so whatever code is running behind that page thinks that there are just 23 pages not the actual number of 25.

The two bits of code also get a different number of posts in the thread: the forum code has 920 (incorrect) while the the thread code has 985 (correct prior to this post)

On the plus side, the 'Page Not Found' page has inspired me to go and make a nice flat white instead of pretending to be working. Which I am. Pretending that is, not working.

I admire you Cougar, mostly for your performance in Dusk Till Dawn, but that's a fairly limp statement. It takes a few mins to provide an update, something Mark has shown he has the ability to do. Even if it is usually a petulant poke at Zokes.

Anyway, I subscribe to the it'll be done when it's done school. It's just a fairly odd route being taken. To the point I think the GPS unit is filled with jam.

I’d like to think when it’s finished yes we can provide you with some some instructions but until it has all it’s working features that I would say it can wait.

Yup I hear as a paying customer it’s not ideal but people can post, they can read topics, there is a clumsy way to find topics you replied to and this is all for a bigger project which in time they will inform you of.

As I say maybe you will get an update on progress but again I’m not sure it’s essential too regular when you do have access to the forum and an ability to use it.

If it was my business I wouldn't be at home relaxing knowing what a mess this thing is in.

And yes Drac I can post, but look at the state of things; not even close to working properly.

Which does suggest that they didn't expect any of the new stuff to work when it was deployed.

Chuck a poll on the front page to see if the users want some kind of progress updates.

The forum is pretty gash now, good thing is it serves as a reminder that I wasted too much time on here some days reading shite that people post. Getting used to not visiting as often and can't say I'm missing it too much. Give it another 2 or 3 days of gashness and I think I'll be free. I'm actually getting home earlier as I finish my days work quicker!

Is there? I know how to do it (I'm going to try and put it in the Chrome extension tonight), but it's incredibly clumsy without scripts to do it for you and I doubt most people know how. Is there a simpler way I'm missing (I'm genuinely interested before I implement the current ball-ache method)?

Under your profile is a tab that shows replies created. Not exactly tricky. No idea how it worked before because I usually just look down the list of threads.

Maybe refresh the browser if it doesn’t work?

Cache cleared, browser restarted still not working.

Tried on Chrome on Windows and Android.

(also if a fix may need a cache clear etc. better to tell people to do that - from the list of things I leaned the hard way doing updates and support)

Oh, that takes me to the thread.

Clicking on the "Posted X time ago" link on your replies page? That's never done anything useful for me (it just scrolls current post to top) and behaviour hasn't changed. I've tried in incognito window (which is standard dev trick to get rid of browser cache, cookies etc. - why what did you think incognito mode was for?)

Is/was this working properly for people? (I'll stop wasting time fixing it client side if so)

Or were you talking about the edit button - which is broken for me again, having briefly worked again.

I believe I've spotted what's going on here.  It's tied in with the page numbering issue.  I can edit posts on this thread from page 24 backwards, but not on pages 25 and 26 which aren't showing on the forum index.

So if I want to edit a post, I have to post two pages of filler within 5 minutes to make said post editable?

Don't be obtuse.  It's clearly not intended behaviour.

As a workaround for now, you can manually edit the URL to include the post number.  So on your post there,

http://singletrackmag.com/forum/reply/edit/
/code>

would become

http://singletrackmag.com/forum/reply/9807193/edit/

You can get the post number from the "Posted x ago" link under your post.

Well, I've just tried to reply in another thread with a quote and the result is quite frankly laughable. iOS 10.3.3 Safari on iPad.

Post number 6 (possibly) on the person seeking personal development thread.

The process is not intuitive and I'm not a tech, which means ICBA to **** about with whatever I need to do to make my contributions a little more readable, I have anough trouble with that, so don't need any help.

Although a tutorial on how to post a quote, add some text would be handy. Please don't start with hovering over buttons, I'm one of the chosen few with buttons, but seem unable to hover with an iPad.

Starting a new paragraph doesn't enable upper case btw. Same iOS etc as above.

@slackalice > If you're finding issues with it then the easiest workaround of course would be simply to ignore the quote button until it's fixed (like I've just done here).  You don't have to quote someone in order to reply.

I don't know what the back end is.  The forum software is BBpress.  I've discussed the choice of forum software with Mark and Andy previously and have been advised that they have very good reasons for sticking with BBpress.

Even if hypothetically they were to change software, all the migration processes I looked into involved "Step 1: upgrade BBpress to the latest version," so we'd still be here anyway.

The one thing I’d love to see fixed is the row of buttons across the top of the reply box that put the bits at each end of a piece of text to make it bold, or italic, or emphasise a quote, or whatever.
I’m currently creating them manually, which seems to work but, are a ballache to have to keep doing all the bloody time!
The emoji button would be nice to have back, I have a source of my own, but I have to leave the forum, find the appropriate emoji, select it, copy’n’paste it...

I'm as irritable as the best of them, but step back folks!

It's a bit of a cock-up as far as migration exercises go (the hardest of changes IME) and the site owner as PM could come up with a more honest message saying "thing's are clearly broken now so give us X weeks to fix, please report them and we'll prioritise", which would have totally changed the direction of this thread, but he's hasn't and it's his toy.

The drama though is just plaindisproportionate, and yes Zokes he did bite at you, I'd probably have done the same.

A drop in traffic is what will spur any additional resource/panic, not us lot 🙂

“Yup I hear as a paying customer it’s not ideal but people can post”

Sometimes. Sometimes their post vanishes, sometimes they get 10 if them.

“they can read topics”

Sometimes. Sometimes they get faraway error. Often half the thread is lost to duplicate posts and random html markup.

“there is a clumsy way to find topics you replied to”

Is there? Perhaps instructions on this could be provided as a sticky?

“and this is all for a bigger project which in time they will inform you of.”

Which no one is arguing with, just that releasing something this poor was a really bad way of going about it.

“and yes Zokes he did bite at you, I’d probably have done the same.”

And if you ran a business I was a prospective customer of, I wouldn’t be afterwards. It’s been noted by the way that I’m far from alone in my thoughts. Come to think of it, making a decision that led to this much foreseeable turmoil to a business and then not getting it fixed quickly is quite an accurate description of a shit boss.

The former was isolated and fixed days ago.  The latter is caused by impatiently clicking on "submit" ten times, it should be blocked but isn't currently.

Is there? Perhaps instructions on this could be provided as a sticky?

It's been mentioned several times on this thread.  Under "Forums" in your profile.

I'm not wading through n(+ or - an indeterminate number it seems) but please, please, please can we have the old forum history page back.

I've been dropping in and out lately (events) and it's really hard to find threads where you've posted but didn't start (your posts are visible, but no links to original thread).
