It's happening on both my iphone and ipad, but luckily not my work computer! How do I solve it? I've tried deleting my cache etc.

Older versions of iOS?

Fine in iPhone and iPad here.

I get the fun of .DMS files being downloaded in an old version of Safari on OSX. Something is a miss with the forum, but perhaps not showing if only tested in uptodate browsers. Or perhaps caching means only some of us are seeing this oddity in some browsers… for now.

Yes, i'm on 10.3.3 I don't want to update as it'll make the phone slow. It's worked for a long time on 10.3.3.

Just the forum doing it, and no other part of the site? That's what I get here.

what phone? It almost certainly won’t unless there’s another issue.

Presumably you can get a current version of Chrome in the store even on an older iOS?

Why would you want to do that?

Because aside from Safari not working properly hence the existence of this thread, an out-of-date browser is a major security issue.

It won't slow down a 6S I'd update it as you're at risk of vulnerabilities.

Dunno, I'm just guessing, I don't own any iDevices. But,

a) Anecdotally, Safari does seem to be generally problematic with STW and

b) The first troubleshooting step with any web page not rendering correctly is to try another browser. I have four on the go on my laptop for the various websites I have to visit as part of my job.

At any rate, I'm assuming that Safari either updates with the OS rather than as a separate app or is version-limited by the OS (is this the case?) in which case it's going to be out of date as the OP can't / won't upgrade. Using out-of-date browsers is generally a bad idea from both a compatibility and a security point of view. Obviously, if you can install the latest-and-greatest version of Safari on a two year old version of iOS then this point is moot.

Hey guys,

The problem lies with compression from the server (gzip) and level of support can be found here: https://caniuse.com/#search=gzip

I have made a few tweaks in the past couple minutes so would much appreciate to know if this is still happening.

Thanks.

It happened a few times this morning on my Huawei/Android using the DuckDuckGo browser, quite small download.bin files, which I deleted straight away. Then it was fine. Just tried again, and it's a larger download.bin - contents are HTML for forum overviwe page.

So assuming Safari version = iOS version, which looks to be the case from the dates, it would be supported from iOS 11 onwards.

Updated iOS last night and got the file download thing a couple of times this morning, seems to be working okay now though.

Although the login is still behaving weird.

Mmm - maybe nothing to do with using an older version of Safari.

Happened to me using an older bookmark (Firefox). Typed the address using https:// rather than http:// and all is fine. Bookmark updated to https

I have no idea what you lot are on about up ^ there, but my PC - W10/firefox both up-to-date has just redirected itself from the forum overview to some facebooky-looking URL that either firefox or somebody else saw fit not to load and instead put a red warning note on screen to say "don't trust dat shit"

Anyone else get that ever ??

Strange as it shouldn't and not regular as it's the first I've seen it reported for months.

Well all yesterday & today on my Android Huawei using DuckDuckGo browser one minute I could read the forum, another minute I couldn't. Not bookmarks as most of the time it happened clicking a link on the site. No such issue on Linux/Firefox desktop. Will try logging in on mobile at some point but recently started using a non cloud based password manager which I'm still getting to grips with 😉

No, all versions of Safari support GZIP; not that it matters anyway if the webserver is properly configured since it will send GZIP'd content or not based on the header supplied.

I had the reported issue last week on my iPad. It only happened on threads with multiple pages when I wasn't logged in and only for the last page of the thread. I.e. if there were four pages of posts I could visit pages one, two and three but any attempt to visit page four (clicking the "next" arrow; clicking the '4' in the box or clicking on the latest post link) displayed a file icon with a short name (can't remember what it was now) with gzip extension.

As soon as I logged in the problem disappeared and I could visit "page 4".

Did it with me last week and again this morning (on iMac using latest version of Firefox).

Only does it when I go direct to forum.

Still getting forum.dms downloads instead of the HTML loading on Safari (desktop 11.1.2) here. Fine on the iPhone. Only does it with this site, and only on the forum.

I thought that me using Chrome on Android was the problem and duckduck was the answer to all issues. Now it's iOS and 🦆 🦆 that's the issue. What needs to be found is a common factor.

Last week I had this exact issue on my iPad. Today the iPad works but my laptop is asking to open/save a 36.0kb file instead of opening the thread.

The common factor here is me......

Painful.

More changes made this morning in to feedback from people on this thread. Please tell me if the problem continues or has stopped. Note that the issue will only occur when logged out.

Thanks,
