Great! So I can post from Chrome (Windows 10) but I can't then see my post. I can see my post in Edge but I can't log-in to post

No quote buttons or working preview either

Shall now open this in Edge to see if it has posted 🙂

Had to enter the page number on the rul to get to this page, clicking on the last updated just gets me to page 22.

Though it’s been useful for me professionally – I’m busy pushing back my release despite pressure as we’re not ready and I’m feeling more conscious of the customer perspective.

The customer perspective won't be favourable if this are too 'not ready' and you could be exposing your company to a lot of reputational risk with such a release.

It is often better to release more often with less changes as it is easier to manage the risk and not be caught out, as has happened here it seems.

Hmm. Post disappearing weirdness, or glitchy bump?

Edit: Oh there it is. I actually like the idea of temporal posts which don't appear until one has to reassert their existence by commenting on their lack of being.

Pub analogy.

Your favourite pub needs a rewire. Would you rather they closed it for a couple of weeks or let you come in whilst the work was being done? Ok, the jukebox might not work and you might have to sit in the dark,  but you can still have a pint and a chat with your mates.

<span style="color: #444444; font-size: 18px; font-style: italic; background-color: #eeeeee;">Why are people posting multiple times?</span>

Posting multiple times is happening because you click "submit" and nothing appears to happen, not even any hint of loading. Then about 45 seconds later the page redirects and post, but in the mean time people click submit maybe two or three times. Sometimes the forum software catches it and says "duplicate post", but sometimes it doesn't.

Except in this case I'm asking for beer and having to wait 5 minutes for whatever the person serving fancies letting me have. **** this pub, I'm off to 'spoons.

Excellent analogy. And both models could actually work well. But to manage the latter, you would honestly need the pub owner to manage things in such a way as to keep the disrupted atmosphere as positive and as appealing as possible. If he just became grumpy, then he would run the risk of losing his loyal clientele.

Also, if the repairs were 'in progress', but there was no evidence of improvement, and no sign that there was any actual work going on, it would quickly lead to discouragement.

Maybe Mark (or someone) could give us an end-of-the-day progress report until everything is up an running. I would think that would go a long way to assuring us that the current state of affairs is genuinely temporary, and that we had every reason to be optimistic.

But you might get electrocuted, and you probably won’t be able to hold a conversation due to all the noise.

Then there’s the obvious reason this analogy doesn’t work. IRL you only have that pub: it can either be open or done up. STW can have as many websites as they like to arse about with, and when it’s finished it can be potted onto the live platform

Your post is there legend...

Good chance a museum is used to doing this sort of thing. I would be tempted to see if they would be willing to take care of the shipping themselves. Obviously shipping is built into the price anyway, so if they take care of it all it could be left off and it’s all their problem.

This is a common way of doing things where I work, another option is you shipping to an agent of theirs within the UK.

When it comes to actually helping you do the shipping, I’m way out of my depth!

Replying to topics, reply not appearing, but then get a message saying its a duplicate post... But it doesn't show in the topic. Also very slow, timed out a couple of times trying to post a reply.

What is the rough timescale on getting this forum fixed?

Excellent analogy.

except that it isn't really, for software deployment - especially where there are two test environments available where most of these glitches should have been seen first.

it really would be better to back this release out if possible and make it available in the test environment.

Having us involved in the testing process in that environment is actually a positive in that everyone feels more involved - it's like delays on the railways and the rail companies giving updates over the tannoy versus not and letting the customers get ever more p1ssed off.

We know the work is going on.

The quicker it's finished, the quicker the landlord can get back to normal. Or sell the pub to Wetherspoons.

I see it like a puppy.

You had to have your old dog put down as it was too old, slow, couldn’t do what it wanted to do anymore and it was not learning any new tricks.

The new puppy comes along pisses on the carpet, doesn’t always do what you tell it to do, falls asleep after a bit energetic spurt but you know it’ll get better.

You can’t have the old dog back as it’s dead so you keep training the pup.

I just hope the forum doesn’t go for a child’s face.

Switch it off.

It's like when there's a potentially disturbing scene coming up on the TV news, they warn you about it, and you have to watch.

My idea of simply ditching what went before and starting from scratch seems more appealing/likely the longer this car crash goes on. I think that expecting the current development team to shoehorn in all the undocumented and obviously ad hoc changes that have been applied over the years is simply too ambitious.

In reply to the analogies which have been done - I'd rather they rewired a completely new pub in the car park, got the landlord, staff and a few friendly locals to pop over and test it all out to make sure you could still get a pint and the flash new jukebox worked (but knowing they can just go back to the original pub whenever they want, because it's actually quite comfortable despite needing a rewire). Then in the middle of the night demolish the old pub and pop the new fully functioning one in its place.

The old dog might not be able to learn any new tricks, but it could still do all the tricks it already knew and it was still faster than the new one which keeps running around in circles because it's not been trained. Yet the owner decided to put the old dog down the same day the new puppy was born - rather than wait until it had had some training - because in several months time the new one will be better. I miss Shep.

[quote=SaxonRider ]Drac, if I lived near you, I’d buy you a beer for all the shit you’re having to deal with.

I'd also happily buy Drac and Cougar a beer for the shit they have to put up with - but not from this thread, there have been some proper mod slating ones. In case there's any doubt, any shit I'm throwing isn't aimed at them <duck> and I'm not sure anybody is aiming at them, or even why there's anything they have to deal with on this thread - they're mods, not devs.

The really strange thing with the page glitch after posting is that the correct URL exists - it's under the "Posted X time ago" text bottom left. So all the devs need to do is use the code which is generating that to supply the URL after posting.

I have to defend them a bit here - as Drac says it's not completely broken, and whilst the changes which have happened today clearly shouldn't be being implemented on a live system (if you have two test systems you don't do that until they work...) it was only very briefly completely crippled. It's not going to suddenly get better - they have to fix one bit at a time, which might seem like it getting worse, but it's a step along the way to it working properly. I suspect people are working pretty hard and it's not necessarily the fault of the devs that they were told to implement a system which wasn't ready.

At least I hope I'm not being too optimistic there (and see I'm not always negative, the new puppy is here, we have to live with it, it's not the puppy's trainers who put down Shep).

It was unstuck and there was tears if we now mod it heavily there’ll be an outrage, all bugs are reposted to IT bods as people spot them, which is now seems to be less and less.

Mark et al will update when they choose to but they are busy trying to get this sorted and doing some long days.

The one thing this roll does remind me of is some years ago our payment systems provider insisted we install some silly* update or not be able to process electronic payments.

Turns out doing so caused vastly more hassle than getting everyone to pay by cheque would have even in our stone-age-non-integrated systems as the required update also required a database "upgrade" which it carried automatically as soon as we connected to it and rendered all our customer reccords inaccessible from every workstation without upgrading all of those to an OS which won't run half or legacy systems and so on.

It's still a ball ache now.

*something to do with data security at their end IIRC but they didn't let us know in advance, just "oh you need to install this update to connect as of this morning" which left us very much with a rock or hard place choice.

Understand that one but iutsutteleavlea you guys to try and mop up. You don't get paid to do that. Having done some end user stuff for paying customers communication goes a massively long way. It doesn't actually take that long to add to a dev locked sticky once a day, you just make it a must do task as part of your progress meeting.

Bad comms leads to bad feelings.
