So, here's a weird one. I am logged in but can't reply to a certain topic. It's this one: https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/car-came-through-my-garage-and-over-my-bike/

The only people that have replied are either red or blue people. Not like us common grey people.

Where there should be a box to type, I see this:

NB If I am logged out or the topic is locked, I get a different message. So it's not that.

Notably, this topic looks like one of the front page linked topics. Fresh Goods Friday, for example, doesn't have an icon to the left of its topic title, either:

Glitch? Or is this the thin end of a terrible, terrible wedge requiring annual subscriptions in order to post?

That topic is in the members forum, not the general chat forum.  Non members can read threads in the members forum but can't reply to them.

I couldn't reply to that topic either, no one knows why.

I believe those threads are all in the Members Only forum. That's why there's no icon. So no, you shouldn't be able to reply to them. Whether you should be able to read them or not I don't know.

So the glitch may be that you can even see them at all (but I think you're supposed to be able to?)

For what it's worth, in this instance there does seem to be a tangible reason for this; however, in the past, whilst still being able to access to forum I have been censored from posting in certain topics in which I have already posted for reasons unknown;

Perhaps on occasion the truth is too unsavoury for general consumption?

peasants cant take part, i personally feel very undervalued and offended, almost 'cancelled' you might say.... but at least you now understand your lowly status when it comes to posting on the general forum

Loads of links in those posts? There’s an unspecified limit as an anti spam measure.

Interesting theory, but from what I recall, that was not the case

Very thing and long wedge? It’s been a feature for around a year now.

Oh I see. That makes sense. It's the first one I've ever come across though - perhaps as Cougar says the glitch is that I can see it when I shouldn't be able to.

When I click the "Members (sic) Forum" link, I get this:

But just below that:

And I can read everything, but not reply. I guess that's why the members' forum's still in BETA. Maybe I shouldn't have pointed this out.

Ah well, I knows me place. Maybes the masters'll take pity on us.

That's probably because if you look in the members' forum, you get this:

OP - was it to point out that it's momentum and not inertia? 🙂

no one knows why

haha! I read the car-through-garage thread, saw the "you can't post" message and thought "that must be in the members' forum". Forgot all about it til this rather amusing discussion 😛
The internet, what a wild and mysterious place.

If the forum bigwigs say it's inertia, who are we to say otherwise?

No you haven’t.

I certainly have... my disgust at this situation was a big reason of why I haven't been active for a long while

I saw the thread earlier and after a moment, twigged why I couldn't post.

However, I thought member threads stayed in the members area where anyone could read but only members could comment.

What did confuse me, was why the OP would post that in the members area when asking for help and advice. Surely that limits the pool of responses.

You haven’t there isn’t a way for that to be implemented on the forum.

If you say so... it hasn't been a regular occurence and only happened (repeatedly) about 5 months back on one thread about Afghanistan, but regardless it'd worth doing a bug check to ensure it doesn't happen again

You certainly have not, if for no other reason than that functionality does not exist within the forum software. More's the pity, sometimes.

There are a couple of anti-spam techniques in place. As someone else said above, a post which is dripping with links will get bounced. I can't remember what the threshold is but it's not stupidly low. (Though it may have been too low, briefly and accidentally, when it was first implemented. I don't remember.) The solution here of course is, don't create posts that look like spam.

You have been issued temporary bans, repeatedly, for persisting in being disruptive after being asked to desist. If you're told by the moderators to knock it off and you ignore them and carry on then this is literally the only other course of action available to them.

You categorically have not been censored because STW does not do that, I have said several times on this forum over the years that the day they do is the day I leave. But even if they did, the granular control you describe is simply not possible and there's little reason why it'd be needed when you can just be given some time off in a couple of clicks. It's far less work.

What scenario do you envisage where you've been a sufficient pain in the arse that there's a need to prevent you from posting on an individual thread, yet still be granted full access to the rest of the forum? You'd just get a few days or weeks off, and if it's mostly dissuaded you from posting thread-derailing bollocks then the system demonstrably works as intended.

I can [post on the members forum but I simply fail to see the point of it.  why would I want to limit the folk that can see the drivel I post?

Of course I've been banned on several occasions for discussing uncomfortable truths and I don't hide that fact.

I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of it all, but I have no reason to make false claims; whatever the mechanisms involved, human or otherwise, there was an occasion where I was no longer able to post in a specific thread.

So the answer seems to be that generally you may not be able to post on a certain thread but you certainly can post on a general thread.
Or have I missed something?

Of course I’ve been banned on several occasions for discussing uncomfortable truths and I don’t hide that fact.

Again, no you haven't. That has never happened to you or anyone else in the decade I was a moderator.

I don’t pretend to know the ins and outs of it all

You could maybe then listen to them what do? I thought you were a truth-seeker?

but I have no reason to make false claims;

So you're talking bollocks for no reason? If anything that's worse.

whatever the mechanisms involved, human or otherwise, there was an occasion where I was no longer able to post in a specific thread.

Equating "potential forum glitch" with "censorship conspiracy" is about in keeping with your usual tenuous grasp on the reality of "truth," yes.

Look. If you want to discuss "uncomfortable truths" then I'll give you one right here. You may well occasionally be right just by sheer force of numbers. But literally no-one on this forum wants you barging into the middle of a discussion with a cut-and-pasted wall of unrelated text and the damning evidence of a photo of two people in the same room. If you have some -actual- evidence which is -actually- related to the -actual- discussion in hand then fire it up.

If you exercised a little quality control and cried wolf less, you might find yourself being taken more seriously.

Don't dismiss it out of hand, maybe give it a try for a bit? 😉

Have you considered that it’s not singletrack but the very people you are trying to ‘out’ that have the higher powers on these matters?

The thing about world wide conspiracies is they are not resticted to mere mountain bike forums. Surely their reach would be, well, much more far reaching.

Makes you think, eh?
